Detail of a neo-medieval window in the north transept at Salle, celebrating historical personages associated with the church, and executed in a very conscious attempt to mimic the 15th century style of original glass here by Herbert Bryans c1912.

SS Peter & Paul at Salle is church I've known about for years, having read the words of many who have waxed lyrical about this grand medieval edifice standing proud in near splendid isolation. The testimonies invariably praise this church as one of the highlights of Norfolk, if not one of the finest parish churches in the entire country; in my mind it thus had much to live up to now that I was finally to see it for myself.

Salle church lives up to all these superlatives and more, it is a magnificent building, first sight of it being something like finding a cathedral in the middle of a rural field! It is late medieval at its best, all of a piece 15th century architecture with many original furnishings to match. My initial impression of the interior was of a large, almost barn-like space filled with antique furniture, a place where the more one looks the more interest one finds in every corner, this being a church that requires very thorough exploration to see all it has to offer.

I fell in love with this church and could easily have spent much longer here (though thankfully didn't as this would have compromised seeing the other gems our generous hosts also had planned for us for the rest of the day!). Salle is a churchcrawler's dream and shouldn't be missed, it is happily normally open and welcoming to visitors.

A generic tin toilet powder box made by the American Stopper Co, Brooklyn NY, c1912. 49mm (approx 1 15/16inches) in diameter.

Born at Minesing Jan.2, 1846 and died at Toronto Feb. 12, 1925. He kept a diary from the day he married Eliza Ann Standen ( Dec. 25, 1872 ) which is now in the archives of Simcoe county.

Mitchell House was designed by the architect Harry Norris and built in 1936-37. It was built for Thomas Mitchell & Co, a leading and long-established local firm of brushware manufacturers. The company had owned land in Lonsdale Street since the 1890s and acquired the adjacent site of the Commonwealth Hotel on the corner of Elizabeth and Lonsdale Streets in c1912. In 1936 the company commissioned Norris, then Melbourne's leading designer of modern, large-scale commercial and retail buildings, to design a new ten-storey building, rising to the then height limit of 132 ft (40 metres). Only six storeys were built, with three storeys proposed for a future stage. There were elevated links to connect the building to the company's original premises on the other side of Mitchell's Lane, whose facade would be remodelled at a later date. The contract price for the building was £25,000 and it was built by Hansen & Yuncken in only five months. Mitchells had their showroom on the second floor of the new building, and the other floors and the shops on the ground floor were tenanted.

Memorial Window to Hannah Lambert (1830-1911).

By James Powell & Sons, Whitefriars, c1912.

James Powell & Sons, situated on the site of the former Whitefriars monastery, between the Thames and Fleet Street, was producing mainly flint glass when it was bought in 1834 by James Powell, a London wine merchant. On his death the firm passed to his three sons Arthur, Nathaniel and James Cotton Powell, who in 1844 established a stained glass department. The latter benefitted from the scientific researches of Charles Winston, a lawyer by profession, who had dedicated himself to the study of medieval stained glass. It had made him aware of the shortcomings of the glass available to contemporary artists, this being often thin and garish in colour. In 1847 he encouraged experiments aimed at rediscovering the chemical components of medieval glass and persuaded the firm of James Powell & Sons to produce 'antique' glass to his recipes. It was mainly due to this collaboration that the firm was to become one of the most important studios and glass manufacturers of the Victorian period.

Wicken Fen was once part of a peat digging industry. Windpumps such as this were used to drain turf pits and fields.

This windpump was built c1912 but had fallen into disrepair so was moved here at Sedge Fen in 1956 and was then restored. It’s now owned by the National Trust. It’s the last surviving wooden windpump on the Fens.

North window under the steeple by Burlison & Grylls, c1912.

Rugby's parish church of St Andrew is an imposing landmark in the town centre, and highly unusual in possessing two towers, one 15th century with battlements at the west end, and the tapering steeple by William Butterfield at the north east corner, part of his rebuilding of the ancient church. (unusual as this two-towered church is, the town's catholic church also evolved in a similar way, thus both major churches share the effect of asymmetrical towers, a unique situation in Britain).

The arrangement was even more impressive until 1983 when the massive nearby 1870s George Gilbert Scott church of the Holy Trinity, technically sharing the same churchyard, was tragically demolished.

