It's time to play ball at Great American Ball Park where the Cincinnati Reds were hosting the Colorado Rockies on a Sunday afternoon. It was my first visit to this ball park, which features a view of the Ohio River.
The Cincinnati Reds played at Crosley Field until 1970. This marker is located where the right field of the ballpark used to be. Today, this is City Gospel Mission at the intersection of Findlay St. and Dalton Ave.
Alexander Johnson (b. December 7, 1942 – d. February 28, 2015 at age 72) was a professional baseball outfielder. Between 1964 and 1976, he played in Major League Baseball for the Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, California Angels, Cleveland Indians, Texas Rangers, New York Yankees, and Detroit Tigers. He was the National League Comeback Player of the Year in 1968 and an American League All-Star and batting champion in 1970. His brother, Ron, was an NFL running back, notably for the New York Giants.
He received a scholarship offer to attend Michigan State University to play football for the Michigan State Spartans, but opted to sign with the Philadelphia Phillies instead. Johnson worked his way up the ranks quickly in the Phillies' farm system, batting .322 with 40 home runs and 187 RBI across two seasons to earn a spot on the Phillies' bench for the start of the 1964 season.
In October 1965, the Phillies traded Johnson, Pat Corrales and Art Mahaffey to the St. Louis Cardinals for Bill White, Dick Groat and Bob Uecker. However in 1966, Johnson batted just .186 with two home runs and six RBIs through May 17 when he was sent down to the Tulsa Oilers of the Triple-A Pacific Coast League. That year, he was named the "Most Dangerous Hitter" in the PCL. Johnson returned to the Cardinals in 1967, batting .223 with one home run and twelve RBI mostly as a pinch hitter and back up for Roger Maris in right field. The Cardinals defeated the Boston Red Sox in the World Series that year, though Johnson did not appear in the post-season. Just before spring training 1968, he was traded to the Cincinnati Reds for Dick Simpson.

Crosley Field was the longtime home for the Cincinnati Reds.
Opening in 1912, Crosley Field replaced the Reds former home, the Palace of Fans. From 1912-1970, Crosley field would serve as home to the Cincinnati Reds. It would be home to 2 World Series Championship teams in 1919 and 1940. The stadium would be torn down for a new and bigger stadium called Riverfront Stadium.
