In response to my love filled blog post about Cape Cod Popcorn: erincooks.com/cape-cod-popcorn/, the Cape Cod PR folks sent me a case of chips.
Dear Friends: Please say you'll take some off these huge bags of temptation off my hands?!
Seven of Them
Gear used:
FUJIFILM X100T with 23 mm fixed lens: In this case, I missed not having a lens with longer focal length. I couldn’t get closer to the subject, I had to resort to some aggressive cropping during post-processing.
The rationale behind the settings:
Mode: The notes say the mode was aperture priority — Given the light conditions, I must have started by setting the ISO to native 200 — Aperture: f8.0 is meant to be small enough with this abundance of light, and possibly a little sharper than f5.6. Shutter Speed: 1/480 is much faster than needed, but I didn’t see any objection to it. Would it have made sense to use the built-in ND filter of the camera and to utilize a larger aperture and slower shutter speed? I don’t believe it would have made much of a difference in the visual effects of the picture.
During the shooting, I had already selected VELVIA for saturated colors to emphasize the yellow against the black background. Exposure compensation was set to -1 to darken further the background. Photometry was in the usual choice of PATTERN. Sharpness was set to 2 or HARD. To make sure of the desired emphasis on the color, the saturation was set to HIGH.
File utilized in preparing the photograph:
Although I was trying to get the photograph completely made in the JPEG generated while shooting, I ended up to use the RAW file to have a better handle on the tonal values.
Adjustments during post-processing:
My main goal to darken the background as much as possible: I started by setting the tonal curve to STRONG contrast. I pulled down both dark and shadow values. Reduced clarity, increased de-haze to its maximum value to hide the visible details of the background. The picture was taken in 16:9 aspect ratio. There was a table below the frame and plants or bushes on the left side. I excluded all these by cropping the picture into a smaller square format. I kept the film simulation the same as the one I had used while taking the picture: VELVIA and with the same motivation to keep colors as vivid as possible, I increase both vibrance and saturation values in LR.
