The Château de Chenonceau is a French château spanning the River Cher, near the small village of Chenonceaux in the Indre-et-Loire département of the Loire Valley in France. It is one of the best-known châteaux of the Loire valley. We spent a very few enjoyable hours here but oh, so much walking around and it was a very warm day (plus a French public holiday so it was a tad busy but not as busy as it gets in the summer - it's the second most visited Château in France after Versailles apparently).
Chateau Chenonceau, Loire Valley. The photo was taken on a 2003 holiday with an early digital 'point and shoot' camera. Sorry if the quality is not the best, but revisiting some of the photos from this holiday brings back lots of happy memories. Smithie.

The Château de Chenonceau is my favourite Castle to shoot in the Loire Valley ---- Read my blog about the Most Photogenic Châteaux in the Loire Valley, www.aperturetours.com/blog/2019/the-most-photogenic-chtea...

One of the most impressive castles in the Loire Valley is Château de Chenonceau. It is built over the Cher river and that is also the most well-known image as many people know the castle. A photo like that will follow later, but first this picture from the beautiful castle garden.

The estate of Chenonceau is first mentioned in writing in the 11th century.[3] The current château was built in 1514–1522 on the foundations of an old mill and was later extended to span the river. The bridge over the river was built (1556–1559) to designs by the French Renaissance architect Philibert de l'Orme, and the gallery on the bridge, built from 1570 to 1576 to designs by Jean Bullant.[4]
This was my favorite chateau in all the Loire Valley.
Between my Le Mans museum visit on Friday and the Paris Airshow on Sunday, I had some time to spare on Saturday.
There was this castle that I had on my list for a while and it was only 1.5 hours away from Le Mans. That was my Saturday destination: Château de Chenonceau.
How was it? It was not super spectacular. Much smaller than I imagined. Weather was great and it wasn't crowded early morning. Entrance was €15, parking was free. It was fine.
Chenonceau Chateau, from the Catherine de Médicis garden, with the medieval keep (to the left)
A mix of Gothic and Renaissance styles, from the XVI century,.... Called also the "Chateau des Dames", because it has been thought and built and rebuilt mainly by women, big women: Diane de Poitiers, Cathérine de Médicis, Louise de Lorreine, Louise Dupin.... You can spot it from anywhere...The inside and the outside are fantastic... And the location , over the river Cher, and the great gardens.... Did you know it was classified as Monument Historique as far as 1840????
