This is a report on the feast of St. Sebastian that was celebrated in the Sicilian town of Tortorici; the feast was held on January 20 of last year 2018. The devotees men go "naked" to the Holy as a sign of penance, they are dressed in white with a shirt and trousers, an handkerchief folded in a triangle shape on the pant and they walk barefoot; women, even they walk barefoot or wearing only white stockings, wearing white shirts and skirts, an handkerchief covering her head: all devotees, "naked" and not, accompany the saint in procession.
The religious rite is celebrated in the Church of St. Maria Assunta , with the participation of local authorities who continue an ancient tradition, and that is to deliver the keys of the city, as a sign of devotion to the Holy . At noon starts the procession through the streets of the City. The artistic "float" is carried only by the "naked" , this is a privilege but also a duty of penance . The first stage of the procession is in the River Calagni where devotees invoking the grace , this rite is the complex relationship of the city of Tortorici with the rivers: the rivers have always provided water for the food, for irrigation fields, but often the rivers have destroyed or damaged the territory, so... the Holy is invoked to ward off damage . After the stop in the River Calagni, the procession resumes through the streets of the town.
In Sicily, the oldest traces of the cult of San Sebastiano date back to 1347, when, on the occasion of the terrible epidemic of bubonic plague that hit all of Europe, the saint was proclaimed patron and protector of Palermo.
This epidemic spread a great devotion to St. Sebastian because the saint, tied to a column and hit by arrows, was considered the symbol of humanity pierced by the plague's arrows.
on 20 January 2018, in Tortorici, the celebrations in honor of San Sebastiano were performed in a sad and reduced form, as the whole community was close to the pain of Chiara's family, a very young girl of 20 who lost her life in a car accident, with the car crashing into the river bed that flows through Tortorici.

Questo è un racconto fotografico della festa di San Sebastiano celebrato nella città siciliana di Tortorici, festa che si è tenuta il 20 gennaio dekllo scorso anno 2018. I devoti vanno "nudi" al Santo come segno di penitenza, essere "nudi" si intende in questo caso, essere vestiti di bianco, gli uomini indossano una camicia, dei pantaloni con un fazzoletto piegato a triangolo che cinge la vita e camminano scalzi; anche le donne camminano a piedi nudi o indossano solo calze bianche, indossano camicie e gonne bianch ed un fazzoletto copre la testa: tutti i devoti, "nudi" e non, accompagnano il santo in processione.
Il rito religioso è celebrato nella Chiesa di S. Maria Assunta, con la partecipazione delle autorità locali che continuano un'antica tradizione, consegnare le chiavi della città al Santo, come segno di devozione. A mezzogiorno inizia la processione per le vie della città, la vara viene portata solo dagli uomini "nudi", questo è si un privilegio, ma anche un dovere di penitenza. La prima tappa della processione è nelle acque gelide del fiume Calagni, dove i devoti invocano la grazia, questo rito è il complesso rapporto che la città di Tortorici ha coi fiumi: i fiumi hanno da sempre fornito acqua per il cibo, per coltivare i campi, ma spesso i fiumi a Tortorici hanno anche distrutto o danneggiato il territorio, quindi ... il Santo viene così invocato per scongiurare danni. Questa epidemia fece diffondere una grande devozione per San Sebastiano poiché il santo, legato a una colonna e colpito dalle frecce, veniva considerato il simbolo dell’umanità trafitta dagli strali della peste.
il 20 gennaio 2018, a Tortorici, i festeggiamenti in onore di San Sebastiano, sono stati eseguiti in forma mesta e ridotta, poichè tutta la comunità si è stretta attorno al dolore della famiglia di Chiara, una giovanissima ragazza di 20 anni che ha perso la vita in un incidente automobilistico, l'automobile sulla quale Chiara viaggiava è precipitata dentro l'alveo del Fiume Grande che attraversa Tortorici.

