Personnel from the Forest Service and partner agencies gathered Aug. 8, 2017 to study and discuss decisions made and consequences of the Mormon Fire of 2016. The gathering was used as a learning opportunity for future fire managers and other personnel involved in making decisions about how to manage wildfires. Various locations were visited to illustrate different decision points during the fire and give participants a better idea of what types of landscape and challenges fire managers might face. "The fine arts department was asked to design and superintend the installation of these enormous parties to which the entire college was invited. The Christmas party was really terrific. It was in Phi Beta Kappa Hall. We took up all of the seats for dancing… The place was all lit by candles, and why in the world it didn’t burn down, I don’t know.”

Leslie Cheek, Jr.

Oral History Interview on May 11, 1976

Professor of Art and Architecture, 1935-1939

Head of the Department of Fine Arts, 1938-1939

"[Preparation] involved first of all removing all of the seats on the main floor of the auditorium. They were individually taken up and individually replaced the first year. Thereafter, since it looked like we were going to have to do that every year for Mr. Bryan, the seats were bolted to boards (about two by ten boards), and they were brought into the auditorium in sections and replaced.”

"There was a platform built which was, I suppose, about forty feet long and about six feet deep and eight or ten inches high. And then on top of that was a table, and in the middle of that long table was an enormous punch bowl, illuminated from below. Behind that punchbowl stood Ernest Cumber, who served the punch. He was about three or four feet above us when you added everything together, and he really rose to the occasion. This was a very important ceremony for Ernest, who on other occasions was the custodian and messenger in the administration office.”

Pripyat is an abandoned city in the zone of alienation in northern Ukraine, Kiev Oblast, near the border with Belarus.

The city was founded in 1970 to house the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant workers, and was abandoned in 1986 following the Chernobyl disaster. Its population had been around 50,000 prior to the accident.

After the disaster of reactor no. 4, the city of Prypiat was evacuated in two days.

Only after radiation levels set off alarms at the Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant in Sweden did the Soviet Union admit that an accident had occurred, but authorities attempted to conceal the scale of the disaster. To evacuate the city of Pripyat, the following warning message was reported on local radio: "An accident has occurred at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. One of the atomic reactors has been damaged. Aid will be given to those affected and a committee of government inquiry has been set up." This message gave the false impression that any damage and radiation was localized.

The government committee formed to investigate the accident, led by Valeri Legasov, arrived at Chernobyl in the evening of 26 April. By that time two people were dead and 52 were in hospital. During the night of 26 April / 27 April—more than 24 hours after the explosion—the committee, faced with ample evidence of extremely high levels of radiation and a number of cases of radiation exposure, had to acknowledge the destruction of the reactor and order the evacuation of the nearby city of Pripyat.

The evacuation began at 14:00, 27 April. To reduce baggage, the residents were told the evacuation would be temporary, lasting approximately three days. As a result, Pripyat still contains personal belongings. An exclusion zone of 30 km/19 mi remains in place today.

Inside the Distillery District, on the third floor of the case goods bldg, several delegates appeared during the Miss Teen Canada Scavenger Hunt in the Distillery and each finalist and competitor got a copy of Dance Current, dance magazine which is a valuable take-away worth about seven dollars each. The visit was worth much more to Christina Logan who may have secured an internship at the magazine this fall. Thats her in front, she is Miss Teen GTA and she is a serious dancer and lover of all things dancy.
