By the Spanish steps in Rome and the church Trinità dei Monti. Finally here again - the trip was postponed both in 2020 and 2021. For obvious reasons.

I am actually here for work, so it was not just a matter of missing out on a wonderful place, but also quite a hindrance to the archaeological publications I am a part of. But even so, there is some moments left for just taking a walk through one of the loveliest cities in the world - and to bring my camera along!

(And hopefully there will be some time for me to pop in and say hi and post a new photo or so, now and then.)

The Pont Neuf is the oldest standing bridge across the river Seine in Paris, France. It stands by the western point of the Île de la Cité, the island in the middle of the river that was, between 250 and 225 BC, the birthplace of Paris, then known as Lutetia and, during the medieval period, the heart of the city.

The Luminara for San Ranieri in Pisa is a festivity which takes place every year on the evening of June 16, the eve of the patron saint's feast day. The tradition of lighting the city with candles dates back to 1688. Today the celebration has taken a specific form: the architectural details of the palaces, churches, towers and bridges along the Arno (windows, cornices, balconies) are recreated with white wooden frames (known as “biancherie”).

These frames are fitted onto the buildings and on these frames candles are attached and lit after sunset. Over 70,000 "lumini" (how candles are called in Italian when they are inside a container) burn and reflect on the river. Some candles also floaton the waters of the Arno. The city along the lungarno simply glows. Midnight brings the climax of the Luminara with the traditional fireworks show.

The Big Apple

This was taken on the second day of my NY trip. A visitor would normally expect to see lush green in Central Park, but given the time of the year it was snow white! I was thinking for a shot, and that's when the silhouette of this tree caught my attention. A morbid title, but that's kind of how it looked! This photograph is inspired by Her Days from Aftab

It’s been a minute? Since we didn’t get to see much sun lately let me bring some back in your lives. A beautiful morning sun glow and the thick fog covering Chicago’s Grant Park and reflecting of the luxury trio! What do you think?

Around 1900, Genk was a peaceful village of some 3,000 inhabitants. Genk was known at the time for its hilly landscapes which attracted many painters. Coal was discovered in Genk by André Dumont in 1901 and 3 coal sites developed: Zwartberg, Waterschei and Winterslag.

The Winterslag mine site is massive, and the underground concession and industrial buildings stretch for miles. The first piece of coal was extracted from the Campine basin in 1914, but mining did not really begin until 1917. The mine closed on March 31, 1988 after just over 70 years of operation.

The Winterslag coal complex has been a site protected by ministerial decision since 1993. The sorting-washing house, the tile factory, the workshops and the cooling towers have disappeared, but the site has retained the lamp store and the showers, the administrative premises, the room. machines with the power station and extraction machines, warehouses, stables and 2 headframes.

After the closure of the mine, the City explored the potential for reconversion of these immense mining lands on its territory. The idea of transforming the premises of the former Winterslag coal mine into a center of creativity was born in the 2000s. The City of Genk bought the LRM site (Limburg Reconversion Society) in 2001 and renamed it C -mine in 2005.

The Farmers Market in Oak Park, Illinois, brings an amazing abundance of colours and flavours to the city on Saturday mornings. Oh, and donuts. It also brings amazing donuts.

Hope the day will be warm for all to get out and enjoy a safe outing for some treats.

TGIF Right? Another addition to our beautiful skyline is done and it is really looking good! What do you think?
