rp @laylafsaad: White supremacy is based on the belief of white superiority: a belief that white people are superior to people of other races, and therefore deserve to dominate over them. But issa lie. A purposeful, intentional lie. A lie intended to keep black and brown people in a state of inferiority, subjugation, oppression, confusion, and powerlessness. People with white privilege: it’s time to wake up from the lie, and start telling the truth. You are not superior. - #diversityandinclusion #nashvilleteacher #antiracism #highereducation #blackhistory #ally #teachershare #blackintheivory #whitefragility #changingthenarrative #ushistory #socialstudies #historyteacher #teacherproblems

rp @teachfortheculture: As an educator, how are you using your voice and your platform to advocate for a more equitable and just school systems for our youth? .. How are you using your voice and your platform to advocate for the rights and needs of our black and brown students, who largely and continually experience marginalization in many of our school districts in the USA, and for whom the current educational system was NEVER designed to serve!!? -- ... I have found that in most spaces, one of the barriers to creating a more equitable system is the SILENCE of the people who are benefitting the most from our current system: namely, our non-poc colleagues and their families. .. I have also seen many instances where our poc colleagues have steered away from speaking up and advocating for justice, for (legit) reasons such as fear of repercussions and retribution, fear of not having job security, fear of being further isolated, or just straight up being tired of always having to be "the one" fighting .. we gotta let that ish go, y'all, and that means all of us ... It's the only way we are going to begin turning the corner if we want to see real change and the best outcomes for our youth! ... Our young people also need to see us using our voices, so that they may be empowered to do the same thing in schools and communities as well. rp @antiracismdaily: Trump is racist, but so are other presidents throughout our history. And although some would argue that their actions “weren’t considered racist back then,” but racism, by definition, isn’t up for interpretation. Especially with the new addition that Merriam-Webster is planning on adding, thanks to the work of Kennedy Mitchum.

Let’s remember that racism is more than a political tactic. It’s a pervasive and devastating aspect of our society, created through generations of presidents and people practicing over time.

rp @wherechangestarted: White supremacy may be systemic, but it is far from passive. It works hard to maintain the power dynamics that uphold it. We cannot be passive in our attempt to dismantle it. Ever.

.

Antiracism requires you to be intentional. To be committed to moving through the process of becoming antiracist - generally, and specifically for any subject/topic you are having trouble with. To actively work at unpacking your racial triggers and replacing your racist tools of defense with tools of accountability. If you’re here, I’m guessing you get that.

.

It is far too easy to rest on passive thoughts in agreement, likes on social media posts, and feelings of solidarity and support while sitting on the side lines in this work. But no one can do your work for you. Only you can.

.

As we move further into 2020 and some of you find yourselves feeling less energetic about antiracism in comparison to how you started the year (all pumped up and ready to break some shit), I want you to take some time this weekend to think about how to set realistic and sustainable goals for yourself in this work. You need to get out ahead of prolonged burnout. I want you do be in this ACTIVELY for the long haul. I want you to maintain the drive and sense of urgency that you feel right now.

.

Be intentional and do what you need to do to make sure that happens. Let’s be real about putting in this work to create the world we believe in. rp @moemotivate: If fighting for Black liberation is divisive then I don’t want y’all unity.

What is unity to y’all...

Your unity is for Black folks to be murdered, oppressed & disenfranchised and for us to just quietly take the violence & suffer in silence bc you believe it’s our fault anyway.

Your unity is our silence bc our suffering is interrupting your day.

Y’all want to oppress & abuse us & you want for us to take it as though it’s punishment owed for being born Black into a society that hates our Blackness.

Your unity is us smiling while you abuse us.

Your unity is looking the other way while you exploit us.

Your unity is for us to comply with your dehumanizing treatment of us.

Your unity is to make Black folks suffer in silence & out of sight.

Y’all idea of unity is warped, abusive, and dehumanizing but somehow you get to lash out at us when we are speaking out against the pain that you’ll never feel, yet you seem to be an expert on how we’re supposed to deal with it.

“Be patient”, you say, “be peaceful”, “be loving”, “be graceful”, “be forgiving”, “be compassionate”—all things you never give to us. But we’re some how supposed to extend all these things to you, while “kindly” asking you to stop killing us.

You consistently & unrelentingly abuse us, & you won’t stop bc we didn’t say it nicely enough. Ridiculous.

White supremacy is divisive.

Racism is divisive.

Gender stereotypes & gender roles are divisive.

Misogynoir is divisive.

Homophobia is divisive.

Fat phobia is divisive.

Oppression is divisive.

The only people that lash out the most & the loudest when folks speak out against oppression are the ones that believe they have the most to lose if we put an end to the oppression.

RP @nmaahc

The assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. on April 4, 1968 dashed the hopes of black Americans for the commitment of white America to racial equality at home and abroad, as the number of black soldiers in Vietnam supporting the Black Power Movement increased dramatically. Pre-existing racial tension between black and white soldiers increased after King’s assassination, leading to a surge of inter-racial violence within U.S. forces in Vietnam and at home. #APeoplesJourney #ANationsStory⠀ ⠀

@Rachel_Cargle interview with @blackgirlinom. As someone who identifies as a #feminist, I began to really dig deep into the #movement to #educate myself so that I could show up fully. I realized quickly that #feminism had incredibly racist roots that had to be both acknowledged and uprooted before the movement could be truly effective.

rp @theconsciouskids: White people can experience prejudice, but not racism.

