Carlsbad Caverns – One of the key attractions of Carlsbad Caverns is the bat flights program. Hundreds and thousands of bats (Mexican free-tail bats) will emerged from the cave usually shortly after sundown. Visitors can watch the bat flights in this small theater.
Carlsbad Fields north of San Diego celebrates fall each year with fields of yellow and orange marigolds with a pop of sunflowers.
I had Carlsbad Caverns to myself. I rode the first elevator down in hopes of shooting several panorama shots before other people showed up. Given that each exposure in the panorama set was 30 seconds long, each panorama was time hog. I didn't see another person for more than an hour.
I took this at the Flower Fields in Carlsbad. They have nearly fifty acres of Giant Tecolote Ranunculus growing on the hillside overlooking the ocean.
SODA STRAWS - Thin precursors to stalactites, they form as water drips from the ceiling, creating a ring of calcite on the outside of the drop. It grows into a hollow “straw” of uniform diameter until something plugs it, forcing the water to back up and flow down the outside.
