A shining beacon in the sunlight outside 2 Temple Place. This represents the Santa Maria caraval, Columbus's flagship and it was made by J Starkie Gardner. There are similar ships atop the posts at the bottom of the entrance steps to two Temple Place, William Waldorf Astor's former London home, and temple to his love of literature.
There are a number of similar weather-vanes dotted around the skylines of London - often on buildings by the Thames or connected with the Admiralty or merchants. I always think of the Nef at the V&A also.
Two Temple Place is London’s first venue to specifically showcase publicly-owned art from UK regional collections. The building is one of London's hidden architectural gems, an extraordinary late Victorian mansion built by William Waldorf Astor on Embankment.
The inaugural show is in collaboration with the William Morris Gallery in Walthamstow - we visited it yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it. Fiona MacCarthy, respected biographer of William Morris and author of the recently-published book "The Last Pre-Raphaelite - Edward Burne-Jones and the Victorian Imagination' gave an evening lecture there a few days ago.

These two members of Breaksea Caraval were performing together at the Farmer's Market in Minneapolis about a month ago. I just love accordion music, and I could have sat and listened to them play for hours. Unfortunately, they were just wrapping up, and I only heard two songs. Next time I'm around, I'll have to buy one of their CDs.
For the next 3 days there will be a "Carnaval 2016" in Tuxpan, Mexico.
3 nights of family friendly parades with dancing, music and sweets being thrown to the crowd by the passing Carnival vehicles.
It would seem to be a "rite of passage" to be involved in a Mexican carnival. I was impressed with the variety of age and abilities involved.
Two extremes struck a cord with me - a float with older people (nobody looked like they were aged under 70 years) and a float featuring people in wheelchairs.

Athens. Our hotel was switched for the last night in Athens and despite the fact that the Caraval was further from the city centre, the hotel was much nicer than the Divani Acropolis. A shuttle was available to Syntagma Square on a regular schedule for drop off and pick up.
parabéns à escola de samba morro da saudade, de passagem de mariana, pelo tetracampeonato no caraval de mariana!
