When I first saw this basin twenty years ago it had been chained. Chaining was a common 20th Century method of range improvement. Two big bulldozers were connected by ship anchor chain. The bulldozers ran parallel, and the chain pulled out the weed trees. In this case after twenty years, sagebrush clearly benefited.

Montagu, Sir Edward (1480s–1557), judge, the second son of Thomas Montagu (d. 1517), of Hemington, Northamptonshire, and Agnes, daughter of William Dudley of Clopton, near Oundle, was born in the royal manor house of Brigstock. His father, an attorney representing Northamptonshire clients in the common pleas from the 1470s until at least 1505, had prospered sufficiently to acquire the manors of Hemington and Hanging Houghton. Edward is said to have spent some time at Cambridge before 1506, when he was admitted to the Middle Temple, an inn with a strong Northamptonshire presence perhaps attributable to the benchership of Richard Empson. Little is known of his early career, save that he is mentioned as an attorney in the court of requests from 1519 and was a justice of the peace for his native county from 1523. A tradition that he was speaker of the Commons in 1523 has not been corroborated by any contemporary source, though it is possible that he was a member of parliament that year.
In 1524 Montagu became a bencher of the Middle Temple and delivered his first reading in the autumn. He was the second most junior serjeant at the call of November 1531, and as the junior serjeant-elect from his inn gave a second reading in that capacity. One of his principal arguments at the bar as a serjeant was made on behalf of Lord Dacre in the great case of 1535 which led to the Statute of Uses. In the same year he was counsel for Sir John Melton in another case of high importance, concerning the earl of Northumberland and the Lucy inheritance, a case that incidentally helped to establish the validity of contingent remainders. On the eve of the dissolution of the monasteries Montagu was steward for several houses, including the abbey of Peterborough, which had retained his father. He profited largely by the dissolution, receiving among other properties the numerous estates held in Northamptonshire by the abbey of Bury St Edmunds. On the outbreak of the Pilgrimage of Grace in 1536 Montagu acted as commissioner to the royal forces in Northamptonshire, and the following year Audley recommended him to the king as an honest and learned man fit to become king's serjeant, an office that he was granted on 16 October 1537 with a knighthood two days afterwards. He was assigned as an assize commissioner to the Oxford circuit, transferring to the Norfolk in 1540.
Montagu married three times: first Cicely (or Elizabeth), daughter of William Lane of Orlingbury, Northamptonshire; second, following Cicely's death, Agnes, daughter of George Kirkham (d. 1527) of Warmington in the same county, a chancery clerk and member of parliament for Stamford in 1515; and third, after the death of Agnes, Eleanor (or Helen), daughter of John Roper (d. 1524), chief clerk of the king's bench and attorney-general to Henry VIII, who was the widow of John Moreton. With his third wife he had at least five sons and six daughters; in his petition to Mary I of 1553, in which he disassociated himself from the attempt to place Lady Jane Grey on the throne, he said he was the father of seventeen children, six sons and eleven daughters. The eldest, Sir Edward Montagu (d. 1602), was father of Edward Montagu, first Baron Montagu (1562/3–1644), of James Montagu (1568–1618), bishop of Winchester, of Henry Montagu, first earl of Manchester (c.1564–1642), chief justice of the king's bench, and of Sidney Montagu (d. 1644), bencher of the Middle Temple and master of requests.

This expression frequently occurs in Royal Qranta and has given rise to considerable discussion, but it is believed by the best authorities to denote nothing more than freedom from knight service. In the State of New York, U.S.A., the Royal Grants of land by George I. commonly contain these words, and in the reign of Henry VIII. the "Manor of Eltham" was also used as a precedent for Royal grants in several parts of England, and apparently for the same purpose.

I machined these chain tensioners from AISI 304 stainless steel for use on Bates B.A.R. bicycle. The Sturmey-Archer ASC rear hub is held in place using the classic wing nuts. These wing nuts do not provide sufficient torque to keep the axel properly located in the dropouts. Given the thickness of the dropouts, the standard steel frame tensioners would not work, hence the custom job.
The tension rod was machined from 3/4 in. rod with the threaded portion eccentric to the centerline such that the spacers would lie flush with the side of the dropout. The clamps were grooved to match the rear radius and thickness of the dropouts.

