Some more chalk art that I got shortly after I arrived at the Pasadena Chalk Art Festival. Nice rendering. Looks good enough to eat.

White Hill Reserve - I photographed 3 different mating pairs, and must have seen another half dozen or so pairing up. It was a bit like watching Heath Fritilarys, with other males often trying to join in.

A scene near Bishop, CA, from a few years back.

Thanks for visiting!

Dave

If you happened to be at Chalk Farm underground station the other day at around 11 at night you might have seen me hobbling past you on the way up the stairs.

I use to live in Chalk Farm its the top end of Camden Town not far from the famous Camden market. Never in my wildest dreams back then as a youngster did I ever imagine that I would be walking out of that tube station looking like this.

Think I am turning into that girl of my dreams.

Little thing No 1 Just before eating at the restaurant I pulled my hair back and clipped it up so as I wouldn't get my hair in my food.

Little thing No 2 While on the train and just after letting the lad next to me know the stop we were at was his stop ( long story might tell you one day) I took my heels off and put my flats on that I had in my bag Knowing that I had a walk from the train station to my car.

Even a year ago I would not of done such things.

in this picture looking east at Brussels station we see a Siemans ICE3 arriving with a service from Cologne. These super looking trains are capable of 210mph and run international services from Germany operating to Amsterdam, Brussels and Zurich to name a few destinations. The first sets appeared in 1999 and have recently been subject to a refurbishment programme which was supposed to be complete in 2020. Running on the adjacent track is a typical Belgium unit it is a 3 car AM80 EMU number 420 built in 1980. A stark contrast in designs but both have great character.

We could learn a lot from chalk....some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names and all are different colours - but they all have to learn to live in the same box!

My sister is down visiting from Calgary with her daughter Abbey and the other afternoon we drew this giant mural together out in the backyard.

Lovely memories made. <3

The Jasmund National Park (German: Nationalpark Jasmund) is a nature reserve in the Jasmund peninsula, in the northeast of Rügen island in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. It is famous for the largest chalk cliffs of Germany, the so-called Königsstuhl (German = "king's chair"). These cliffs are up to 161 m high above the Baltic Sea. The undisturbed beech forests behind the cliffs are also part of the national park.

Bus 27 taking chalk farmers to the chalk farm at Chalk Farm to farm chalk. Due to the food crisis the poor use chalk mixed with flour in making bread. I blame Boris Johnson.

Took the original image on Friday and am now awaiting my week-long company to arrive...just playing around.

Pretty much out of commission for the next week...will do my best to comment as much as possible...company has arrived.

We visited Butser Ancient Farm. It is a site of experimental archaeology and is open to the public at weekends and school holidays. They teach crafts from the time periods they cover I.e. from late Stone Age through to Late Anglo Saxon. Paid for courses this weekend were weaving and making stone tools. Free to try was carving and jewellery making in chalk and making string. A very interesting day.

The Hell-Fire Caves are an old chalk mine just off the A40 at West Wycombe in Buckinghamshire. They were later extended and became the venue for the Hell-Fire Club; you can read all about it here:

Nowadays, the caves, also known as West Wycombe Caves, are a popular tourist attraction.

This is a newly emerged Chalk Hill Blue butterfly, which had been left in the shade with its wings still open. The softer, subtle colours of UK butterflies, in my opinion, suit lightly shaded, diffused lighting.

Happy Easter to all my fellow Flickr friends!

It's late on an April Sunday afternoon, clouds and peekaboo light are beginning to appear from a drab day while I sip coffee at a city franchise. I often enjoy a dozen places near the city that I can access quickly, within 15 minutes should the weather turn favourable. Each location is unique, the light different, the landscape seasonally ripe, the feelings inescapable.

The land where this small abandoned school house sits now sports a 'For Sale' sign beside the barbed wire fence. I don't imagine the new owner will keep the building, I've asked a few folks the history but I haven't landed an informative answer for my prairie diary. I've visited here many a time over the years. Peering through a window, inside a few dusty desks and chalk board remain, as well a couple ruffled books on the floor.

The scenario is all too familiar, someone from the area will frantically appear and ask what the devil I'm up too. Today a young fellow asks why I'd want to photograph this derelict junk structure. I begin to understand where his perspective originates. He sees this place most every day, it begins to look all too familiar and worthless. I explain the prairies are often about the feelings they evoke, not the literal facts that determine locations on a grid map. And it is this interpretation where we discover meaning, significance, and imagination.

I suggest a movie called 'Waste Land', and he reluctantly agrees to give it a chance. And here I thought the day would be a wash myself.
