In Patrick's (another Patrick) "living room" we share yet another meal of chapati. Here Mzee (old man) Chelimo takes one. He's the one I walked to last time I visited (about 25 km one way).
Rolling chapatti bread. After meeting some of the people here I tried my hand at rolling out some chapatti. I made about ten before it went from an amazing experience to dull and tedious. Needless to say I wasn’t nearly as fast at it as the Punjabis.
Brochette and chapati are two of our favorite foods in Rwanda! Mary, Helaina and me with the man we buy brochette and chapati from!
I only make stuff like this so I can eat chapatis :)
I learned that Broccoli stalk is totally awesome cooked up with Indian flavours - this has the usual - fresh chillies, yellow mustard seeds, chilli powder, turmeric. Honestly - I never throw away broccoli stalk now. I use the whole thing, including some of the leaves and all the bits that stick out around the broccoli and the stalk itself. I just love it. Now off to make chapatis so I can scoop up all this spicy goodness
Made this one using Mr Mueller's recipe for thickening up the sauce using roasted aubergine. I roasted half a bulb of garlic (for good measure) and blended it with the aubergine.
Thanks Mr Mueller, don't know why I didn't try making it this way before.
Picked up a book in a book exchange back in Botswana called St Jude's by an Australian woman who set up a school in Tanzania. Her school is for the very poorest kids.
As I was in Arusha, I asked if I could visit and so I was able to spend a special day with these kids.

Little baby Alec is having his first birthday party tonight, a little shy of his actual Christmas Day bday. I made some fire-roasted red pepper hummus (with lime and cream cheese and garlic, and omg...) and am now attempting some chapati for dipping. Chapati just sounds dirty no matter what kind of sentence you put it in :P
one of the things i couldn't figure out about industrial meat factory at all. he grows up divided with the family cause there was not enough milk for every little lambs. so he has to watch, through the fence in the same big room, watch all the lambs have a mum except of him. he just miiiiieeeeeee all day. so i adopted him like I'll adopt a puppy. (and he did running, following me like a little puppy! ) in few months he'll be send to "growing fat factory" no freedom, no sun, no running around so the meat stay soft. just eat and grow fat, then become one of the dish in our table.
