Jatayu is the mythical bird/divine creature that fights with Ravana when he kidnaps sita to lanka. Jatayu fights ravana fiercely but ultimately is overpowered and falls to his death. Jatayu however narrates the incident of Ravana Kidnapping Sita and passes away.

The portion of the dance was about this story and kavya here depicts Jatayu while she recites the story in her dance.

One of the postures you cannot miss in a Bharatnatyam dance recital is a scene where someone is looking into a mirror. Traditionally this happens to be a female character all of the time. I've never seen a male dress themselves up and do a make up check in front of the mirror. While my fingers press hard on the shutter, my brains go pricking around and remind me that gender based roles are embedded so deep in our culture. I cannot help but make that observation when i look at some forms of art.

On a more relevant note, im a total sucker for spot lights because i can unleash some havoc on the audience of the image with some shadow play. Of course, nailing this light is a big mess. You cannot switch to spot metering to do this better when shooting cause changing your meter takes time and it could make the difference between getting the shot and not getting it. Nevertheless, when you get it, nothing like it.

Taken behind the National Theatre, Yangon, 2003.

The government held a week-long classical dance and music festival (and competition) in November 2003, partly to promote their own cultural heritage against encroaching western decadence (pop music, trousers and short skirts). But because it wasn't western, not many people turned up. Mainly family, teachers and a lot of uninterested, loitering soldiers. The first three rows of the theatre, were cordoned off but I stepped over the rope to sit in the front row centre. As a tourist, you usually got away with such things in Myanmar. (The rather silly Elephant Festival in Kyaukse, near Mandalay, after all, provided velvet armchairs and free hot tea for the few foreign tourists who bother to turn up.) A bedraggled soldier in flip flops however came up to me and pointed his rusty rifle to gesture me to move back. So I did. No performance photos in here then. The front rows remained empty until three soldiers came in and sat down. They didn't stay long. After a few minutes they stood up and one started waving at the small audience. In total silence, they all immediately stood up as one and waved back. They continued waving at each other for about a minute. I've never seen waving out of fear before. I stood up (to avoid risking another rifle), but didn't wave. The man was prime minister, Khin Nyunt. I got some photos of the dancers behind the theatre after the performance (with the OK of their mothers - buses were being kept waiting - and with a neutral background). Khin Nyunt was deposed not too long afterwards. The generals remain.

Bharatanatyam is a classical form of dance in India that is used to depict various stories from the Hindu mythology.

She posed there, majestically. I sit here shutter hungry. The Red and the Yellow make the space in between the lens and the artist beautiful and fierce at the same time. I look at my right and cherish the light. I know every light on this stage and how much it affects the stage, where and what.

I'm bedazzled and suddenly i had to snap back to reality. My .03 seconds of opportunity is drifting away fast and she may move anytime now. My finger involuntarily pushes down hard on a flat piece of plastic that sends a sensation of accomplishment down the spine, i look at the LCD to review this and i feel the divine.

He welcomed them joyfully and made them comfortable. Meanwhile, at the palace, Rukmini got ready for her upcoming marriage. She went to the shrine to pray but was severely disappointed when she did not see Krishna there. Inside the shrine, she prayed to goddess Parvati that Krishna would arrive and wed her. As she stepped out, she saw Krishna and he soon swept her into his chariot with him. They both started to ride off when Shishupala noticed them. All of Jarasandha's forces quickly started chasing them. While Balarama occupied most of them and held them back Rukmi had almost caught up with Krishna and Rukmini.

We thought only the chinese folks in "Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon" did this kind of stuff. How unexpected this from you my dear mareecha!

Sitting in the front row with a camera and so naive an understanding of what was about to be thrown at me, you did some good flying there. Good on me to have brought the tripod. Good on me to have sat right next to the chief guest (uninvited) to have a good view and right camera angle for all of this.

Good to have been a part of this and to have frozen this in memory so that people wont accuse me of bullshitting when i tell them the tale.

Was it a good way to celebrate Vijayadasami? Yes, you bet! One more concert of Kavya and i was invited again. Bad news is my Sigma 24-70's Auto-Focus jammed and i think that lens is done for. Gotta get that repaired. But then, till that time i had a ball with this concert again. I can only try and convince everyone that this girl really flies. People are now suspecting if im doctoring images to look this way, sigh! Someone need to tell her to keep both her feet on the ground. I'm finding that extremely difficult a thing to get a picture of her with both foot on the ground like how normal gravitational forces make you and me work.

I have many such crouching tiger, hidden dragon images from this shoot. More to come in the forthcoming days, stay tuned.
