Went to Brussels this week on work, the weather was very grey and depressing. During one afternoon decided to go for a walk to discover the city. At the Place Royale square or Koningsplein found this picturesque painting of an old guy looking at me in a building facade of the Rue de Namur.

Located three blocks west of the Illinois State Capitol Building is the Sargent Office Building, home of the Illinois Municipal League (IML). The building is named for A. L. "Lon" Sargent, who served as executive director of the IML from 1943 to 1968, and his son, Steven Sargent, IML executive director from 1968 to 1989.

This beaux-arts style office building was completed in 1912 and, until the early 1930s, was the clubhouse of the Sangamo Club, a private dining city club for business, government and community leaders. The Illinois Municipal League first established offices here in 1935, and has owned the building since the late 1980s.

The Sargent Building is a contributing building within the 2015 Extension of the Central Springfield Historic District listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The handsome, Beaux Arts style building on the corner is the Stuart Broadwell Building. Located catty-corner from the Old State Capitol Building in downtown Springfield, the structure was built in 1917 for Broadwell's Drug Store and remained a drug store until 1981. Since then the building has been home to a variety of retail establishments on the ground floor, and professional offices on the second and third floors.

The Illinois Governor's Mansion (known until 2018 as the Illinois Executive Mansion) has served as the official residence of Illinois' Governors and their families since 1855. The Mansion is located in the Old Aristocracy Hill neighborhood of Springfield, blocks from the State Capitol. The Italianate-style mansion was designed by Chicago architect John M. Van Osdel.

The 16-room manor is one of the three oldest continuously occupied governor's mansions in the United States. The Governor's Mansion has undergone several renovations over the years including an extensive $15 million project completed in 2018. The mansion was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

A view looking west on Monroe St. from 7th St. in downtown Springfield, Illinois. Seen on the left is the Paul Findley Federal Building & U.S. Courthouse. Constructed in 1930, the three-story Paul Findley Federal Building & U.S. Courthouse is named after Paul Findley, former U.S. Representative from Illinois, who served from 1961 to 1983.

The courthouse is clad in gray limestone with decorative terra-cotta crests, combining Federalist, Neoclassical, and Art Deco styles. The district courtroom is one of the most significant interior spaces remaining in the building, with classical styling in its wood door frames, walnut paneling, and decorative plaster ceiling. Currently used as both a federal courthouse and an office facility, the Findley building has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978.

Located immediately west of the Coliseum, the Cattle Show Pavilion is a large open, brick barn with a round window at the top. Constructed in 1909, the building was designed by Chicago architect Richard E. Schmidt in the Romanesque Revival- style. The brick barn features limestone trim and arched entrances surmounted by large circular windows. The raised center roof section has a band of windows along the roof line for ventilation.

This building, which faced demolition in the 1990s, was rehabilitated and still serves as a warm-up ring for horses that compete in the Coliseum next to it.

The Central Springfield Historic District embraces the commercial core of Springfield, Illinois. Centered on the Old State Capitol, which served as the Illinois state house from 1840 to 1876, this area includes an outstanding number of two and three story late 19th and early 20th century commercial structures, intact for most part on the upper facades. These buildings included hotels, drug stores, groceries, clothing stores, and dry good stores. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, and was expanded in 1986 and 2015.

Central Library is the main branch of the Austin Public Library system, which includes 20 branches, the Austin History Center, and a recycled bookstore. Often referred to as Austin's "Library of the Future," Central Library opened in late 2017. The six-story, 200,000 sq. ft. building is designed to hold over 600,000 books and offers a living rooftop garden, reading porches, an indoor reading room and a bicycle corral, large indoor and outdoor event spaces, a gift shop, an art gallery and a cafe. There is even a "Technology Petting Zoo," where visitors can toy with some of the latest gadgets.

In 2018 Austin's Central Library was selected for TIME Magazine's 2018 list of World's Greatest Places! Culled from over 1,200 editor and expert nominations from around the world, the list highlights 100 destinations that are breaking new ground, leading industry trends and offering visitors an extraordinary experience.

