7 tonnes of soil ordered (& compost for top dressing too) - i am avoiding doing the calculation of how many wheelbarrows to push that this represents ..better just to start and then pace myself

Taken with a Bronica SQ Ai, 80mm lens and bellows offering almost 2x magnification. The area of bread crust in the picture is just under 3cm x 3xm. Ilford FP4+. The AE Prism Finder made exposure calculation easy!

 

Only had one chance for this shot with pink sky, luckily my calculations were accurate. Single exposure, only processing lens correction and custom white balance.

Precariously perched on rocks out in the lake while taking this shot, tree branches sticking into my head and back, I was doing a quick calculation of the cost of replacing all my gear if I fell in. In the end it was worth it ...

Fear of numbers but can also refer to the fear of math, numerals, certain numbers, calculations, and/or calculus. I went on GoogleEarth, and drew a line along the length of Pier60. It sits at a compass bearing of 279.5 degrees. Then, I found an online sun angle tracker, and found that the sun sets at a compass bearing of 279.5 degrees on April 10, 2015.

So, I went to the pier on that day, and it worked. The photo would have been better if a cloud wasn't obscuring the horizon right as the sun set.

 

According to my calculations, this should happen again on September 2, 2015.

After three long months in the making its finally here. I honestly don't have much I care to say about it, so yeah.

 

I also can't give you a count of studs, but it was just slightly over 4 feet long, so you can do the calculations yourself.

 

...and also, finally crossing off building a SHIP from my lego bucket list. My first and most likely my last. (any more 100+ ships I can assure you will be completely unintentional)

 

Most importantly, I owe a huge thank you to all the people who encouraged me to actually follow through and finish this build and gave me support along the way, and especially to all my bros for building a sick nasty display to feature it on, without which I probably would have procrastinated indefinitely. most of all too Evan (Lego Junkie) for photographing it at Brickfair and helping edit these pics, because without him this wouldn't have gotten posted until much later in the month/year, if at all for that matter. Mount Kangchenjunga or Khangchendzonga with an elevation of 8,586 meter (28,169 feet) is the third highest mountain of the world. It is called Five Treasures of Snow after its five high peaks.The Tibetan words are: Kang (Snow) chen (Big) dzö (Treasury) nga (Five).

  

The main peak of Khangchendzonga is the second highest mountain in Nepal after Mount Everest. Three of the five peaks – Main, Central and South – are on the border between North Sikkim and Nepal.Two peaks are in the Taplejung District, Nepal.

  

Until 1852, Khangchendzonga was assumed to be the highest mountain in the world, but calculations based on various readings and measurements made by the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India in 1849 came to the conclusion that Mount Everest, known as Peak XV at the time, was the highest. Allowing for further verification of all calculations, it was officially announced in 1856 that Khangchendzonga is the third highest mountain.

  

It is widely regarded as the guardian deity of Sikkim.

the full moon has come to mean that, work permitting, i'll be out chasing a moon shot. yesterday, i met up with mr.G, anthony ayiomamitis and chris kotsiopoulos at [surprise, surprise] sounion. anthony's calculations were exact!

 

i shot my image with a canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM lens and a canon EF 2x II extender.

 

i don't have video capabilities on my 40D, but i did make a video sequence of a series of stills, in an attempt to convey the feeling at the first moments of moonrise.

It was one of the early morning full moon views with this bridge tower at Treasure Island. The sky was so clear but the calculation was a little bit off that Moon did not cross the tower. Not that easy. I still have much more to learn about this type moon photo thing.

The wreck of Endurance was discovered on 5 March 5th 2022. In a press release, that they had successfully found the wreck in the Weddell Sea at 9,869 ft deep, 4.0 mi; 3.5 nmi south of Worsley's original location calculation. Mensun Bound, director of exploration on the expedition, said that Worsley's navigational skills had helped the expedition find the wreck: his historic "detailed records were invaluable". Additionally, sea ice, which covers the Weddell Sea year-round and usually makes underwater exploration nearly impossible due to its thickness, was recorded as being at the lowest levels around Antarctica since space satellite records began in the 1970's. The discoverers on board the research vessel S. A. Agulhas II said that the wreck was in remarkably good condition, and they had filmed and photographed it extensively, including ultra-high-definition 3D scanning. The name Endurance on the stern remains clearly legible. In line with the team's promise, they did not salvage any part of the wreck or its contents, as the ship is now a protected historic site and monument under the Antarctic Treaty System.

