Our annual father's day photography adventure had to be postponed. I had job come up last minute so we did our trip a week later. We took Dad's brand new hybrid Lincoln to the Outer Banks in North Carolina. From the mainland you can pretty much drive down to Ocracoke. They have national parks, Wright Brothers stuff and lighthouses. There are also wild horses. It was easy to find a few of them but once we rented a Jeep we could drive down the beach and it seemed like they were everywhere.
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse has got to be the most famous lighthouse on the Outer Banks, maybe, I do not really have any data to back that up. However, it is really recognizable with the spiral pattern and classic lighthouse look. They actually moved this one inland because the spot it was on was going to erode away. We managed to shoot it at midday and sunset. Nearby there is a pond full of turtles, and there is an impression from a lizard in the sidewalk which are both also cool.

One of the many adventures you can have is riding the ferry. We needed to take a boat so that we could get from Hatteras to Ocracoke. It seems weird to take a floating parking lot from place to place. I heard, if you keep going south you can take another ferry then drive some more and take a boat, (I assume without your car.) and go to an island with more horses that does not have houses and as many people around.

Why so many lighthouses you may wonder. Well lighthouses are one of the things the Outer Banks has got so you just go and shoot those while you are there. I am sure these have been shot at every time of day from every angle but I still tried to do something a little different. They are pretty interesting. They all have different patterns so ships at sea could tell which one they were looking at. Each one has sort of a historical area around it with the old lighthouse keepers house and stuff. Currituck Beach Lighthouse had a whole colonial kind of area around it. Bodie Lighthouse was on a salt marsh.

These are the first wild horses we spotted. They were actually right next to the beach entrance. You are allowed to drive a four wheel drive vehicle on the beach but they do not have any parking for anybody else. They have a park ranger kind of guy on an ATV there to turn you around really quick. I hopped out of the car while Dad went to drive around. First I was just shooting some pelicans trying to figure out how we could get down the beach and find some horses. I asked the ATV ranger if there was a place to rent anything like he had. He told me there was a jeep dealership that did rentals. On top of that he had just herded a few horses over the sand dune right behind me. I shot those horses till Dad got back but we decided we needed to go get one of those jeeps.

29 Mar 1973, Hanoi, North Vietnam --- HANOI: Unidentified group of U.S. POWs turn their backs on a North Vietnamese film cameraman in their cells at the Nga Tu So prison camp in Hanoi. All of the men were released late March 29th and have arrived safely at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines. In refusing to have his photograph taken in the cell, one POW said, "We object to pictures because this not the way we lived." --- Image by © Bettmann/CORBIS
