This is my latest sock knitting project.
As I wasn't sure whether I'd have enough yarn left to get socks as long as I wanted, I decided to knit these from the toe up (or rather from the base of the toe - I'll go back and knit the toe (and the heel) later using the same contrast yarn I've used for the top).
The body of the sock is knitted in a 4x2 rib pattern with left-hand cable twists on the knitted stitches (crossing in front of the work every 4th round), worked on 4mm dpns. The sole of the foot (visible in this picture) is worked in stocking stitch, to make it more comfortable to wear (amd a bit quicker to knit, although that's an incidental bonus).
The top is worked in 1x1 rib, using 3.5mm dpns to compensate for the slightly thicker yarn.
In the picture you can see the scrap yarn used for the provisional cast-on, which is about to be removed so that the toe can be knitted. Also visible is the scrap yarn used to mark the place where the heel will go. The heel will follow the same pattern of decreases as the toe, and is of the type known variously as an afterthought heel or a peasant heel.
Some mixed impressions, not posted previously, from our trip to Brazil last year. Come to think about it, I'm sure I still have more material. So there is a bit from our visit to Paraty near Rio. The rest is from in and around São Paulo...

This extender cable is perfect for locating your motor/gearboxes wherever you need. At 10" in length, you no longer need to have your motors located close to H-bridges, logic boards, etc. These cables have male & female connectors and can withstand temperatures between -25° and 85° celsius.
Buttons matched yarn colour - round metal buttons with a centre of the exact green as the yarn colour.
Cable Cottage(?), Firemore
Described by some locals as having been the Transatlantic cable terminal but SCOTICE came ashore in Gairloch.
This would seem to be the terminal of the 1872 cable to Stornoway.

The locally produced wool was slightly itchy, so I knit in a cashmere/merino liner (left over from Halfdome hats)
I made this hat last night using a pattern found on Ravelry. I did struggle a bit with the brim... I'm not sure if the pattern was unclear or if I read it wrong... but it was a bit traumatic... Once I had finished the whole hat, the brim was a bit wonky... but never mind.
The pattern called for a yarn that doesn't seem to be available in Australia, so I ended up using a strand of Bendigo Woollen Mills Rustic 8ply and a strand of Bendigo Woollen Mills Alpaca 8ply together. So it's quite a chunky knit. I plan on making the hat again, but with some modifications so that the brim application is much easier and won't be wonky (hopefully!). Also, it turned out a smidgen too small, so I will try to make it a touch bigger next time.
Cable skiing is water-skiing where the skier is not pulled by a boat but by an overhead cable which is suspended 8-12 meters above water surface by specifically designed pylons.
