Castlegate Well in Aberdeen. "The Mannie" is the wee lead guy on top. Behind him is the Tolbooth which now houses the Sheriff Court.

Castlegate is one of the many quaint little roads in Scarborough, still cobbled. This view is looking south over the harbour and lighthouse.

Above the various entrance to the markets, on Angel Street, Castle Street and Castle Garden.
Description:
Each panel shows a building from Sheffield’s past, that was located in the area of the market.
Commission:
Sheffield City Council and the Market Traders.
Comment:
Woodall was originally commissioned to initiate a more comprehensive project, but the money was unfortunately spent in the design and manufacture of the archways over the entrance to the market area and the entrance to Angel Street from Fitzalan Square.

Castle Gate
Castlegate is one of eleven Quarters in Sheffield's City Centre. It is now bound by Commercial Street and part of the High Street to the south, Exchange Place to the east, the road named Castlegate to the north, Angel Street and Snig Hill to the west. Castlegate is the main thoroughfare to and from the North of Sheffield as it links Park Square to The Wicker, although it is intended that the Sheffield Northern Relief Road will take this traffic when completed, allowing Exchange Place, Castlegate and The Wicker to be downgraded. Castlegate, built along a portion of the River Don, was the old location of the slaughter houses. It also served as a back entrance to the Alexandra Opera House as well as the market quarter situated on the site of the former castle of Sheffield, hence the name of the street and quarter.

Fairfax House is a triumph of Georgian design. Bought by Charles Gregory, 9th Viscount Fairfax of Emley, for £2000 in 1759, he employed master architect John Carr of York to transform the existing building into a magnificent and fashionable townhouse. Lord Fairfax gifted the house to his sole surviving child making Anne Fairfax a property-owning woman in her own right.
Here both Anne and her Father spent the winter season. Standing on the thriving street of Castlegate, the main thoroughfare to York Castle, and sitting on the confluence of the rivers Ouse and Foss, Fairfax House was at the very centre of York’s polite society and perfectly positioned as a base from which to enjoy York’s burgeoning city-life and social scene.
A gate between the first and the second courtyards, erected by Matthias, Holy Roman Emperor in 1614.
