Waking the Dead: A History of Resuscitation exhibition at USC Norris Medical Library
De corporis humani partium appellationibus by Aretaeus of Cappadocia. 1552 first Latin translation of the 2nd century CE Greek work.
Little is known about Aretaeus aside from his Hippocratic medical acumen; he named the condition diabetes. On this page he discusses apoplexy, a paralysis state that many physicians of the time would mistake for death. Gluttony of food and wine or uncontrolled laughter was thought to be a cause of apoplexy, which caused a “refrigeration of the innate heat.” Aretaeus suggests purging the bowels, and if nausea ensues as well, all the better, as it often resuscitates the patient. This very rare volume was donated recently to USC’s Norris Medical Library by Dr. Paul Beigelman, more of his donations to the library are on display in an exhibit upstairs.

Got this vintage Samsonite beauty for under 4 bucks! The mirror is intact and the tray is there too. It was missing the key, but not to worry as the key from my red Samsonite train case works on this one too. I have a thing for vintage ftrain cases and own 4 of them. Actually I have 3 since Matilda "borrows" one for her Littlest Pet Shop pets to live in.

June 2010. "Great Paul" bell case outside Loughborough Town Hall. The bell was made at Taylors bell foundry in the town in 1881 for St Pauls cathedral. This case should be on display in the Queens Park April 2013.
