This famous hike winds through the Gorges de la Jogne, a river formerly called Jaunia - La Froide. In the heart of a lush nature, hikers discover a haven of freshness while walking along this sometimes narrow path.

Along the river, the path connects the village of Broc to the Montsalvens Dam. Wooden bridges, tunnels and galleries enhance the hike, which turns into an adventure for both young and old. Picnic spots are available along the path, for an energising break along this family trail.

Architectural wonders highlight the path. In Broc, the Jogne River flows into Lac de La Gruyère at La Maison Cailler, the Swiss chocolate factory founded in 1898. Further up the Gorges de la Jogne, you will find the Montsalvens dam. This structure, which dates back to 1921, is the first double arch dam in Europe. As you walk along it, you will be able to admire the sublime view of the Jogne Valley and the Dents-Vertes de Charmey.

Our advice:

To prolong your hike, it is possible to go to the village of Charmey along the edge of the Lac de Montsalvens. Les Gorges de la Jogne are also part of the Chemin du Gruyère, which links Charmey to the medieval city of Gruyères.

San Giulio Island or St. Julius Island (Italian: Isola di San Giulio) is the only island within Lake Orta in Piedmont, northwestern Italy. The island is 275 m (902 ft) long (north/south), and is 140 m (459 ft) wide (east/west). The most famous building on the island is the Basilica di San Giulio close to which is the monumental old seminary (1840s). Since 1976 it has been transformed into a Benedictine monastery.

Geography

The little island, just west of the lakeshore village of Orta San Giulio, has very picturesque buildings and takes its name from a local patron saint (Julius of Novara), who lived in the second half of the 4th century. The Church of San Giulio, Castellanza, which is located in Castellanza, Varese, northern Italy, was named after the island.

The island is inhabited permanently by few families and the most historically relevant buildings are the Basilica di San Giulio and the Mater Ecclesiae Abbey. Most of the houses on the island are holiday houses or second houses.

History

The human presence dates back to the Neolithic and the Iron Age. According to the legend of Julius of Novara's life, during the roman period the island was abandoned.

In the 5th century, a small chapel (oratory) was erected on the island, probably to commemorate the evangelizer Saint Julius, who had died there. From archaeological finds, it is known that a new, larger church already existed in the 6th century: here Filacrio, the bishop of Novara, asked to be buried.

Around the same time, an octagonal building - probably a baptistery - was erected in the middle of the island. Every trace of it disappeared in the 19th century when the massive building of the seminary was built. In the 12th century, a new romanesque basilica was built, thus altering the previous one to some extent.

The religious reformer William of Volpiano (Saint William of Dijon) was born on the island in 962, in the fortified castle located on the island, whose large walls were called "Queen Willa's walls" from the name of king Berengario II's wife.

Yellow stagshorn, is a jelly fungus, a member of the Dacrymycetales, an order of fungi characterized by their unique "tuning fork" basidia.

It has bright orange, yellow or occasionally white branching basidiocarps, which are somewhat gelatinous in texture and slimy to the touch (hence the specific name). It is relatively large for a jelly fungus, and can reach up to ten centimetres in height. It is widespread and common, and its bright colour makes it stand out in its habitat. It grows on decaying conifer wood, typically stumps and roots, although this may not be obvious if the wood is covered in leaf litter. It fruits throughout the year, but is most commonly seen in autumn.

It is not poisonous, but its tough gelatinous texture and nondescript taste and odour make it unattractive as a food. Its striking colour has led to it being used as a garnish on occasion, however.

Another attractive jumping spider I found in Gainesville recently. I find that it's difficult to get them to look directly into the camera like this, so I was pleased to get this shot. Single shot, flash lighting.

Leucojum vernum, called the spring snowflake, is a species of flowering plant in the family Amaryllidaceae. It is native to central and southern Europe from Belgium to Ukraine. It is considered naturalized in north-western Europe, including Great Britain and parts of Scandinavia, and in the US states of Georgia and Florida. This spring flowering bulbous herbaceous perennial is cultivated as an ornamental for a sunny position. The plant multiplies in favourable conditions to form clumps. Each plant bears a single white flower with greenish marks near the tip of the tepal, on a stem about 10–20 cm (3.9–7.9 in) tall, occasionally more.

The Latin specific epithet vernum means "relating to Spring". Its close relative, Leucojum aestivum, flowers in summer.

Description

Leucojum vernum is 12–35 cm (4.7–13.8 in) tall in flower. Its leaves, which appear at the same time as the flowers and continue to elongate during flowering, are 5–25 mm wide and 10–25 cm (3.9–9.8 in) long, generally reaching to below the level of the flowers. The flowering stem (scape) has a small central cavity and two narrow wings. The pendent flowers appear in spring and are usually solitary, rarely in an umbel of two. The flowers have six white tepals, each with a greenish or yellowish mark just below the tip. Each tepal is 15–25 mm long. The whitish seeds are about 7 mm long.