Had an awesome time shooting with Charlie Widdis this morning (or was it last night? Who remembers...). There are definitely times when shooting at night where it just feels safer to shoot in pairs. Although this location looks fairly innocuous the breakwater here in Rockland is almost a mile long and even on a fairly calm night like this it can feel a bit adventurous in the dark. My calculations were a bit off and the Milky Way didn't appear where I expected it to so adjustments in compositions had to be made.

 

Some technical info for those so inclined. 5 shot composite. One for the sky at 2500 iso, f2.8 and about 26 seconds or so. 4 separate focus stacked shots for the foreground at 800 iso and about 4.5 minutes apiece also at f2.8. The ambient light from Rockland Harbor kind of clashed with the color temperature of the beacon thus the yellow highlights on the breakwater. May or may not revisit this location for another try but I have some more lights to check off the list before I do!

Stop Press. After the initial upload I found a fascinating resource, International Slide Rule Museum (ISRM). There I learned four things that amazed me.

 

1) 2022 is the 400th anniversary of the invention of the slide rule by William Oughtred!

 

2) ISRM indicates that 1901-1902 Nestler models were stamped on the slide cavity with just the manufacturer's initials, AN, plus a design patent number. My grandfather's rule here clearly shows that. So it is now identified as a Nestler, and about 120 year old. It might be quite rare. It is longer than the maker's 10" rules, and shorter than their 20" models, yet it has the same graduation density as the larger ones. I haven't yet seen any the same. (See also last paragraph below, and images in comment thread.)

 

3) Various web sites claim that the German rocket scientist Wernher von Braun acquired in the 1930s two Nestler slide rules, the only ones he ever used, including while heading the NASA Moon landing program. Albert Einstein is also claimed to have used these rules. They must have had a stellar reputation!

 

4) In my youth I'd believed that Faber-Castell was the only brand, yet one of the favourites of the ISRM was made in my home town of Melbourne, and I had never heard of the maker!

On acquiring one of the first scientific calculators available, someone in my wife's family ceremoniously flung his slide rule into the rubbish bin. But I was sad to see them slip ignominiously, from ubiquity in technical computation settings, into museum status. (My wife recovered that rule and it is in this image.)

 

I remember when, as a schoolboy, I unwrapped my first model, and, using only its own scales and cursor, immediately fell to verifying a hunch that its principle was based on logarithms. "Duh!", anyone with a maths background might say. But at the time, I felt that I had cracked a code and let myself in on an esoteric language that was openly inscribed in runes on this magic wand, yet which had been hiding from me in plain sight all along.

 

I have lost that one, which had scales on both sides, a Faber-Castell Darmstadt 2/82 -- but the one nearest the top of the frame here is a grander version of that. This latter was the most sophisticated I ever owned (with a useful πX scale), and it was made right at the end of the ready availability of these devices locally. But I hardly ever used this replacement because I only bought it in case I'd never get another chance. To me, they were and still are strangely beautiful so-called "objects of virtu". They are the very physical manifestation of that wonderful abstraction of the human mind, logarithms. (Something remarkable and elegant is vital to the practicality of a slide rule, although it can be conceptualised in other ways. Since the full scale length represents log(10), any internal position X must divide the scale length in the ratio log(X):log(10/X). That enables both multiplication and division to be performed with either left or rightward slide shifts as appropriate, and so allow a single decade to suffice -- but at the cost of requiring users to keep track of the decade they are notionally in.)

 

The rule lying diagonally above the others here was the first I ever knew, as a small intrigued boy, long before I understood what it was for. It has lost its (glass) cursor, while some of the scales have peeled away from the wooden substrate. Because the material looked and flexed like the struts in my mother's corsets, I always assumed it was whalebone! The device had belonged to my maternal grandfather, who had been a civil engineer in Austria. He might well have used it in calculations required for a bridge he built over the River Inn (see a very early comment below). My mother and I tried to see that in 1996, but it had already been consigned to a rubbish bin for bridges... Tempus fugit.