The medieval St Andrew's had already been much altered, having begun life as a village church it was gradually expanded to serve the growing town. The nave had been enlarged in the 1800s and by the time of Butterfield's further expansion of the building in 1877-85 only the west tower and the north nave arcade survived of the medieval building. These were retained, the old nave effectively becoming the north aisle (and outer north aisle!) of a much larger nave built to the south, complete with south aisle and a lofty chancel.

The interior is therefore every bit as eccentric as the exterior, with Butterfield's characteristic use of coloured stonework and a sanctuary rich in marble finishes. The most dramatic feature is the chancel arch surmounted by a cross adorned with geometric patterning and supported by richly carved corbels. The font too betray's Butterfield's love of contrasting coloured marbles.

The stained glass in the main east and west windows (along with the north and south windows of the sanctuary) is by Clayton & Bell. The remainder, in the aisles and the large Baptism window under the north steeple (difficult to see since conversion to a vestry) is all the work of Burlison & Grylls of London, with their characteristic neo-Flemish fine drawing in subdued tones.

The church is usually open and welcoming during the day with a small cafe set up at the west end. I am especially grateful to Helen Bryant on my latest visit for giving me access to the vestries to photograph the glass there.

Both Holtzapffel & Haymarket neighbours ZigZag launched shaped jigsaws in 1910-1912 - including both selling the identical looking Bluebird design. There must have been some industrial espionage going on.

David presented two examples of Zig-Zag’s own earliest version, which was called the “New Figure Zig-Zag”. See Jigasaurus:

Left: ZigZag 150pc The Lovers, solid wood, c1912 8.3x14.5in.

Stunning example beautifully outline-cut around the subjects and including several drop-outs. The backing board is of 1/4(6mm) thick mahogany. A message on the box-base reads To Mother & Father-Easter 1912. The box address on this example is: Carlton Street, LONDON SW.

Right: ZigZag 150pc Quite English, solid wood, c1911.

Very well made solid mahogany puzzle, accurately outline cut around the main subject area. The address on the box for this example is 8, Norris Street London SW and the puzzle is understood to have featured in a c1911 company catalogue.

Later several other British manufacturers of the era tried some shaped jigsaws, including AVN Jones, Studio, Frederick Warne, particularly with their Beatrix Potter puzzles, and Chad Valley.

Framed in closed studding with middle rail, and moulded bressumer over ground floor, and 2 intermediate rails in the upper section, with some cusped quatrefoil panelling in the 2 left-hand bays. Central 4-centred arched door, flanked by full-height canted bays with 3-light wood mullioned and transomed windows on each floor, added c1912. Axial stack marks the junction of the 2 possible phases of construction. Lower 2-storey addition to the left, and long wing to the right, largely brick but incorporating some timber-framed construction. INTERIOR: early C17 staircase with splat balusters and moulded rail. HISTORICAL NOTE: the house was originally built on Dogpole, and was moved to its present position c1702 by the Earl of Bradford, its original site being developed with what is now the Guildhall (qv). Rabbi with Cat.

Natalya Goncharova (1881-1962).

Oil on canvas, c1912.

For many years this painting was known as 'Monk with Cat', though the figure is in fact a Rabbi. The two men carrying sacks in the background are Jews fleeing a pogrom. The Hand of God can be seen in the top-left corner, blessing the Rabbi, who may be stroking the cat for the last time before he too departs. The picture is indebted to Russian icons. We can read an analogy between the Rabbi and cat and the Virgin and Child. The painting delivers a poignant message about compassion, suffering and religious intolerance.

Embargoed to 0001 Wednesday September 22.. BLACK AND WHITE ONLY.File photo c1912 of the RMS Titanic. A novelist whose grandfather sailed on the Titanic claims her new book reveals the truth behind the sinking of the ship. Louise Patten said Charles Lightoller, who was Second Officer on board the ship which sank when it hit an iceberg on its maiden voyage in 1912, said an order to steer the ship away from the danger was misunderstood. PRESS ASSOCIATION Photo. Issue date: Tuesday September 21, 2010. She said that at the time, different steering systems were used for steam ships and sailing ships and her grandfather maintained this had caused confusion when an order was given to turn the ship to starboard. Mrs Patten said: 'Crucially, the two steering systems were the complete opposite of one another. So a command to turn Ôhard a-starboard' meant turn the wheel right under one system and left under the other. See PA story ARTS Titanic. Photo credit should read: PA Wire
