CSXT 5464 ES40DC leads Q018-15 east (Chicago - Bedford Park, IL to Syracuse, NY) at CP-382 in Chili, NY. Construction flags indicate where new cables will be buried, in preparation for the replacement of these venerable searchlight signals. While the competition, Pennsylvania Railroad, went with Pittsburgh-based Union Switch & Signal for their trademark position light signals, General Railway Supply of Rochester, NY equipped the NYC's main lines with these searchlight signals. The advent of Positive Train Control "signals" the demise of these warhorses, which will be replaced with more modern equipment. For railfans, this means that another bit of history disappears in favor of the mundane. For the railroad, it should mean a safer operation.

Yes, it's bacon flavoured vodka!!

No matter where I am, as long as I can be outdoors in the sun, looking off into the blue, cloudy sky, I am at peace, relaxed.

All the books, all the bags the books came in and scads and scads of bookmarks.

Alex & Will, our kinfolk, traveled up from their home in Kentucky to sample the wild game of western NY. They brought their Daisy Red Ryder .177 caliber carbines so that we could shoot some tin cans. I had a great time with them and wish they lived closer so we could see them more.

Stina paddles away on Black Creek. What looks like sparkles is actually the sun shining on cottonwood fluff that was floating in the water. It was one of those moments I think couldn't really be captured in a photo, but oh well. I tried.

She was smart enough to make me put the new camera on a paddle leash, so it was strapped to my life preserver. 'Cause you know I dropped it in the water more than once.... It is really waterproof!! But it sinks like a stone. Maybe they should sell them with floatation devices.

After carefully shooting for two hours on a tripod with a electronic cable release, I shot this hand held image on the way back to the house. It was the best shot of the day. I wish I would have spent longer with the subject.

The rays of sun here are actually due to sensor overload on the camera, I'm guessing.... But they look cool, so I'm not unhappy about the result!

This was on our kayak on Black Creek with the Adirondack Mountain Club (Genesee Valley Chapter). I took a bunch of pictures, but after the first 10 minutes or so, we were deep in the trees, so while it was cool and beautiful, there was little light and all the pictures are quite blurry. (Low light + me moving + subject moving = very blurry photos!) For my first outing of trying to photograph and paddle at the same time, I got a few good ones, but I think my dream of capturing flowers and wildlife from a kayak may be rather elusive.

Best viewed large so you can see the detail. I would have cropped it closer, but I really loved the reflections on the underside of the 2nd bridge opening and didn't want to crop it out! Ah vanity. :)

Early in the paddle, there was a bridge/tunnel to go through. As we emerged from the other side, there was a fishing line hanging down -- I looked back to see that the fishing line had a fisherman attached to the other end! Poor guy had no idea 10 kayakers were about to disturb his peaceful spot (and the fish!).
