rp @blackhistory: Slaves on a South Carolina plantation planting sweet potatoes, circa 1862.
āŖā¢ā¬
Fast forward to, December 19, 1865. Following the Civil War and emancipation, many freed black people in the South remained beholden to their former white masters.
āŖā¢ā¬
In South Carolina and other former slaveholding states, many freed people continued to reside in the same communities, sometimes on the same land, working for whites who had previously purported to own the men, women, and children as property.

rp @refinedtherapy: Pathologizing Black peoples attempts to be free dates to slavery. āFugitive Slavesā were considered to be mentally ill. Yep! Drapetomania was a mental illness that a white physician, Samuel A. Cartwright theorized as the cause of enslaved Africans fleeing captivity.ā
ā
This still shows up today. When Black people flee toxic/oppressive work environments, when we demand equitable pay, when we increase our boundaries and restrict white peopleās access to us, when we advocate for basic HUMAN rights, we are viewed as being āabnormal, difficult, rageful, unsettled, ungrateful, the symptoms go on and onā¦..ā
ā
The fact that someone seeking what is inalienably theirs leads to pathologizing should make us all really question who has been historically mentally ill.ā
ā
Keep fighting for whatās yours despite how long you havenāt had access to it. Freedom is yours! ā

#WokeBeautyLive was so much fun but what made it even more special was everyone and the positive energy. I was super honoured that my "mentors from afar" @erycafreemantle and @kymmenziesfoster were both able to attend. I met both women on the same day in 2016 when I entered the beauty realm and after over 10 years as a pharmacist it truely is amazing how much they inspire me. Eryca gave me the biggest hug when I first met her and I still remember that. Always willing to share their knowledge. I have only met them both 3 times and every time I learn so much. Another brand that has been super supportive is @kitoko_makeup. It really shows we can work together and empower each other. @_shemaliah @deebeautebydolly @keishadesvignes and @beatswithbrushes are some of the MUAs whose work I really love. Thanks for coming out ladies. Hope you had lots of fun

rp @blairimani: That conversation NEEDS TO HAPPEN. And yes, itās going to be uncomfortable. But who else is going to rise to the occasion and change Aunt Theresaās harmful white supremacy beliefs?! Maybe Aunt Theresa wonāt change, but you better know for sure.
Sometimes the best way to fight for justice is to stay in your lane. Itās much easier to tell someone else to clean their house instead of tidying your own. Thatās whatās been going on for a while but enough is enough.
Recognize your sphere of influence:
Are you most helpful talking to strangers online? Thatās what I do.
Or, are you most helpful talking to the people in your life? Maybe its both. Luckily, I donāt have racist relatives so I donāt have to pick.
If you can do something about this horrible racist world, why not give it your best try?! I believe in you.
Try. Exhaust ALL possible avenues and if your best doesnāt work, move on. Calling out racial ignorance despite backlash
-
Imagine you took a civil war tour.
-
Youāve met a fantastic group of people, and theyāve invited you on a private tour. Turns out itās at Fort Negley, the best and most historical place to learn about African Americans who built the fort. Could there be a better place?
-
Youāre excited about your evening so you arrive early. When the tour guide and the group arrive, you notice something different about the tour guideās shirt. Your smile wavers slightly as you get close enough to see the little confederate flag images decorating it.
-
You decide to give the guy a chance and not be too quick to judge. With a huge smile, you participate in introductions. But then you notice that the tour guide shakes all the white peopleās hands but skips yours. Maybe he didnāt see it, cool. You let it go and look forward to enjoying the tour.
It turns out, heās not too happy about the black history at Fort Negley and vocalizes it by degrading the black legacy.

Repost from @moemotivate. I canāt emphasize this enough. Anti-racism is a lifelong practice. Itās a daily quest to learn and unlearn. Itās a on-going commitment. It is not about being a good person or feeling good about yourself, itās about doing the right thing.
...
Itās about centering the pain and progress of Black people and people of color. Itās about identifying and eliminating racism from attitudes, beliefs, systems, structures and culture and redistributing resources equitably. Itās about humanity.
...
And therefore itās a life long commitment that has no destination, just on-going growth and progress. Itās not an identity or a achievement...itās a daily practice of choosing to dismantle white supremacy, identifying and relinquishing white privilege and breaking down these structures that dehumanize us.
...
Itās about coming to a place where we can all live freely in our full humanity. Thus itās not something you are or become, but itās something you actively choose to doādaily. So I ask you, what are you doing TODAY to prioritize anti-racism? Repost from @moemotivate.
...
Comment āAmenā if you agree.

rp @novareidofficial: If our work is not erased, it's undermined. Not seen as credible. Because weāre not seen as leaders, but submissive vessels in service of others. If you are inspired by black womenās work, GREAT - please credit it & that includes mine. When you erase my work & that of other black women in this sphere you are erasing history & us Brits have been erasing history for too long. But perhaps even more pertinent, by continuing to erase the contributions of black women you are participating in wh*te supremacy & it needs to stop.

rp @wearepushblack: Bond was a civil rights leader who dedicated his life to activism and educating the public about the history of the Civil Rights Movement and the struggles of Black Americans.
He was a founding member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in 1960 and helped found the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) in 1971. rp @eliana.chinea: When it comes to privilege we need to fully understand what that means, because we all have it just some more than others. And if that privilege goes unchecked you will fall prey to doing this work centering the oppressor rather than uplifting the oppressed.
.
One example can be seen as paying hundreds or thousands of dollars for social justice or anti racism courses run by white folks who earn a profit off your coins rather than volunteering their time for a BIPOC leader to be amplified instead.
.
Thereās a reason whiteness centers itself in this work, and literally everything else, and thereās a reason bias justifies you to pay them and not the BIPOC leaders who are more effective and have a lived experience guiding them.
.
Thereās also a reason why Latinx and Black women only have $100 in wealth on average as compared to the average white woman who has $40k in wealth. And thereās a reason the most truly diverse companies are the most innovative as well, but not the ones who tokenize diversity and just hire brown and black folks for lower level positions. Itās the companies who create equity for BIPOC and pay them equally for upper management roles, including them in decision making and amplifying their contributions.
.
So, what do you say we stop playing games and we start dismantling oppressive systems by creating equity for the oppressed?! - #diversityandinclusion #nashvilleteacher #antiracism #highereducation #blackhistory #ally #teachershare #blackintheivory #whitefragility #changingthenarrative #ushistory #socialstudies #historyteacher #teacherproblems