According to the odometer on Joni's vehicle, it was a 684 mile trek from her home in South Carolina to downtown Harrisburg. It is basically a two day trip. Joni left her home early on Tuesday afternoon and headed north, planning on an early Wednesday afternoon arrival in Harrisburg. Joni left her home in guy mode, but planned on arriving in Harrisburg fully dressed as Joni. Obviously, Joni was going to have to change her clothes and gender somewhere along the way. The easy solution, of course, would be to pull into a cheap roach motel or a more expensive chain brand hotel at some point later in the evening and emerge en femme the following morning. However the whole Keystone trip and Conference is a bit of a financial strain on a woman living on a fixed income, as is the case with Joni. Checking into a hotel is an additional expense which Joni chose to avoid. Furthermore, the best time for Joni to drive was late at night and in the early morning hours when traffic was lightest. Additionally, checking into a hotel would slow down the trip. While there is a lot to be said for a good night's sleep, the reality is if she checked into a hotel at midnight, when she would wake up in the morning she would be approximately 200 miles further away from Harrisburg than if she had kept driving. Finally, Joni has had extensive experience sleeping in rest areas and changing clothes in her car. What's more, Joni has a favorite rest area where she can sleep and use a "family room" for changing. It's ideal. She has used it on other trips coming north, including prior trips to Keystone Conferences.
By the time Joni pulled into her favorite rest area a little after 3:00 a.m., she had already driven nearly 600 miles and quickly fell asleep in her car on what was a rather cold night. Joni bundled herself with blankets and nevertheless managed to sleep soundly through the remainder of the night, other than a sleep-walking visit to the men's room. Her slumber was otherwise undisturbed by the early morning traffic on the highway or idling trucks in the rest area. She awoke shortly after 9:00 a.m. and after stretching to work out some of the overnight kinks, Joni invaded her cooler for a chocolate protein drink which she used to wash down a Twinkie and some cookies. . . . Joni calls it breakfast. Joni then repaired to the men's room again where she took care of business. Upon exiting the men's room, she checked to see if the family room was unoccupied and available, which it was. She then returned to her car where she picked up her travel bag containing toiletries and a large pre-packed bag full of femme clothes and items and entered the family room, locking the door behind her.
Something needs to be said about "family rooms". Not all rest areas have one, but it's great when there is one. It appears that family rooms were designed as a convenience for changing baby diapers or breast-feeding mothers, or anyone desiring a higher level of privacy than the usual public restroom provides. They are usually very clean as well, as this one was. They are particularly ideal for transgender women as it allows them to avoid the gender-related controversies which upset some people and politicians who obsess over the issue of what public restrooms a transgender person can use.
Once inside, Joni started her transformation by first shaving her face with an electric razor and then using a soapy washcloth to wash her face. She then applied a facial moisturizer and brushed her teeth. At this point, Joni was still presenting as her male alter ego, but her transition began in earnest when she removed all of her clothes right down to her birthday suit. She proceeded to give herself a thorough handwashing to freshen up in lieu of a shower. (You can't expect everything in a family room!) It is to be noted that it helped that this family room was well-heated on this otherwise cold morning. Joni then began dressing en femme as quickly as possible, starting with panties and a panty girdle, followed by her bra and breast forms. She then added knee-high stockings and denim pants with dressy black flat heels. She completed her outfit for the ride to Harrisburg with a pink sweater top. She put on a wig cap, but did not put on her wig as yet because she prefers to put on her makeup before putting on her wig.
As virtually all women, especially T-Girls, know, putting on one's makeup can be a very time consuming process which must be done carefully. On this occasion, Joni shortened her usual makeup routine after moisturizing when she would normally apply beard cover, concealer, cream foundation and setting powder by using a Cover Girl All-in-One foundation. Once the All-in-One foundation had settled, Joni still took considerable time applying her eyebrow pencil, liquid eyeliner, eye-shadows, mascara, and blush, saving the application of her lipstick for last. Before Joni put on her wig, she added her necklace, bracelets, and earrings Only after Joni put on her wig du jour and combed it out, did Joni pick out a shade of lipstick from the several shades she had brought with her which she felt best matched or complemented her hair color and makeup.
Joni then packed up all her remaining clothes and items and posed for a couple of quick photos before she put on her black leather jacket and hoisted her hand bag over her shoulder and headed out the door to her car. This whole process of getting dressed and putting on her makeup still took approximately an hour and a half. It was already after 11:00 a.m. and Joni still wasn't done because she still had to put on her fingernail polish! Joni couldn't paint her nails in the family room because there was no chair for her to sit on, so she had no choice but to paint her nails outdoors in the chilly and windy conditions while sitting at a picnic table. That took a while, as the conditions caused some mishaps which required nail polish remover and do-overs, but at least the nails did dry quickly in the wind.
By the time Joni got back on the road and resumed her trip to Harrisburg, it was nearly noon time. She arrived at the Harrisburg Hilton Hotel shortly after 2:00 p.m. It should be noted that even though Joni occupied the family room for an inordinate amount of time, at no time did anyone else knock on the door of the family room seeking to access it. The only person who suspected anything was the security guard/ groundskeeper who in the course of his duties probably noticed that the lone occupant of the vehicle with the out of state South Carolina license plate was a guy early in the morning and was dressed as a women later when he was putting on fingernail polish seated at a picnic table. . . .Then again maybe he didn't notice.
