Happy Macro Mondays, HMM !!

“What is that?"

Vintage calipers. They are exactly three inches long. HMM!

I've seen this TurboS before, but never at night. The lighting was usable so I tried and liked how it came out.

Blacked out 360 in Del Mar. Just one of those days.

A micrometer, sometimes known as a micrometer screw gauge (MSG), is a device incorporating a calibrated screw for accurate measurement of the size of components. It. is widely used in mechanical engineering, machining, metrology as well as most mechanical trades, along with other dimensional instruments such as dial, vernier, and digital calipers.

What accelerates 0-60 in ~2 seconds, has around 1000hp, and has a price starting at over a lofty 1/2 million? A Ferrari SF90, that's what! Get out your checkbooks, gents!

Not all plug-in hybrids are built for efficiency; some are built for speed. The Ferrari SF90 is one such counterexample, combining a twin-turbo V-8 with a trio of electric motors and a 6.5-kWh battery pack to spit out 986 horsepower in standard trim. The SF90XX models, laser-focused on race-track driving, get an extra 30 horsepower—as if they needed it—awarding the SF90 lineup entry in the four-digit power club. The massive power output goes to all four wheels with the front tires driven electrically. Double-X versions also have a stripped-down interior and other changes in the pursuit of all-out lap time. The standard SF90 is now available only as a convertible called the Spider, with a luxurious cabin lined in leather and featuring an unconventional screen-and-control layout. The XX can still be had in Stradale coupe form or as a Spider. Whichever version of the SF90 you fancy in your wild imaginings, know that the powertrain, aerodynamics, and chassis wizardry come together to make one of the best mid-engine sports cars in the world—Ferrari or otherwise.

The standard SF90 Spider comes packed with enough amenities to make it a satisfying pick, especially if you plan to keep to the street more than a race track. If you want to give this Ferrari a more customized appearance, you can select from a host of upholstery choices and paint hues. There are several different wheel designs, and the list of available upgrades includes carbon-fiber components, a titanium exhaust, a digital rearview mirror, and brake calipers in a variety of colors. Which one to buy? There’s no wrong answer.

With the SF90, power comes from a massively powerful V-8 and three electric motors. The twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 generates a mighty 769 horsepower on its own, and the trio of electric motors provides an additional 217 horsepower. In the end, the gas/electric powertrain generates a net output of 986 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. Upgrading to the SF90 XX unlocks 30 more horsepower for a total of 1016 hp and adds a feature Ferrari calls Extra Boost, which temporarily increases power output to help regain speed when exiting a corner. Power is sent to all four wheels, making this the first mid-engine Ferrari with all-wheel drive. An eight-speed automatic transmission oversees the proceedings. Different driving modes allow you to tailor the car's handling to suit your preferences. Use the mode selector to dial up EV Only, Hybrid, Performance, or, last but not least, Qualify—a setting that allows you to fully exploit the car's performance capabilities.

Car and Driver

With two Le Mans wins, dozens of grand prix victories, five Targa Florios, a Manufacturers’ Championship, and the build of some of the pre-war period’s most celebrated sports and luxury automobiles to its credit, it is no wonder that the Bugatti marque is regularly honored at world-class concours d’elegance and museums. The Molsheim, France-based brand is so esteemed that a commemoration of its 100th anniversary was never in doubt. So when the occasion arrived in 2009, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance duly pronounced Bugatti’s centenary as one of the event’s guiding themes.

This opportunity was not lost on Bugatti Automobiles SaS, the modern successor to Ettore Bugatti’s original Alsatian concern. The company’s signature product, the 1,001-horsepower Veyron 16.4, had spent years in careful development by the VW Group’s specialized engineers, and was received with justifiable acclaim by journalists and enthusiasts alike upon its 2005 introduction, redefining the benchmark for the modern hypercar in the process.

The Veyron was capable of accelerating from 0 to 62 mph in just 2.46 seconds, en route to a top speed just over 408 km/h (nearly 254 mph). Built around a magnificent mid-mounted, quad-turbocharged 8.0-liter W-16 engine with four valves per cylinder and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, it astonished the world with its surefootedness even at the most extreme speeds, enabled by a full-time Haldex all-wheel-drive system. The stopping power was stunning, as the Veyron was anchored by massive carbon-ceramic disc brakes with 15.7-inch discs and eight-piston, four-pad calipers up front, while 15-inch discs with six-piston, two-pad calipers were mounted at the rear. The alloy wheels, respectively 20 and 21 inches at the front and rear, were shod with special Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 PAX run-flat tires engineered specifically for the Veyron.

