A different take on a classic sunset.

A classic sunset from my little house on lake...

I was at Clingmans Dome for sunset during a recent visit and I was looking for the classic sunset shot from atop the dome. The sky was covered in clouds and quite overcast, I didn't think that wide angle sunset shot over the mountains was going to materialize, so I just took out my Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 and began picking out small areas in the distance that I thought looked cool. I wanted to give a perspective of distance but just a small piece of that difference. I was hoping that I could show all the different shapes and colors produced by the mountains and clouds. The beauty of trying images like this, is that no two are ever the same.

A classic sunset from the popular Store Bay Beach in Tobago.

It only stays/lasts/lights-up like this for five to ten minutes, and the sky/cloud conditions have to be just right (at sea), so you just have to SHOOT QUICK...and ask questions later! LOL Wonderful to see.

Cannon Beach has long been a favorite for seascape photographers. Despite a common subject (Haystack Rock), there are countless variations on framing and foreground.

Given the overcast weather, I didn't get the classic sunset or sunrise shot, but the beautiful beach grass and sunlit sea spray created an inviting foreground.

The golden hour in a peaceful Bucharest suburb, stirred only by a hurried v3a type tram as it runs towards the busy, chaotic city center.

The old classic was captured on perhaps one of Bucharest's most scenic tram lines, where the rails and wires have almost surrendered in front of nature's growing force.

If it weren't for the enduring v3a's cutting the grass as they roll, one wouldn't be able to tell that there is a functioning tramway line around here...

Blog | Instagram | Facebook | For me, this image represents doing things differently. While the host of other photographers on that day's outing headed to a nearby bridge for a classic sunset shot, I camped out by this smaller cycle bridge at Daegu ARC complex to capture cyclists riding under the setting sun. Winning the 'Photo' category in Koreabridge's Best of 2014 Photofest convinces me to keep doing things my way.

This photograph was taken on a Busan Lightstalkers photo walk. I wouldn't be the photographer I am today were it not for their expert guidance and sense of community. If you live in the Busan, Gyeongnam, or Gyeongbuk area, I'd thoroughly recommended accompanying them on their next outing.

This brown lifeless grass left over from last summer frames the setting sun on the beach in Acme, MI. Taken after the Traverse Area Camera Club's Mike Moat's Macro Workshop at the Boardman Lake Nature Center.

One of things I'm discovering doing pano's with a drone, the final image is a jpeg which limits additional post-processing due to the compression aspect of the file format. If the sky is absent of clouds, banding issues tend to be more present as opposed to working with a raw uncompressed file.

This image took a bit of work but banding is still present nonetheless, even after converting the file to a tiff and working with that. For pano's, I think sticking to individual shots in raw format then stitching them together produces better results when conditions are less favourable.

-midtown glow-

i think its been a year since i shot anything in nyc. we visited weehawken, nj again recently for a classic sunset shot of midtown manhattan. the sunset seemed promising before we headed out but alas there were just too much clouds on the west and that killed all the color.

as it got darker, this very very strange big cloud started to hover over the city and it became one huge diffuser and reflector of the city's night lights to produce this beautiful glow that i've never seen here before. i don't know if it was luck or what but it was definitely one of the best nights i've ever seen here.

The fortified Berber village of Ksar Ouled Soltane offers perhaps the best set of ghorfas (rooms built to store grain) in southern Tunisia. This photo is of the older, 15th century courtyard. Taken at the onset of a sandstorm. Hence, no classic sunset colors.

This sunset was spectacular and the photographs don’t do it justice.

Past week-end was pretty quiet in the high country of Yosemite. We had Cathedral Lake all to ourselves. Hiked in late hoping for the classic sunset shot from this perch, but overcast skies to the west didn't cooperate, so this is the best I could get.

I scrambled the top of Cathedral Peak (elev. 10,912') a few years ago; the summit block is about the size of a refrigerator. I think John Muir gets first ascent credit. Sub-peak to the left is Eichorn Pinnacle, not summited until 1931. There were a couple climbers hanging on the class 5.4 route below the top, yelling to each other in the dark as we passed by. I dunno, maybe they're still there.

Cheers y'all

Steve

Masai Mara, Kenya

This is a classic sunset in Masai Mara. When sun is setting and a giraffe family are on their way to home. The little giraffe stops there and enjoys the beautiful sunset. The sisters and mother are waiting there and the father comes to the little giraffe and says: "Son, let's go home".

Rock Legends VII (Feb 2019) Cruise Video

www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pIMWuGq2WI&feature=youtu.be&...

I woke up from the parking lot at the Tunnel View vista point to witness this beautiful, yet eery, scene of Yosemite Valley. Wildfires in the area have coated the area in this somewhat thick haze. A little remnant of fog was on the valley. Of course, El Capitan and Half Dome are silhouetted in the backdrop but Bridalveil Fall at this time in summer is almost bone dry. I like this photo compared to what the other millions of people who photograph this place as a classic sunset spot. In fact, on my way to Glacier Point from the previous photos, there were hundreds of people waiting for a sunset photo. At this time, only one other. Sunrise is definitely an underrated photo and worthy to be admired. You can almost have this place to yourself.

Dadaocheng Wharf is another of Taipei's classic sunset locations. In order to get this exact composition I had to rise my arms and hold the camera up to more than 2 meters high, good thing that the humble Nikon D5000 has a vari-angle LCD monitor which can be pointed downwards. Still, for the blue hour shot I took half an hour later (which I will post in the future) I couldn't get the same high angle. Maybe next time I should get a super-extra tall tripod.
