Pictures just can't capture the sound and light and color of the Niagara River. Even the falls which are photographed constantly cannot be adequately captured. Their mood changes by the minute and that's another aspect of the Niagara - you have to observe it over time to really appreciate its majesty. I'm lucky to have lived a mere 20 minutes away and can visit it anytime. The falls of course are the main attraction but the whole Niagara gorge and escarpment and the river are equally as fascinating. The geologic history, the Native American history, the natural history of the area is so broad and deep that it could be learned over many lifetimes. Additionally the falls and the river are a shadow of what they were in the wild. At times nearly 70% of the Niagara River is siphoned off to the New York state Power Project to produce electricity, although this occurs at night when people aren't watching. The falls have been more of a source of power for industry than a national treasure. The short term production of goods was its biggest draw and for years the falls were lined with factories..until the Schoellfopf plant fell into the river and Robert Moses stole land from the Tuscaroras and did irreparable damage to te ecosystems, to build the NYS Power Project which generates about 2000 kW of electricity daily.

Anyway it is still a mighty river and still impressive. And Niagara Falls has taken some initiative to return it to a more natural state with meadows and wilds spaces along the river, to give a glimpse of what it was before it was blasted and dammed and altered so much.

One of my favorite things to do on a cruise ship is to get up early and capture the sunrise from the ship. These were taken on our day at Port Canaveral, Monday February 19th, 2024. You can see lots of brown pelicans as we approached Port Canaveral. You can also see the Kennedy Space Center, the Carnival Liberty and the Allure of the Seas at the port. On board the Royal Caribbean Vision of the Seas for an eight night cruise from Baltimore, Maryland to the Southeastern United States and the Bahamas (February 16th, 2024 to February 24th, 2024). The cruise embarks from Baltimore, Maryland with stops in Charleston, South Carolina; Port Canaveral, Florida; Freeport, Grand Bahama Island, Bahamas, and Nassau, Bahamas, before returning back to Baltimore.

A beautiful quote capturing the melancholia of Paris is by French novelist Julien Green:

“How strange Paris seems when you’re out in the street at night. It’s beautiful, but with a beauty that resembles sorrow. There’s something lonely and desolate about it…”