This remarkable lightning was taken 30 May 2020 about 20 minutes after sunset from about 14 miles away. It moves from right to left, never reaching the ground.

 

My calculations indicate that this lightning was about 4 miles across.

My Last shot before packing and heading to my car, was pretty hard for this one, I guessed the shutter speed, because it was too dark and I don't wanna do the calculation, well it turns out not too bad, I pulled up the exposure a little bit in PP. Have a nice weekend guys!

Its really hard to compose a shot when you are 1/4 mile away. My sun location calculations were spot on however my picture execution wasn't. The sun was in the position that my sun calc app had calculated which was pretty much splitting the tracks as the Duchess exited Clerk Tunnel. As she rounded the curve to Parsons tunnel the side of the loco would be bathed in sunshine. I had to compensate for the lag in shutter release and actual actuation as well as avoiding trackside obstacles, plus there is no continuous shot facility on my drone. It was a one shot deal. I fired the trigger too soon, I should have waited another 20 yds but I bottled it.

So....here she is working the 1Z34 0723 WKG PLM.

Discovering a new technique.

 

-Using Neutral density filter of 10 steps (ND1000)

-Focus Manually to the horizon while maintaining the calculation hyperfocal from green rocks with an open aperture.

-ISO Minimum.

-On The standard measure of adjustment to the shutter (In That Case 8 seconds) add 3 steps (Bulb with timer).

 

And the result is a long exposure on exposed above the horizon for a total white but with perfect focus on the rocks. Creating a dramatic effect on the photo.

 

After the development with Lightroom with simple basic settings you get a picture of great intensity.

 

As usual all the new techniques are discovered by chance and I did not go looking for exposure. Even at first I was about to discard the photo, but fortunately I noticed the new effect achieved only with photographic technique, no additional sowtware.

 

If someone wants a further explanation, simply ask.

Descubriendo una nueva tecnica.

 

-Uso de filtro de densidad neutra de 10 pasos ( ND1000)

-Enfoque manual al horizonte pero manteniendo el calculo de la hiperfocal a partir de las rocas verdes con un diafragma abierto.

-ISO minimo.

-Sobre la medida estandard de ajuste para el obturador (in that case 8 segundos) añadir 3 pasos (Bulb con cronometrador).

 

Y el resultado es una larga exposicion sobre expuesta sobre el horizonte hasta conseguir un blanco total pero con un perfecto enfoque sobre las rocas. Creando un efecto espectacular sobre la foto.

 

Despues en el revelado con Lightroom con los simples ajustes basicos se consigue una foto de gran intensidad.

 

Como casi siempre todos las nuevas tecnicas se descubren por casualidad y yo no iba buscando una sobre exposicion. Incluso en un primer momento estuve a punto de descartar la foto, pero afortunadamente me di cuenta del nuevo efecto conseguido unicamente con tecnica fotografica, sin sowtware adicional.

That can’t be right. My incredulity palpable. On checking the calculation I had to face facts, time waits for noone. 😂

It had been a while since my last visit to this popular spot on the outskirts of Westbury; by my calculations it must had been in the years prior to Covid. After spending quite some time in and around Bath, I was about to start the journey home when I spotted this early running empty stone was on the move, allowing me to take a slight detour to capture it. Freightliner 66622 approaches Fairwood Junction with the 230 minute (almost 4 hour) early 6V28 13.06 West Drayton-Whatley Quarry via Swindon. The Westbury White Horse, fresh from refurbishment, stands promiently on the hillside.

So I did the calculations to work out that 4M11 would still be on at Woodend. I hadn’t factored in late running as it’s normally pretty solid, but train crew issues led to a late start and then a couple of loopings to allow passenger trains to get ahead meant it was approaching 1925 when it came round the corner. The expected white & green combo had been switched to a green and white combo, 16 & 11 seen cruising alongside the River Clyde. Luckily the light was strong.

Again I played with my 1.4/55 Revuenon, trying to imitate the bokeh of a mirror lens.

Calculational the "aperture" only absorbs half an f-stop but oddly enough the viewfinder looks much darker. Therefore it's very difficult to focus correctly. Also the camera's lightmeter seems to see the picture much darker and tries to overexposure it. I have no idea about the reason...

 

PS.