Ciceruacchio / Martire del piombo austriaco (Martyr of Austrian bullets) was an Italian historical film, dealing with victims of the Austrian occupation of Italy, and intended to raise anti-Austrians sentiment during the First World War (when the Northwest part of Italy - the present province of Friuli - was still under Austrian occupation). Angelo Brunetti, named Ciceruacchio, a Roman trader in cheese and wine, was much beloved by the Roman people, e.g. for his behavior during the 1837 cholera plague. In a public performance in 1846 he thanked the pope Pius IX for releasing political prisoners, while in 1847 he pressed Pius IX to continue his policy of reform. During the 1848 revolution, he joined the Roman Republican forces and helped the Romans in the siege by the French. But when they were defeated in 1849, he fled with his sons Lorenzo and Luigi and hoped with Garibaldi and allies to liberate Venice from the Austrians. Instead, they were betrayed by locals at Cesenatico and then arrested and executed by the Austrians on 10 August 1849.
Emilio Ghione’s film was scripted by Emilio Calve. The plot mostly follows history. The papal police suspects Brunetti, aka Ciceruacchio (meaning little fat man), but when Pius IX hears about Brunetti's bravery during a flood, he gives him a special audience. Brunetti henceforth considers the pope Rome's savior, while his republican friends think otherwise. When the pope flees to Gaeta during the revolution, leaving the city to foreign oppressors, Cicueracchio becomes Rome's new leader, but he has to flee after the last stronghold, Trastevere, is conquered. He is betrayed and arrested in Rovigo, and executed with his son Luigi (Alberto Collo). NB Ghione suggests Brunetti was killed with only his eldest son, while in reality both sons and also several allies of Brunetti were killed with them.
While reputed stage actor Gastone Monaldi, famous for his dialect acting, played the lead, his partner Fernanda Battiferri played Annetta. Ida Carloni Talli played, as usual, the mother, Brunetti’s mother in this case. Alberto Collo played the son, even if he he had the same age as Monaldi. The film passed censorship 22 June 1915, while a week earlier, on 18 June 1915, the film had its first night in Rome. Emilio Ghione, who had been a regular Cines, Celio, and Caesar actor in Rome, had starting film directing from 1914. While for a long time he was most remembered for his Za-la-Mort crime films at Tiber Film, in which he had the lead too, at Tiber he also made various - commissioned - historical propaganda films during the First World War, such as Oberdan (1915) starring Alberto Collo, and Ciceruacchio.
The story of Ciceruacchio was afterwards again filmed in In nome del popolo sovrano (1990) by Luigi Magni, in which Nino Manfredi performed Brunetti. Ciceruacchio was also recreated in Camicie rosse/ Anita Garibaldi (1952) by Goffredo Alesandrini and Francesco Rosi, and returned in the recent mini-series Anita Garibaldi (2012).

I devoti vanno "nudi" al Santo come segno di penitenza, essere "nudi" si intende in questo caso, essere vestiti di bianco, gli uomini indossano una camicia, dei pantaloni con un fazzoletto piegato a triangolo che cinge la vita e camminano scalzi; anche le donne camminano a piedi nudi o indossano solo calze bianche, indossano camicie e gonne bianch ed un fazzoletto copre la testa: tutti i devoti, "nudi" e non, accompagnano il santo in processione.
Il rito religioso è celebrato nella Chiesa di S. Maria Assunta, con la partecipazione delle autorità locali che continuano un'antica tradizione, consegnare le chiavi della città al Santo, come segno di devozione. A mezzogiorno inizia la processione per le vie della città, la vara viene portata solo dagli uomini "nudi", questo è si un privilegio, ma anche un dovere di penitenza. La prima tappa della processione è nelle acque gelide del fiume Calagni, dove i devoti invocano la grazia, questo rito è il complesso rapporto che la città di Tortorici ha coi fiumi: i fiumi hanno da sempre fornito acqua per il cibo, per coltivare i campi, ma spesso i fiumi a Tortorici hanno anche distrutto o danneggiato il territorio, quindi ... il Santo viene così invocato per scongiurare danni. Dopo la sosta nel fiume Calagni, la processione riprende per le vie della città.
In Sicilia le tracce più antiche del culto di San Sebastiano riportano al 1347, quando, in occasione della terribile epidemia di peste bubbonica che colpì tutta l’Europa, il santo fu proclamato compatrono e protettore di Palermo.
Questa epidemia fece diffondere una grande devozione per San Sebastiano poiché il santo, legato a una colonna e colpito dalle frecce, veniva considerato il simbolo dell’umanità trafitta dagli strali della peste.
il 20 gennaio 2018, a Tortorici, i festeggiamenti in onore di San Sebastiano, sono stati eseguiti in forma mesta e ridotta, poichè tutta la comunità si è stretta attorno al dolore della famiglia di Chiara, una giovanissima ragazza di 20 anni che ha perso la vita in un incidente automobilistico, l'automobile sulla quale Chiara viaggiava è precipitata dentro l'alveo del Fiume Grande che attraversa Tortorici.

