A beautiful heron, if slightly odd in appearance, the Capped Heron is a resident of South American forested swamps, river courses and small pools. Although it seems adaptable to any habitat with water and has a wide distribution, it usually occurs only at low densities. Often seen flying along rivers or feeding in pools, the Capped Heron can be conspicuous, and easily is identified by its silvery white body plumage, black cap and striking blue face. In flight, it is best distinguished from other white herons by its small size and rapid, choppy flight style. The sole member of the genus Pilherodius, the Capped Heron is superficially simlar to the night-herons, but does not share their nocturnal feeding habits nor their distinctive juvenile plumage.

Sunday seems to be bird setup day in my backyard. At least until things pick up around here. So this past Sunday I practiced some more bird setups again. Of course, just like last weekend the bigger variety showed up after I went inside. But I did get a Chickadee shot I was more happy with then last weekend. Always room for improvement on this one though.

There were 12 red capped plovers running around on the beach

These are the first bird photos in a long time ... all taken over Easter around Chiltern in Victoria. In late afternoon as drinks were being served back at camp, I found this confiding male beside one of the dams on our host's property.

As anyone who's ever seen one knows, male Red-capped Robins are a spectacular sight in the "monotonous hues" of the Australian bush.

("monotonous hues" were words used by Major Mitchell when describing the ability of another bird to enliven the bush -- the beautiful pink cockatoo that now carries his name).

John sporting his flat cap. I love meeting new people and listening to their fascinating life stories of time gone by. John grew up in Scotland, born in 1944 nearing the end of World War Two.

Born in hard times he remembers how a family member would exchange bags of coal for fresh meat and vegetables or even clothes.

John wanted to be a Doctor, he has a great brain and at 72 years old when it comes to Math he is razor sharp.

The rain got heavier the closer we got to Nice, but JJ and I were determined to get the best photos from the boat that we could! Here, you can see the Cap-Ferrat lighthouse, with Nice in the background.

The lighthouse has been listed as a Monument Historique (national heritage site) since 2012. Built in 1732, the lighthouse was designed to replace an ancient 16th century fire tower. Destroyed in 1944, it was rebuilt in its current form after the war.

It provides a unique view that extends from l'Estérel as far as the Italian coast. The lighthouse is currently closed to the public. (From www.explorenicecotedazur.com/en/info/phare-du-cap-ferrat-en/)
