We've all seen photos which caused the reaction: "What WAS he thinking?" This might even be one of those. Ipso Facto, I'm going to run through exactly what I was thinking when I did this photo the way I did.

I could have done a much tighter crop on the Skipper, and just made it a macro shot of the little creature. But...I don't often see Skippers on Dianthus blossoms, so that made the SETTING more than usually important.

If I widened it out any more, though, the Skipper would have been lost in all of the red blossoms, and I didn't want to do that, so I cropped this way. The Skipper is clearly the center of attention, but the Dianthus field is represented.

Also, for this shot, there was no way at all to crop to put the eye on the intersection of horizontal and vertical thirds...wouldn't work well. Next best thing, put the focal point -- the eye -- on either a vertical or horizontal thirds line. That's how this one was done.

We like to have natural framing to our photos. This particular situation, though, was chaotic, with no natural frame for composition, no matter how I did it. So, to constrain the chaos, I used the transparent framing. It does provide a limit to the edge of the image without distracting from it.

The photo as presented is a bit wild, but that's how nature often is. This little skipper was not at all awed by the jungle around it.

(Interestingly, or not, this was the fourth different macro set up used in the last outings. Today was Tamron 180mm Macro. Previously, Nikkor 105mm Micro, Nikkor 200mm Micro, and Nikkor 105mm Micro + 1.4x TC III.)

This mornings Super Moon caused great excitement as my 18 month old grandson spotted his current favourite thing.

The light was a lot better this morning than it was last night although the cloud cover on the next shot did provide an element of added interest.

As always I extend my sincere appreciation to all those who take the time to stop by and comment on my photos.

Midnights in Winter

The glowing fire

Lights up your face in orange and gold.

I see your sweet smile

Shine through the darkness

It's line is etched in my memory.

13/52 - self portrait challenge

It has been a very busy week and i have had very little time to plan a self portrait - so this will have to do. After the heavy rains from night before last the weather has turned and the temperatures have dropped. We are heading for an early winter it seems.

It looks like i may be able to purchase myself a speedlite - any opinions from other users out there, would be great to know if it worthwhile investing into one for off camera / fill flash.

This young man was trying to draw both giraffes to himself, log enough for his co-worker to run into the habitat to collect a fecal sample.

The giraffes may have been distracted by the lettuce, but my attention was on his tattoos. Even his employer is spelled out in ink.

another one of the hobby from sunday ,a distant shot but still worth posting imho .

The cause? Humans....The effect? Drought and heat.

I know this is dark and not pretty but find it necessary to document what is happening in Central Texas...not just here but other places in the world too. Our desperate earth cannot heal unless we step up and do our part. This weighs heavy on my mind during most of my waking hours.

'Cause every time we touch, I feel the static.

And every time we kiss, I reach for the sky.

Can't you hear my heart beat so?

I can't let you go.

Want you in my life.

Heavy thunderstorm caused our train to stop. Soon the lightning show started. I set up my camera over my passenger seat and started shooting. This was the best photograph I was able to capture.

A couple I know are going through a major transition. While talking to hubbie about it, I wished him good luck. He said, "this is not about luck. At this point it's all a matter of cause and effect." We left it at that.

Last weekend we had significant rainfall in Nevada City--over 10 inches. On Monday morning after the storm blew through, I opened the door to let the dogs out and was overwhelmed by the chirping of the frogs. All of a sudden, overnight, there were thousands of them, filling the air with their staccato songs. It gave me a moment of pause, and got me to thinking about that cause and effect thing. I think there may be a tad of wisdom in it.

we share together,

is even better,

than the moment before,

If every day was,

as good as today was,

then i can't wait until tomorrow comes.

Off to Penang tomorrow for a long weekend .... be back monday ... have a great weekend ........

oh lily, i know you love me

'cause as they're draggin' me away

i swear i saw her raise her hand and wave

goodbye

Cause the passion and pain

Are gonna keep you alive someday

a lot has happened in the last (almost exactly) 2 years. what i thought was a new beginning and a change to be made and to happen resulted in one of the worst years of my life. and when i say worst, i mean it. most of you witnessed portions of it thru my 365. and i'm grateful for the friendships that came out of that, especially when i just needed it - you know who you are. ♥

I first had months of anticipating positive change, months of being in a horrendous depression & not knowing what to do, and months of re-building. W/o the first two, I wouldn't have been able to get myself better, to know myself and what i know to be what's best for me.

I've never been more confident of knowing I will be able to handle what comes my way and never again, never - knowingly - put up with anyone's bullshit. My life just doesn't have time for that anymore, and honestly it never did.

While, I have moments of sadness b/c something triggers a bad moment, it doesn't dictate the rest of my day, nor define me, nor will I allow it to stand in the way of what other little things make my life awesome.

I wouldn't be able to give my dream a go and chase it, as I intend to now, w/o the whiplash I had last year. I wouldn't do over in the sense that I'd never want to feel what i felt again, but I am grateful that out of the bullshit came opportunity.

time to shit or get off the toilet,...

otherwise these pins and needles will turn into gangrene.

The infection of the fly begins when a fungal spore of Entomophthora muscae (Fly Death Fungus) lands on the fly's abdomen. This can be airborne or can also happen when the fly tries to mate with a fly already infected with the fungus. After only 24 hours the fungus reaches the fly’s brain. Within 72 hours, the fungus makes its way into nearly every part of the fly’s body, eating fat and other parts as it goes. It also starts to make its way into the nervous system. After 96 hours, the fungus totally takes over, causing the fly to ascend to a nearby high point, mostly on a flower or plant. Once that high point is reached, the fungus produces a glue-like substance that anchors the fly to its perch. After that the fly straightens its hind legs and opens its wings, a behaviour that ensures that the fungal spores are dispersed as widely as possible. The fly’s abdomen swells as fungal parts grow, which a little while later burst, ejecting spores into the air at a high rate of speed.

The cream / buff coloured bands on the fly's abdomen in my photos are the fungus itself.