“Racial prejudice refers to a set of discriminatory or derogatory attitudes based on assumptions deriving from perceptions about race and/or skin color. Thus, racial prejudice can indeed be directed at white people but is not considered racism because of the systemic relationship of power.

Ricky Sherover-Marcuse asserts that "we should not confuse the occasional mistreatment experienced by whites at the hands of people of color with the systematic and institutionalized mistreatment experienced by people of color at the hands of whites”.

While expressions of racial prejudice directed at white people may hurt the white person/people individually or personally, and are never to be condoned, they do not have the power or authority to affect the white person's social/economic/political location and privileges.

Reverse racism is a myth because it tries to ignore the fundamental question of who holds more power/privilege between the individuals/groups involved; the myth of reverse racism assumes that racism occurs on a so-called level playing field.“ (Alberta Civil Liberties Research Centre) - #diversityandinclusion #nashvilleteacher #antiracism #highereducation #blackhistory #ally #teachershare #blackintheivory #whitefragility #changingthenarrative #ushistory #socialstudies #historyteacher #teacherproblems

.

“Why can’t we all just get along”

“Stop making it about race, were all the human race”

“It’s rude to protest because all lives matter!”

“When you bring these things up you’re just making a greater divide”

.

Believe me they are NOT calling for a greater world or for true justice in humanity. They want silence of the oppressed, they want comfortability for themselves. They want to keep their boat of white privilege undocked so they don’t lose the benefits they reap in a society like ours. Remind them that peace requires justice and you won’t let things go until things are changed. #diversityandinclusion #nashvilleteacher #antiracism #highereducation #blackhistory #ally #teachershare #blackintheivory #whitefragility #changingthenarrative #ushistory #socialstudies #historyteacher #teacherproblems

rp @christenacleveland: Indeed, conversations about racial inequality are often engineered to avoid making white people feel guilty.

Inequality exists because guilty people have produced societal systems that accommodate some people and alienate others. And inequality exists because guilty people continue to benefit from these unjust societal systems. All privileged people participate in our unequal societal structure – some perpetuate it knowingly, some perpetuate it unknowingly, and others resist it as revolutionaries. All who have ever perpetuated it knowingly or unknowingly are guilty. For them, experiencing guilt is a crucial part of the justice journey. The trick is to *use guilt* rather than be *used by shame.* This is difficult because we often confuse guilt and shame. Both are moral emotions that involve feeling bad. But guilt is constructive; it focuses on an act or action that is wrong. Guilt says, "I did something wrong." On the contrary, shame is destructive; rather than focusing on an isolated act, it spreads to the whole person. "Shame says, "I am wrong." Shame makes us want to walk away from our truest selves, the divine and community. Shame makes us want to avoid the truth. Guilt is underrated. Engaging it, meditating on it, confessing it, and repenting of it can be immensely helpful in conversations about inequality and reconciliation work. Guilt should be a centerpiece of the conversation, rather than something to be avoided. How do you use guilt in your practice of justice? Do you try not to use it?

rp @eliana.chinea: There’s nothing more annoying than reading on a website, or going to a diversity and inclusion event or panel, and hearing someone talk about D&I as merely a strategy that will make a company more money. Although yes, that is a side effect of being an ethical company, people of color are not tools or pawns for a bottom line. That is the very mindset we are trying to shift, and need to shift immediately. I realize this is not a popular opinion within the corporate world, but I’m less interested in what’s popular with a company than I am with dismantling these capitalist and dehumanizing systems of thought for the sake of the people of color working within them. Studies show the workplace is still highly segregated by race and class, with brown and black people working lower level positions and whites working upper management. To learn from their mistakes is not to lessen our debt to them, nor to the hard work of becoming ourselves, and effective”.

rp @eliana.chinea: You cannot do this work passively, or from a few posts or videos. You need to be doing this work with those of us who actually know how to unpack your racism, bias, and oppressive thinking. That means actually taking a training, and no not a two hour one that barely touches the surface. You need a full comprehensive training and you need to do them twice a year at a minimum. And no, a Diversity and Inclusion training is not the same as anti-racism.

.

Remember, stop hiring white folks to teach you anti racism, that’s perpetuating white supremacy. Hire BIPOC who actually do this work, not your nearest brown or black friend! Tag a brown or black friend who can help, tag your white friend who can use it! - #diversityandinclusion #nashvilleteacher #antiracism #highereducation #blackhistory #ally #teachershare #blackintheivory #whitefragility #changingthenarrative #ushistory #socialstudies #historyteacher #teacherproblems

rp @theconsciouskid: tweet by Sirry Alang that reads: “A reminder that you can be very nice to Black people and still be racist. And sometimes, your niceness is driven by racist ideas. Nice ≠ antiracist, kind ≠ antiracist. Diversity ≠ Antiracism.” - #diversityandinclusion #nashvilleteacher #antiracism #highereducation #blackhistory #ally #teachershare #blackintheivory #whitefragility #changingthenarrative #ushistory #socialstudies #historyteacher #teacherproblems

rp @uncolonia_history: Emancipation and self-emancipation came at different times in different places (especially considering it could either be imposed by the state/federal government OR forced by the enslaved themselves). However, once “freedom” was finally achieved, it was entirely unclear what that might mean after centuries of brutal oppression.