The library and bridge are at the center of the larger Seaholm District Project which has transformed a formerly industrial section of southwest downtown Austin into a vibrant urban neighborhood.

2 Chronicles 7:14

"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."

The Congress Avenue Bridge is home to the world's largest urban bat colony, which is composed of Mexican free-tailed bats. The bats reside beneath the road deck in gaps between the concrete component structures. They are migratory, spending their summers in Austin and the winters in Mexico. It is estimated that 1.5 million bats reside underneath the bridge each summer.

At dusk each night from around mid-March to early November, the Austin bats emerge from under the bridge to blanket the sky as they forage for food. The bats fly primarily to the east across Lady Bird Lake. This view was taken from below the bridge near the Lady Bird Hike and Bike Trail on hill adjacent to the Austin American Statesmen. Residents and visitors can see the bats from the bridge, from the sides of the river and from boats.

This prairie style and arts and crafts influenced apartment building was occupied by the family of Abraham Barker, who constructed the Miller Apartments shown previously. While the date of construction is not known, the building was purchased and modified by Barker in 1915.

According to the Fever River Research Report on the Architectural Resources of the Enos Park Neighborhood (1997, revised 2005) a total of 25 apartment buildings have been identified in Enos Park dating between 1892 and the mid-1930s. The construction of these buildings are primarily concentrated in the south half of Enos Park. 704-706 N. Fifth St., also known as the Barker Apartments, is another example of the multi-family, middle-class housing available to residents of Springfield's Enos Park neighborhood in the late 19th and early 20th century.

This property is identified in the Fever River report as a potential candidate for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.

A view of the plaza and south entrance to Austin's City Hall. Built of Texas limestone and sitting on the site of a once-raucous 19th Century bordello district, Austin’s copper-clad City Hall, completed in 2004, is the work of lead architect Antoine Predock, principal of Antoine Predock PC. The building was designed in the shape of an armadillo with a tail extending over Second Street. Prior to 2004 Austin’s City Council had occupied a Municipal Building that had last been expanded in 1938, largely funded by the Public Works Administration.

Austin wanted its city hall building to fit the spirit of the city, which the Dallas Morning News has described as a "crazy-quilt vitality, that embraces everything from country music to environmental protests and high-tech swagger." The building's angular design has been widely praised. Predock has been quoted as saying that he designed the building "not as a "suit-and-tie" city hall, but rather as a reflection of the warm informality that characterizes Austin."

Austin is the capital of the State of Texas, as well as the seat of Travis County. With a population of just under one million residents, Austin is the 11th largest city in the United States. The Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos Metropolitan Area, now with a population of 2.3M, is one of the fastest growing large metropolitan areas in the country having added more than 579,000 residents since 2010.

A view of the south side of the 400 block of E. Monroe St. in the Central Springfield Historic District listed in the National Register of Historic Places. All of the buildings in this view were constructed in the final quarter of the 19th century. The taller building partially shown on the far right is the Odd Fellows Building built in 1896, and extensively altered in 1965 when given a Mid-Century Modern facade. The building houses the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. All of the other buildings in this block more or less retain their original Italianate and Romanesque Revival architectural style.

A view of the art deco style State Journal Building in the 300 block of 6th St, between E. Capitol Ave. and Monroe St. Completed in 1929, this was the headquarters of the State Journal-Register newspaper until 1982.

The SJ-R is the product of two newspapers: the Journal, founded in 1831 as the Sangamon Journal; and the Register, founded in 1836 in Vandalia, the state capital from 1820-1839. The Register relocated to the new capital city of Springfield in 1839. In 1974, The State Journal merged with its rival, the State Register, to become the State Journal-Register.

The Journal became a Copley newspaper in 1928, and the Register was acquired by Copley in 1942. In 2007, the State Journal-Register was sold to GateHouse Media.

The State Journal Building is a contributing property within the 1986 Extension of the Central Springfield Historic District. The District was first added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