The disc is inside the lens, next to the iris aperture.

Seems that in rural America, land and property owners are doing a simple calculation: a. save the old beasts [barns], which would be romantic, or b. let them crumble and put up steel framed ones [practical].

Kosso Eloul (1920-1995) was born at Mourom, U.S.S.R in 1920 and raised in Israel. In 1938, Eloul studied and began his artistic training at the Tel Aviv, a year later continued at the Art Institute of Chicago. There he studied under Frank Lloyd Wright and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy in the 1940s.

 

He served in World War II and the War of Independence, resuming artistic practices in 1948.

 

In 1959, Eloul represented Israel at the 29th Venice Biennale, where a passion for international sculpture conferences began; he showed at the 1st Sculpture Symposium in Yugoslavia in 1961 and at the Negev Desert in 1962. At the end of the 1960’s, Eloul settled in Toronto, showing at the 10th Sculpture Conference

in 1978.

 

The process behind these sculptures rested in precise calculations and maquettes. These calculations and maquettes were sent to a fabrication plant in Toronto, where these large sculptures were created. Eloul’s sculptures are minimalistic and generally created through stainless steel or aluminum. It is common to experience several dominating geometric forms perched precariously on top of each other, testing the laws of gravity. These rectangular sculptures are site specific, maintained in many public spaces throughout Canada.

 

Eloul described: “I think that balancing, or the balancing act or the dynamics off this is just very expressive of our time, our personal predicament, our day and age, everything. The potential movement of those shapes is very exciting.”

A visit to Swindon works on 17th June 1977 gave me the opportunity to take some shots around the yards where Westerns were awaiting cutting up. Very sad but also very exciting for a young lad.

My notes from the day are not as accurate as they could be but carefull calculation leads me to deduce that the front two are 1065 and 1071.

I was aiming to capture the largest full moon of the year rising over the local hillside windmill, but as usual my elevation calculations were way out and it passed too high, though that didn’t really matter due to the amount of cloud cover. As I had the camera all ready to go I took a couple of snaps of the moon with the clouds partly obscuring it, and was drawn to the semi-abstract nature of this one, the clouds resembling turbulent waves.

To anyone who may read this, I have been trying to contact the Australian US embassy to try and get refugee status, but I have not been able to get though, because my phones and internet are not working properly. This is genuine plea for help. Could anyone who gets this message pass on this to the a US embassy anywhere on the planet.

There are so many shots of a morning eastbound on my "someday" list that a lot of calculations had to be made on the fly as I followed L516 Saturday morning. Since it rarely happens even the light angles can be a little surprising, on top of that I was trying to work in the fall color. The trees were underwhelming in places and tough to work into the shot in others. Sometimes you just have to find the right one.

 

Just west of Emerald the train works upgrade directly into the rising sun as it crosses 260th St. The climb out of the Willow River watershed toward the drainage of Sandy Creek isn't the steepest on the line but just enough to be a help when chasing. Back in the coal and coke train days this hill would get you an extra set or two of photos if you played your cards right. Just don't get too comfortable once on the other side it's track speed for a long ways.

Moehne lake (Germany) - Moehne dam

 

The Möhne Reservoir, or Moehne Reservoir, is an artificial lake in North Rhine-Westphalia, some 45 km east of Dortmund, Germany. The lake is formed by the damming of two rivers, Möhne and Heve, and with its four basins stores as much as 135 million cubic metres of water.

 

In 1904 calculations about the future demand for water for people and industry in the growing Ruhr-area determined that the existing storage volume of 32.4 million m³ in dams of the Ruhr river system needed tripling. Thus, on 28 November 1904, the general assembly of the Ruhrtalsperreverein decided to construct additional dams. During 1908 to 1913 they built the Möhnetalsperre at a cost of 23.5 million marks.

 

When opened, the dam was the largest dam in Europe. 140 homesteads with 700 people had to move. It was built to help control floods, regulate water levels on the Ruhr river downstream, and generate hydropower. Today, the lake is also a tourist attraction.

