The way you move is meant to haunt me.

The way you move to tempt and taunt me.

I know you knew on the day you were born,

I know somehow I should've been warned.

I know I walk every midnight to dawn in chains.

In chains, I'm in chains.

In chains. I'm in chains.

You've got me dying for you, it's you that I'm living through.

You've got me praying to you, saying to you anything you want me to.

I know I crumble when you are around, start to mumble a bit of a false sound.

Straggle, stumble, shackled and bound in chains.

Years and years of salt water, sun, fog, cold and just plain weather have rusted these chains. Yet, they still do their job and add a beautiful aged feel to the waterline.

When I first saw this basin twenty years ago it had been chained. Chaining was a common 20th Century method of range improvement. Two big bulldozers were connected by ship anchor chain. The bulldozers ran parallel, and the chain pulled out the weed trees. In this case after twenty years, sagebrush clearly benefited.

Markarian’s Chain is a group of galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. It is called a “chain” due to the fact that, when viewed from earth, the galaxies fall along a smoothly curved line. It was named after B.E. Markarian, an American astrophysicist, who discovered their common motion in the early 1960’s.

Whitetail Fawn - Big Meadows, Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Have spent a lot of time during the month of June in Big Meadows and its adjacent forests. Have logged lots of morning hours and lots of evening hours in this time frame, especially while off work last week (vacation). For the second year in a row, the birthing period of Whitetail Fawns started out like a wildfire in the last week of May, but in the early days of June it all came to an abrupt end.

My theory? The predators (bears and coyotes) tuned in on the birthing activity soon after it started and so the mayhem began. The meadow became a hunting ground, both night and day. The smart Does adjusted to this predation and left their babes in thickets adjacent to people areas such as the Visitors Center and the Wayside/Camp Store. These particular babes were the lucky ones because they were allowed to reach 2 weeks of age, which is all that's required for a Fawn to have a good chance of fleeing from a predator.

So needless to say, I've been seeing the same 10 or so older Fawns the past few weeks (4 of which are 2 sets of twins) - with the exception of a few small ones here and there, but even they seem to disappear as the days go by. In the past week, there has hardly been any Whitetail activity in the meadow either in the morning or evening, it's as if the majority have turned completely nocturnal.

Up until last year, the Black Bears were the main predator of Fawns, which in a natural way has kept the Whitetail herd in check, but then another equation entered the picture in 2010: a healthy population of Coyotes. They are clever creatures, and here they seem to have no concern or fear of human presence, while they openly hunt the meadow during the daylight hours whereas the bears don't. However, one particular bear has been hunting the edge of the northern section of the meadow and has gone out into it to snatch at least one Fawn that I am aware of. But inside the woodlines is where the bears do the most predation as I have witnessed several times.

I know and understand that this is a natural process that's been occurring for many centuries in nature, and I do try to not get attached to the animals that I encounter frequently, but I can't help but cringe each time I see a Doe take her babe into the meadow's adjacent woodlines, because she's thinking that she is keeping the little one safe by moving it from the open meadow. It's a 'damned if you do and damned if you don't' scenario for them.

The whitetail herd at SNP is now taking a hit from two predator species instead of one. It'll be interesting to see what effect this has on the herd's numbers in the coming years.

So goeth the cycle of nature -- so goeth the food chain.