This is a report on the feast of St. Sebastian that was celebrated in the Sicilian town of Tortorici; the feast was held on January 20 of last year 2018. The devotees men go "naked" to the Holy as a sign of penance, they are dressed in white with a shirt and trousers, an handkerchief folded in a triangle shape on the pant and they walk barefoot; women, even they walk barefoot or wearing only white stockings, wearing white shirts and skirts, an handkerchief covering her head: all devotees, "naked" and not, accompany the saint in procession.
The religious rite is celebrated in the Church of St. Maria Assunta , with the participation of local authorities who continue an ancient tradition, and that is to deliver the keys of the city, as a sign of devotion to the Holy . At noon starts the procession through the streets of the City. The artistic "float" is carried only by the "naked" , this is a privilege but also a duty of penance . The first stage of the procession is in the River Calagni where devotees invoking the grace , this rite is the complex relationship of the city of Tortorici with the rivers: the rivers have always provided water for the food, for irrigation fields, but often the rivers have destroyed or damaged the territory, so... the Holy is invoked to ward off damage . After the stop in the River Calagni, the procession resumes through the streets of the town.
In Sicily, the oldest traces of the cult of San Sebastiano date back to 1347, when, on the occasion of the terrible epidemic of bubonic plague that hit all of Europe, the saint was proclaimed patron and protector of Palermo.
This epidemic spread a great devotion to St. Sebastian because the saint, tied to a column and hit by arrows, was considered the symbol of humanity pierced by the plague's arrows.

Yesterday, renowned Italian film director and screenwriter Francesco Rosi (Naples, November 15, 1922 - Rome, January 10, 2015) passed away. Rosi, who started out in Italian neorealism, was one of the most important politicised post-neorealist Italian filmmakers of the 1960s and 1970s. For over two decades he was the critical consciousness of Italy.
Francesco Rosi started as assistant-director for e.g. Luchino Visconti (La Terra Trema, 1948; Bellissima, 1951; Senso, 1954) and as screenwriter. In 1952 he took over direction of the film Camicie Rosse when director Goffredo Allessandri was disabled after a car accident. His breakthrough came in 1958 with La sfida (The Challenge), a film about Camorra boss Pasquale Simonetti (José Suarez) and Pupetta Maresca (Rossana Schiaffino). The film shocked for its allusion to the mafia controlling the government. Also in his later films such as Salvatore Giuliano (1962), Le mani sulla città (Hands Over the City, 1963), Il caso Mattei (The Mattei Affair, 1972), Tre fratelli (Three Brothers, 1981), and Cristo si è fermato a Eboli (Christ Stopped at Eboli, 1979), based on Carlo Levi’s autobiographical novel, Rosi fiercely protested against a number of abuses in Italian society, either in the past or in contemporary times, or among Italian immigrants in Germany (I magliari/The Magliari, 1959). This social criticism was also present in his masterpiece Cadaveri eccellenti (1976), an adaptation of the novel Il contesto by Leonardo Sciascia. All this forced him to depart temporarily to Spain.
In the 1970s, Gian Maria Volonté was his regular actor, from the First World War drama Uomini contro (1970). Although Rosi filmed in unconventional locations and sometimes with unknown actors, he also made more conventional cinema such as the opera film Carmen (1984) with Placido Domingo and the Gabriel Garcia Marquez adaptation Cronaca di una morte annunciata (Chronicle of a Death Foretold, 1987) with, again, Volonté, plus Alain Delon and Ornella Muti. Later followed the thriller Dimenticare Palermo (The Palermo Connection, 1990), starring James Belushi and based on the Prix Goncourt winning novel by Edmonde Charles-Roux. Finally Rosi filmed the historical drama La Tregua (The Truce, 1997, based on the eponymous autobiographical by Primo Levi, told by Holocaust survivors returning from Auschwitz, and with John Turturro as Levi himself.
In 1962 Salvatore Giuliano won a Silver Bear for Best Director. Le mani sulla città won a Golden Lion in 1963. Il caso Mattei received in 1972 a Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. Tre fratelli was nominated in 1982 for an Oscar. At the 2008 Berlin Film Festival Rosi was honored with a honorary Golden Bear. In 2010 Rosi won a lifetime Golden Leopard at the festival of Locarno and in 2012 a lifetime Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