 

The dam (51.489307°N 8.058772°E) was breached by RAF Lancaster Bombers ("The Dambusters") during Operation Chastise on the night of 16–17 May 1943, together with the Edersee dam in northern Hesse. Bouncing bombs had been constructed which were able to skip over the protective nets that hung in the water. A huge hole of 77 m by 22 m was blown into the dam. The resulting huge floodwave killed at least 1,579 people, 1,026 of them foreign forced labourers held in camps downriver. The small city of Neheim-Hüsten was particularly hard-hit with over 800 victims, among them at least 526 victims in a camp for Russian women held for forced labour.

 

Though the Organisation Todt quickly repaired the dams through the labor of 7,000 men taken from the construction of the Atlantic Wall, the impact of the raid on German industry in the Ruhr valley and on the civil population was significant. "Industry was brought to a standstill", due to the "electrical installations being soaked and muddied."

 

Three other reservoirs were still intact, though the largest, the Sorpe Dam, had a hole above the water line. Another destroyed dam, the Edersee Dam, "had nothing to do with the supply of water to the Ruhr." The Mohne Dam was repaired by 23 September 1943, in time to collect water for needs the following summer, when the British failed to follow up with additional raids to hamper reconstruction.

Der Möhnesee ist ein Stausee an der Möhne. Er liegt im Gemeindegebiet von Möhnesee im nordrhein-westfälischen Kreis Soest. Bei Stauziel hat die Hauptsperre 10,37 Quadratkilometer Wasseroberfläche und einen Speicherraum von 126,05 Millionen Kubikmetern; mit den zwei größten Vorsperren und einem Ausgleichsbecken sind es 134,5 Millionen Kubikmeter. Das Wasser wird durch eine 40,3 Meter hohe und 650 Meter lange Staumauer aufgestaut.

 

Der Möhnesee liegt am Nordwestrand des Naturparks Arnsberger Wald. Südlich entlang dem zur Westfälischen Bucht überleitenden Haarstrang zieht er sich in Ost-West-Richtung durch die nach ihm benannte Gemeinde Möhnesee und staut, neben kleineren Bächen, die Möhne und die Heve.

 

Die Aufstandsfläche der Talsperre befindet sich im oberen Bereich der Auflockerungszone der oberkarbonischen Arnsberg-Schichten, einer Wechsellagerung von intensiv gefalteten Sandsteinen, Grauwacken und Tonsteinen. Durch eine intensive tektonische Beanspruchung während der variszischen Gebirgsbildung sind die Gesteine intensiv gefaltet worden. Der Bereich des Möhnetals ist zudem durch das Vorhandensein von großen Störungszonen gekennzeichnet. Nördlich der Talsperre werden die gefalteten paläozoischen Schichten diskordant von Ablagerungen der Münsterländer Kreide überlagert. Die oberkreidezeitliche Abfolge fällt flach in nördliche Richtungen ein und beginnt mit einem glaukonithaltigem Grünsand der Essen-Grünsand-Formation aus dem Cenomanium und wird von Plänerkalken der Erwitte-Formation des Coniaciums und Turoniums und den Mergeln der Büren-Formation sowie der Pläner der Oerlinghausen-Formation des Turoniums überlagert. Die geologische Grenze zwischen paläozoischen und kreidezeitlichen Schichten bildet auch die geographische und naturräumliche Grenze zwischen Arnsberger Wald (Sauerland) und Haarstrang.

 

Die Möhnetalsperre dient der Niedrigwasseraufhöhung, dem Hochwasserschutz und der Stromerzeugung aus Wasserkraft. Vorrangiges Ziel ist die Niedrigwasseraufhöhung der Ruhr, in die das Wasser der Talsperre über den Unterlauf der Möhne und den Zusammenfluss im Arnsberger Stadtteil Neheim gelangt. Die Regulation des Wasserstands der Ruhr garantiert eine gleichmäßige Versorgung des Ruhrgebiets mit Roh- und Brauchwasser. Eigentümer und Betreiber der Talsperre ist der Ruhrverband.

 

Der Möhnesee, der nebst der Rurtalsperre und dem Biggesee zu den größten Stauseen in Nordrhein-Westfalen zählt, wie auch der angrenzende Arnsberger Wald sind vor allem für Menschen aus dem Ruhrgebiet bedeutende Naherholungsgebiete. Daher gibt es ein umfangreiches wassersportliches Angebot sowie jährlich einen großen Triathlonwettbewerb am Möhnesee. Möglich sind hier Grillen auf dem See, Segeln, Motorbootfahren mit Elektromotor und Tauchen bis zu Tiefen von 25 Metern. Entlang des Sees führt auf beiden Seiten der Möhnetalradweg von Brilon nach Neheim.

