The Odeon of Herodes Atticus is a stone theatre structure located on the southwest slope of the Acropolis of Athens, Greece. The building was completed in 161 AD and then renovated in 1950.

In ancient times, Odeons were built for musical contests and this ancient stone theatre has gone on to host some of the world’s best musical performances during the last 60 years since its modern day re-opening, including Nana Mouskouri, Luciano Pavarotti and Frank Sinatra to name a few.

Situated in the western central part of Bhutan, Thimphu is the only city in Bhutan and also the capital of the country. The ancient city of Punakha which was the capital city was replaced in 1955 when Thimphu became established. In 1961 it was officially declared by the 3rd Druk Gvalpo, Jigme Wangchuck (King of Bhutan), to be the country's capital. Before 1960, Thimphu consisted of a group of hamlets which were scattered across the valley including Changangkha, Changlimithang, Langchupakha and Taba. The city is spread out in a north-south direction on the west bank of the Raidak River at an altitude ranging between 2,248 m (7,375 ft) and 2,648 m (8,688 ft) and this makes it the fourth highest capital in the world. The surrounding hills rise to a height of 3,800 m (12,467 ft).

London, capital city – it’s alive, well, and full of vim and colour! Even the pedestrian crossings have taken on a new life… come and see for yourself some time!

London –

National Theatre: opened 1962

London Eye: opened 1999

Both still going strong.

Egyptian obelisk of Ramesses II from Heliopolis stands in the centre of the Piazza. The "twin" churches of Santa Maria in Montesanto (left, built 1662-75) and Santa Maria dei Miracoli (right, built 1675-79) stand in the background.

How about this for an aerial view? It’s of the Palace of Westminster in London, more commonly known as the Houses of Parliament, as seen from the London Eye ferris wheel.

The palace is home to the House of Lords and the House of Commons, and was built between 1837 and 1860. The architect was Sir Charles Barry, assisted by Augustus Pugin – both of whom died before work was complete. It is, of course, at the very heart of political life in the United Kingdom.

The London Eye is the result of an architectural competition to provide a new millennium landmark for the capital. Standing 135m tall, it’s apparently the world’s largest cantilevered observational wheel. And pretty good it is, too.

The Old Town Hall Tower, built in 1338, is one of the most striking buildings in Prague. In 1364 the Old Town Hall Tower was knocked into a private house adjoining it, which in turn was connected to other houses beside that. This amalgamation of buildings became known as the 'Old Town Hall'.

Ready for lunch… the Noble Rot restaurant in Soho, London.

Years ago this used to be the celebrated Gay Hussar, much favoured by politicians, authors and media people. In my experience, the Noble Rot is a worthy successor, with excellent food and an overwhelmingly large wine list. Epicurean delight!

Many streets and squares in Edinburgh, the Scottish capital, are crowned with some of the most exquisite Georgian architecture you’ll find anywhere.

This, for example, is a terrace in Charlotte Square, an elegant 'garden square' designed by Scottish-born Robert Adam (1828-92), the most fashionable and sought-after neoclassical architect of his day.

Little wonder, then, that the area forms part of a Unesco World Heritage Site, designated in 1995 for its outstanding cultural value.

A view looking south from a second floor walkway midway through the four-story building. Artwork from local artists is displayed throughout the building. This is known as the "People's Gallery," a display of over 160 artworks that, since 2005, has been an annual showcase for works by Austin artists and arts organizations. The People's Gallery reflects the artistic excellence and diversity of Austin, in addition to promoting the City's cultural and economic initiatives.

Rome wasn't built in a day and you'll need much more than a day to take in this timeless city. The city is a real-life collage of piazzas, open-air markets, and astonishing historic sites.

Rome is the capital of Italy and the largest and most populous city in the country. It covers an area of 1,285 square kilometres and has nearly 3 million residents.

Most Visited Tourist Attractions In Rome , The Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Roman Forum, Spanish steps, Piazza del Campidoglio, Castel Sant’Angelo, Vatican, St. Peter’s Basilica, Colosseum, piazza Venezia, piazza Navona, piazza Barberini, piazza della Rotonda, piazza della Minerva ,piazza del Popolo etc

Well, what do we have here? Very obviously, this is number 1 St John Street. It’s on the junction with Cowcross Street in Smithfield, London EC1 – and what grabbed my attention, of course, was the lettering set on a tiled background. Big enough to be seen by the most short-sighted person, I’d say!

I don’t know why the sign was made in this way, or whether the address had any significance or importance. It’s not dissimilar to signs in Fleet Street, not that far away and once the heart of the British newspaper industry, but that’s probably a coincidence.

All I do know is that the property was built in the mid-1880s in a ‘Venetian’ style, and – quite unrelated – that St John Street takes its name from the Priory of St John, which was one of the great local landowners in the Middle Ages.

And finally in this short London Eye series, here are the four spires of the Victoria Tower. As well as being the royal entrance to the House of Lords and House of Commons, the tower is also the repository of the Parliamentary Archive. Every Act of Parliament since 1479 (and much else besides) is stored here.

Behind the spires can be seen the four chimneys of the old Battersea Power Station, once a major provider of the capital’s energy and now a centre of shopping malls, restaurants, a cinema, upmarket apartments, exhibition spaces, a heritage trail, art galleries and goodness knows what else.

Avenue of history, framed by nature.

From the Siegessäule through the Tiergarten, the view leads straight to two of Berlin’s most iconic landmarks: the Brandenburger Tor and the Fernsehturm. A perfect alignment of past and present, framed by a summer sky and a sea of green.

Santiago, Region Metropolitana, Chile - Wide and clean skyline of Santiago, the Chilean capital, under a dramatic blue and cloudy sky, focusing on the financial downtown district of Vitacura and with the snowed Andes mountain range visible at the back.

Also called the Monument of Light or The Millennium Spire.

This is a large, stainless steel, pin-like monument 121.2 meters in height, located on the site of the former Nelson's Pillar on O'Connell Street.

The Santa Lucia hill in downtown Santiago de Chile, a landmark historical site where the city was founded by the Spanish colony in 1541 by the conquistador Pedro de Valdivia as an 8x10 blocks grid.

Shortly after establishing Santiago, Valdivia proceeded to the south of Chile and launched a large scale war against the native people, leaving Santiago unprotected and in the hands of his own mistress, Ines de Suarez.

When on September 11 of 1541 the Picunche natives attacked the city, Suarez ordered the indiscriminate execution of all native prisoners. The Europeans then proceeded to behead them and place their heads on pikes and to throw the heads toward the attacking locals who fled in terror in the face of the barbaric act, similar to what the French would practice in the 20th century in Algeria and Morocco with its Foreign Legion mercenaries, or even more recently by NATO in Syria with its ISIS/Qaeda/Nusra/HTS mercenaries.

The city was saved in this way but one could argue the war against the native Mapuche people continues until this day, a contrast to the swift defeats suffered by the much larger and more technologically equipped Inca and Aztec empires.

Lisbon is the stunning capital city of Portugal, and is one of the most charismatic and vibrant cities of Europe. It is a city that effortlessly blends traditional heritage, with striking modernism and progressive thinking.

The Portuguese capital is constantly recognised as one of the greatest cities in the world.

Lisbon is Europe's second-oldest capital , once home to the world's greatest explorers, like Vasco da Gama, Magellan and Prince Henry the Navigator, becoming the first true world city, the capital of an empire spreading over all continents.
