This building enjoys a prime position in Newark. It was originally a prestigious house, built in 1725. Owners included a brewer, Samuel Sketchley, one time Mayor of Newark, and a doctor, Patrick Kinmont, who may have added the two bay windows, which were at one time at the front.

In the late 1920s the house was converted into a garage, the bay windows were removed to give access to the showroom window. Gradually the early eighteenth century ornamental railings, piers and gates were removed. Eventually a single story extension was built across the front.

It was rennovated and converted to a shop in the 1980s. For more about that process see:

Tucked away up an alley from trhe city's impressive Castlegate Square is this demur little Catholic church. Opening in 1805, which is to say still during the penal years, it was Aberdeen's first Catholic church to be built after the Reformation. Inside, a replica of the statue of Our Lady of Aberdeen, lost at the Reformation.

Piping Hot played several pieces at the Castlegate Singers' Christmas concert. Val, who's conducting the choir, was one of Piping Hot's founder members (along with Rachel and me) but had to had in her red scarf 3 years ago as she couldn't fit all her music into those measly 24 hours a day.