 

Hauptsperre

 

Der Stau- oder Speicherraum der Hauptsperre kann 126,05 Millionen m³ Wasser aufnehmen. Der Möhnesee ist mit seinen vier Abschnitten über zehn Kilometer lang und rund 10,37 km² groß. Bei Vollstau liegt seine tiefste Stelle mit 36 Metern beim Linkturm, der nach dem Erbauer Ernst Link benannt wurde.

 

Das Absperrbauwerk der Talsperre, das als Gewichtsstaumauer erbaut wurde, besteht aus Bruchsteinmauerwerk, ist nach dem Intze-Prinzip gebaut und hat eine Kronenlänge von 650 m.

 

Um bei Hochwasser einen Überlauf zu ermöglichen sind in der Mauerkrone, unterhalb der Fahrbahn, 105 Öffnungen eingelassen. Ein Teil der Energie des herabströmenden Wassers wird auf der Luftseite der Staumauer durch die hervorstehenden Bruchsteinquader bereits umgewandelt. Um die Mauer zu schonen und wegen der Energieerzeugung wird ein Überlaufen über die Öffnungen der Hochwasserentlastung möglichst vermieden. Zuletzt lief die Talsperre im August 2007 über, infolge extremer Niederschläge im Einzugsgebiet – zum Beispiel in Warstein am 9. August 2007 in drei Stunden 58,5 mm. Das vorletzte Überlauf-Ereignis war 1984.

 

Direkt unterhalb der Staumauer befindet sich ein Ausgleichsbecken (Ausgleichsweiher), das als Tosbecken dient. Der Stauraum ist 0,66 Millionen m³ groß und das Stauziel liegt auf 183,65 m ü. NHN.

 

Das Wasserkraftwerk hat eine Ausbauleistung von 7,04 MW; seine mittlere Gesamtjahresenergieerzeugung liegt bei 12,9 Millionen kWh.

 

Berechnungen des zukünftigen Bedarfs an Trink- und Brauchwasser für das wachsende Ruhrgebiet im Jahre 1904 hatten ergeben, dass zu den bereits vorhandenen Talsperren im Flusssystem der Ruhr mit einem Stauvolumen von 32,4 Millionen m³ die dreifache Menge erforderlich wäre, nämlich etwa 100 Millionen m³ Stauraum. Bis zum Jahr 1925 schätzte man sogar ein Anwachsen auf fast 200 Millionen m³. Daher wurde von der Generalversammlung des Ruhrtalsperrenvereins am 28. November 1904 eine Satzungsänderung zum Bau eigener Talsperren beschlossen. Am 22. Mai 1905 wurde zum ersten Mal über den Plan gesprochen, im Möhnetal eine große Talsperre zu bauen. Die Möhnetalsperre wurde daraufhin in den Jahren 1908 bis 1912 nach Plänen des Regierungsbaumeisters Ernst Link und nach einem Entwurf des Kölner Architekten Franz Brantzky für die Staumauer mit einem Kostenaufwand von 23,5 Millionen Mark erbaut und am 12. Juli 1913 vom Ruhrtalsperrenverein eingeweiht. Im Jahr der Einweihung war die Talsperre die größte Stauanlage in Europa. Der ehemalige Ort Kettlersteich versank vollkommen im Wasser. Das Dorf Delecke (Alt-Delecke) wurde ebenfalls zum größten Teil geflutet. Dem See mussten 140 Gehöfte mit 700 Menschen weichen.

 

Die Möhnetalsperre wurde im Zweiten Weltkrieg durch einen Operation Chastise (deutsch Züchtigung) genannten britischen Bombenangriff, geleitet durch Wing Commander Guy Gibson, in der Nacht vom 16. auf den 17. Mai 1943 stark beschädigt.

