Nottingham’s Chinese sister city of Ningbo has given the city two magnificent Chinese stone lions which will be officially unveiled at Highfields Park at The University of Nottingham on 21 September.

The gift of the lions, which were lifted into place by crane this week, further strengthens the decade-long links between Nottingham and Ningbo, and in a reciprocal gesture, Nottingham is presenting a full-size replica of the famous Robin Hood statue to Ningbo as part of a delegation visit later in November this year.

The lions will be officially unveiled at a special ceremony by Councillor Jon Collins and Ningbo Vice-Mayor Mr Wang Jianhou at Highfields Park on 21 September, as part of the Chinese delegation visit to Nottingham.

Situated on a natural hill, and built between 1580 and 1588, Wollaton Hall is one of the country's finest Grade 1 listed Elizabethan mansions.

Located within the hall is the Natural History Museum housing wildlife exhibits and collections of rare and unique curiosity.

Set within 500 acres of rolling parkland, the site allows visitors of all ages to experience beautiful architecture and exciting exhibitions year round.

The park's dramatic natural beauty is host to many wildlife habitats including wetlands, grasslands, woodlands and avenues of ancient trees.

Herds of red and fallow deer roam free across the grounds and the lake creates a dramatic contrast to the stunningly situated hall.

In the grounds is the Camellia House, the oldest cast iron glasshouse in Europe.

“It’s entirely in keeping with this young man’s personality that his immediate response was to warn others to help carry those who were struggling and enter the water himself. This was incumbent on his selflessness.”

Giving a statement on behalf of the family after the inquest, Ruth Hyde of Broxtowe Borough Council said: “We have the happiest memories of Owen, who was a young, caring, lively and affectionate son of whom we are immensely proud.

“His enthusiasm for life meant he put his heart and soul into everything he did.

“He was sweet, innocent and selfless, and it is consistent with his character that he risked his own life to help save others who got into trouble in the water at Beeston weir.

“Owen tragically lost his own life, but we are so proud of what he did; of the young man that he was; how he lived his life to the full; and how he related to others.

“He was a wonderful son and he will be in our hearts forever.”