Three different drive modes governed the dizzying array of technology: a Normal mode, at which the ride height was 4.9 inches; a Handling mode that deployed the rear spoiler and lowered ride height to 3.15 inches; and a special, key-activated High-Speed mode that dropped ride height to 2.56 inches in front and 2.75 at the rear, while changing the spoiler position. Even the car’s ancillary systems, including no fewer than 10 radiators, were marvels of automotive engineering conceived to perform under the most demanding circumstances.

All of this was encased within an intricately hand-crafted structure, actually shorter in overall length than a modern Porsche 911, though riding on a longer 106.7-inch wheelbase, while being noticeably lower and wider than the benchmark German sports car of the day. It was instantly and definitively recognizable as the pinnacle product that it aspired to be—the modern Bugatti, a sporting speed machine that looked and performed like absolutely nothing else on the road.

Macro Mondays - Tool.

Slide Rule and calipers. Speed light with blue gel - reflector bowl and white diffusion sock center left. Speed light with red gel bounced off black background. Speed light with snoot, above right.

I used this slide rule throughout my college days. I was forced to give in and purchase a scientific calculator (a sizable investment in those days) for a chemistry course in quantitative analysis, which required accuracy to four significant digits.

2.75 inches in greatest dimension.

Decided to present myself a challenge....find an item for each letter of the alphabet that could be of photographic interest, and constrain the search to inside the house. Admittedly, some stretching was inevitable, but it was really quite enjoyable.

Just look at it!!! And for those of you wondering, Gideon (GHG) and I were standing a few from each other hence the similar shots that we have.

Contender for Macro Mondays theme 'Egg' and 52 in 2024 Challenge category 31. Egg.

Please spare a thought for the poor guy behind the camera, who was forced to eat a whole bag of Mini Eggs to produce this image.

Stack of 50

This particular egg was 2 1/8 inches before it was broken, and it's turned so it's not completely side on, the image is exactly 3 in wide at the point the egg touches the ground, according to my calipers anyway 😊

I love those silver brake calipers!

“Science deals with the world which it perceives but, seeking more and more to penetrate the veil of naïve perception, progresses only towards the goal of nothing, because it still does not accept in practice (whatever it may admit theoretically) that the mind first creates what it perceives as objects, including the instruments which Science uses for that very penetration. It insists on dealing with ‘data,’ but there shall no data be given, save the bare percept. The rest is imagination. Only by imagination therefore can the world be known. And what is needed is, not only that larger and larger telescopes and more and more sensitive calipers should be constructed, but that the human mind should become increasingly aware of its own creative activity.”

To match this week’s theme, “Details From My Neighborhood,” for the group Macro Mondays.

This is a micro (macro) of a Virginia Dayflower, a ubiquitous little plant in my neighborhood. The diameter of the open flower measured petal tip to petal tip is only 5/16”, and the little bits inside are so small that I don’t think I can measure them even with my electronic calipers.

The coolest thing about this car was the calipers!

In addition to numerous carbon parts, the standard ceramic high-performance composite brake system with black painted brake calipers and the AMG bucket seats in visible carbon contribute to the weight saving. The light AMG Performance forged wheels in 5-twin-spoke design are exclusively painted in matt titanium gray and finished with a high-sheen rim flange.

The appearance of the Rolls-Royce crawler associated with a French designer and inventor Adolf Kegress, who at the beginning of the XX century worked at the court of Russian Emperor Nicholas II. In 1906 Kegress became head of the Imperial garage. Later he became a personal mechanic and driver of the Emperor. By the way, the February revolution and collapse of the Empire, French designer managed to survive without any losses. He passed the Imperial garage to the new government and with his family happily moved to Finland. More interesting details gives Paul Blake at his comment below

A male Black-chinned Hummingbird and banding equipment. We use calipers for measuring the bill and wing and a ruler for the tail feathers. The pliers hold the bands that are stored on the big pins. We use a magnifying light to check for grooving on the bill (if there is grooving it's a hatch-year bird). The pin is to open the band to put in the pliers. And, everything gets recorded and sent to the Banding Lab.

For my ongoing bird-a-day project for 2017. Thanks all!

This image is the result of trying to produce an abstract image with red. I thought the other image fit the bill but I was asked for something a little more straight forward. So much for that idea, but I did shoot the sky and red thing (Ok strawberry cut in half) with the calipers on Saturday so that should count for something.

Believe this is one of only 5 made, a Ferrari with custom features by Talos company . The paint work alone was apparently over £25,000 and not a wrap !! Modified V12 engine, custom brake calipers -ceramic no doubt?