 

Um die Abwehranlagen am Stausee zu umgehen, wurden eigens zu diesem Zweck konstruierte über das Wasser hüpfende Rollbomben von nachtflugtauglichen Langstreckenbombern des Typs Avro Lancaster von der No. 617 Squadron abgeworfen. Diese Rollbomben hüpften bei flachem Auftrittswinkel aufgrund ihrer schnellen Eigendrehung über das Wasser und sprangen über die Torpedoabfangnetze hinweg. Anschließend prallten sie gegen die Staumauer, wobei ihr Drall dafür sorgte, dass sie rasch zum Mauersohlengrund sanken, wo sie dann in einer Tiefe von 10 bis 15 Metern explodierten. Eine von mehreren in kurzer Folge abgeworfenen Bomben erreichte ihr Ziel und führte zur Mauerbeschädigung. Der Stauraum war zum Zeitpunkt des Bombenangriffs Mai 1943 voll gefüllt. Es entstand so zunächst ein kleiner Riss, der sich durch den Druck der ausströmenden Wassermassen schnell erweiterte und zuletzt eine trapezförmige Lücke mit 77 m Breite und 22 m Tiefe ergab.

 

Aufgrund der hierdurch entstandenen Flutwelle, die sich über die Möhne bis weit ins Ruhrtal ergoss, kamen verschiedenen Angaben zufolge mindestens 1284 oder sogar über 1600 Menschen ums Leben. Der von der Abwurfstelle am weitesten entfernte Todesfall in Zusammenhang mit der Flutwelle ereignete sich in Essen-Steele, über 100 Kilometer jenseits der Staumauer. Ein Mahnmal am früheren Kloster Himmelpforten erinnert heute an die Toten der Katastrophe. Neheim, heute ein Stadtteil von Arnsberg, wurde besonders schwer getroffen; die Flutwelle war dort über 12 Meter hoch. Die meisten Menschen kamen im Neheimer Zwangsarbeiterlager Möhnewiesen ums Leben. In Neheim gibt es vor der St. Johannes-Kirche eine weitere Gedenkstätte.

 

Zweck dieses Angriffs, bei dem gleichzeitig auch die Edertalsperre und der Sorpesee angegriffen wurden, war mittelbar die Beeinträchtigung der Rüstungsindustrie im Ruhrgebiet; der Sorpedamm wurde aufgrund seiner speziellen Bauweise aus Beton mit Erd- und Steinüberschüttung kaum beschädigt.

 

Der Angriff auf die Staumauer wurde 1954 in dem britischen Spielfilm Mai '43 – Die Zerstörung der Talsperren (The Dam Busters) von Michael Anderson nachgezeichnet.

 

Der Wiederaufbau der Staumauer unter einem Aufgebot von mehreren tausend Arbeitskräften rund um die Uhr und unter Verwendung der ursprünglichen Baumaterialien wurde, trotz der damals sehr angespannten allgemeinen Material- und Kräftelage, unmittelbar nach der starken Beschädigung eingeleitet und konnte schon am 3. Oktober 1943 mit dem Auftragen der Fahrbahndecke auf der Dammkrone abgeschlossen werden. Der schnelle Fortgang der Arbeiten wurde schließlich auch durch die Nazi-Propaganda ausgenutzt, um der kriegsmüden Bevölkerung zumindest kleine Erfolge vorzuführen. Der Einfluss des Angriffes auf die Kriegswirtschaft des Ruhrgebietes war nicht so nachhaltig ausgefallen, wie von den Alliierten ursprünglich erhofft. Sie griffen die Großbaustelle bzw. die dann fertiggestellte Staumauer bis Kriegsende nicht mehr an.

 

Von 1972 bis 1979 fand eine umfassende Sanierung der Möhnetalsperre statt. Durch Sprengungen legte man entlang der Gründungssohle der Staumauer einen Kontrollgang an, von dem aus die Mauer verpresst und mit Drainagebohrungen versehen wurde.

 

Auch auf der freien Seite der Staumauer nagte am Mauerwerk der Zahn der Zeit. Durch die Risse drang Wasser ins Mauerwerk, einsetzender Frost beschädigte Steine. In den entstandenen Hohlräumen sammelten sich Samen an, keimten und bildeten Baum- und Strauchwerk aus, welches mit seinen Wurzeln die Mauer weiter schädigte. Von 1992 bis 2000 wurden umfassende Sanierungsarbeiten an der etwa 2,5 Hektar umfassenden Luftseite vorgenommen. Da Stein- und Fugensanierungen nur im Sommerhalbjahr durchgeführt werden konnten zog sich die Sanierung über acht Jahre.

