This rock formation stands like a citadel at the top of Jacob's Ladder. In these wet and misty conditions it really does look like a fortress protecting the upper reaches of Ben Lomond.

The Historic Centre of Sighisoara (Sighisoara Citadel) is the old historic center of the town, built in the 12th century by Saxon settlers. It is an inhabited medieval citadel that, in 1999, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its 850-year-old testament to the history and culture of the Transylvanian Saxons.

Birthplace of Vlad III the Impaler.

The city marks the upper boundary of the Land of Sachsen. Like its bigger brothers, Sibiu and Brasov, Sighisoara exhibits Medieval German architectural and cultural heritage that was preserved even during the Communist period.

The School on the Hill (Romanian: Școala din deal; German: Bergschule) is an educational institution in Sighișoara, Romania. It is located next to the covered wooden Stairs, bears Schola Seminarium Republicae and is dated 1619. Its formal name is the Joseph Haltrich High School (Liceul Teoretic Joseph Haltrich).

The school was first mentioned in a document from 1522, which referred to a rector scholae with the academic degree of baccalaureus, to whom the City Council offered a coat worth four guilders for his merits and "to try his best with the youngsters".

Depicted here is one corner lookout post in the massive fortress known as the Citadel in southern France. The Citadel overlooks the estuary and river approaches to the important city of Bordeaux and was built to protect France from invasion by England or other adversaries. The fortress dates from the early 1600s.

The forbidding entrance to the Citadel, the centre piece of the massive 19th Century Western Heights fortifications at Dover, designed to defend the town in the event of an attack by the Napoleonic hordes. More recently it was used to keep people in, firstly young offenders, then up to 2015, asylum-seekers.

The Cittadella, or Gozo Citadel, is an ancient fortified city that has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, serving as the acropolis of the Punic-Roman city of Gaulos.

A stone Citadel was built on the Pigeon Island (Guvercin Ada) during the Byzantine Empire. The Island is now connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. The Citadel was used as a defensive outpost through the years.

Today the Citadel is host to the lighthouse, a restaurant, and a nightclub, and is a popular local hang-out.

Hey there!

Thanks everyone for the feedback and fun during this build!

It's my 2nd entry into this years Summer Joust, for the high fantasy category.

Enjoy!

The Royal Throne Fortress of Suceava, also known as Cetatea de Scaun a Sucevei or Suceava Citadel, is located in Suceava, Romania. Built in the late 14th century by Petru I of Moldavia, it served as the residence for Moldavian princes until the late 16th century. The fortress was a key defensive structure against Ottoman invasions. Heavily damaged over time, especially during World War II, it has undergone restoration and is now a museum and tourist attraction.

The trail to the Citadel is challenging if you're not adept at scrambling. This part here is the last barrier. It looks easy to walk right up to the structure but it is not. But Wilbur helped me and we both made it.

It is hard to imagine what life was like for the people who lived here. They must have had terrible enemies to live up here with little access to water and few places to grow food or hunt food nearby. I have read that the average ancient Puebloan lived to age 35. But somehow, hundreds of them survived in cliffside dwellings like this on the Cedar Mesa at an average elevation of 6,500 feet.
