Leicester MPD may be a shadow of its former self, but there's an impressive display of former BR motive power on show, with 56's, 37's and even an 86 present on our visit. 56301 sits next to the fueller, with, I think, 56006 behind.

On our way to Berlin we stopped at Checkpoint Alpha. During the days of the DDR this way the only point where you could cross the border by car when you wanted to go from West Germany to West Berlin. Here they would search every car to see if you weren't smuggeling. When they had suspicions about you they could take you inside for interrigation. Waiting time here could be hours,
From here it still was a 170 km drive to West Berlin. You had to go through East Germany over a single lane road without any exits. You where forbidden to stop and could not leave this road. Allthough not visable you knew that East German intelligence forces where watching you the entire time.
Checkpoint Charlie was the name given by the Western Allies to the best-known Berlin Wall crossing point between East Berlin and West Berlin during the Cold War (1947–1991).

Leaving former US Zone into Soviet Zone. A bit surreal with the Christmas tree there by the soldier standing where the old checkpoint was located.

When I was in Wales last month I spent most evening attempting to catch a sunset on the coast or beside another body of water. After the sun had gone down on this night, our penultimate one of the trip, we walked along the shoreline trying to find some nice rock formations in order to make the best out of the blue hour.
The guy in this canoe either liked to go out at dusk, or was late back from a trip – but we saw him paddling hard to get back to the dock.
Light really was faded at this stage so I bumped up the ISO to 1250 and fired away as he went past us.
Speaking of Wales, I’m heading back there this weekend for a few days. I didn’t get to visit Nash Point on my previous visit, and really liked the Brecon Beacons area so am hoping to do both of those, plus maybe one or two other places if the weather is kind.

Due to increase hostilities at the country border and within the nation, the military have established several checkpoints in the far entrances and exists of Bricksbourg.

Checkpoint Charlie (or "Checkpoint C") was the name given by the Western Allies to the best-known Berlin Wall crossing point between East Berlin and West Berlin during the Cold War (1947–1991).
East German leader Walter Ulbricht agitated and maneuvered to get the Soviet Union's permission to construct the Berlin Wall in 1961 to stop Eastern Bloc emigration and defection westward through the Soviet border system, preventing escape across the city sector border from communist East Berlin into West Berlin. Checkpoint Charlie became a symbol of the Cold War, representing the separation of East and West. Soviet and American tanks briefly faced each other at the location during the Berlin Crisis of 1961.
Nathaniel Brown was the military police officer in charge on the night of 9 November 1989.
After the dissolution of the Eastern Bloc and the reunification of Germany, the building at Checkpoint Charlie became a tourist attraction. It is now located in the Allied Museum in the Dahlem neighborhood of Berlin.

Will it be enough to prevent the rebels from smuggling weapons?
All non-German visitors to East Berlin had to cross from West Berlin at the Friedrichstraße S-Bahn Station or, by road, at the Friedrichstraße/Zimmmerstraße Crossing Point – “Checkpoint Charlie”.
Beyond the red and and white barrier poles, the chicanes and other obstacles on the easter side became ever more elaborate as the years went by. On the western side, the wooden hut, replaced with variations over time, was surely a conscious emphasising of the provisonal nature of the Four Power division of the city and the unofficial status of the sectoral border as an international frontier.

My colleague photographer asks permission to pass through the checkpoint. The soldiers are high school students on a internship with the Dutch military.
Thats why they have no real weapons. After they get their high school diploma, their real army career can begin.

West Berlin, too, still had its bomb sites and there were also areas of dereliction on territory which, whilst physically within West Berlin, were, for historic reasons, detached parts of boroughs in the Soviet Sector or were associated with the railway network (S-Bahn and long-distance trains, but not the Underground Railway) which, even in West Berlin, was operated by the East German State Railways, still operating under its pre-war name of the "Deutsche Reichsbahn" - the "German Imperial Railways".