 

Wie bei vielen anderen Stauseen finden sich unterhalb der Wasseroberfläche Relikte aus vergangenen Tagen. Im Spätsommer 2003 musste wegen Reparaturarbeiten an den Absperrschiebern des Hevevorbeckens der Wasserstand so weit abgesenkt werden, bis das Hevebecken vollständig entleert war. Zum Vorschein kam die alte Brücke mit der über ihr verlaufenden Straße.

 

Die Talsperrenmauer ist als Baudenkmal in die Denkmalliste der Gemeinde Möhnesee eingetragen.

 

Anlässlich des 100. Jahrestages der Vollendung der Talsperre im Jahre 1912 gab die Deutsche Post AG mit dem Erstausgabetag 4. April 2013 ein Sonderpostwertzeichen im Wert von 90 Eurocent mit Sonderstempeln und dem Text 100 Jahre Möhnetalsperre heraus. Der Entwurf stammt von den Grafikern Gerda M. und Horst F. Neumann aus Wuppertal.

 

2013 erscheint der Roman Nachtauge von Titus Müller, der die Geschichte des Ortes Neheim und die Flutkatastrophe aus der Perspektive historischer bzw. fiktiver Figuren realistisch, eindrucksvoll zum Leben erweckt und durch Lesungen vor Ort würdigt.

 

Unter dem Motto Jahrhundertleuchten wurden zum Jubiläum einen Monat lang rund um den Ausgleichsweiher eine Vielzahl von Lichtinstallationen ausgestellt. Zentrales Element war eine Videoinstallation, die auf 160 × 40 Meter der Bruchsteinoberfläche der Staumauer zwischen den Türmen mittels Dia- und Videoprojektoren 100 Jahre deutsche Geschichte mit dem Staudamm im Mittelpunkt zusammenfasste. Sie wurde von Britta und Wolfgang Flammersfeld erstellt.

Pencil Sharpener Rant - Inkling on Moleskine, again

 

Yet another week passed seeing nonsense going on in certain poor company-wide execution. Poor logic, calculation and consideration (no those are not algorithms, at all) executed in the name of efficiency and ideal automation. Simply said, replacing human decision with formulae requires deep understanding and serious simulations *before* execution. Now is the stage when a lot more human intervention is required to fix certain poor logics.

 

Yes I'm a sharpener mining my my own business shaping the future in my own ways. Forcing some nonsense into me and I'll keep cranking until raging fume comes out because I refuse to play nice to nonsense. The day when I need protection is the day I lost my value as a sharpener, as blades are not meant to be protected, they are to shape.

 

Ok, enough self proclaimed heroism. This is just a quick sketch using Inkling on my Moleskine, graphically rant about my recent encounter with sick things. The drawing was exported to Photoshop using Sketch Manager and colored in a sloppy way. Enough to calm me down, call it a therapy.

 

Wacom Hong Kong is going to have a press conference on 28th Sep 2011 to announce Inkling officially. Since I'm a big fan of Inkling and still sort of a Moleskine fanatic while luckily being the stationery buyer of a retail chain, I'm arranging a promotion in October: Buy Inkling and get 20% off for Moleskine Sketchbook (large or small). This simulation of store display was done in 30 minutes while attending a presentation meeting. I'm very happy to be able to get support from both Wacom and Moleskine for such campaign in such a short time. It won't be a big hit, but at least it benefits certain stationery lovers who happen to love both Inkling and Moleskine. Let's see how it will turn out.

Although a bit slow, Brian's natural flare for the slide rule enabled him to perform calculations perfectly with a grace and elegance that were the envy of his fellow science classmates using their electronic calculators.

I recall getting a slide rule when I went to university decades ago - but never learned to use it as that was around the time the first pocket scientific calculators became available. They were quite expensive at the time, so my boyfriend and I split the cost (I think it was a Texas Instrument SR-10) and just hoped we wouldn't both need it for an exam at the same time.

 

No snails or slide rules were harmed in the making of this photograph.
