North nave window by Heaton, Butler & Bayne, c1911, depicting the Holy Family presided over by an angel.
St Paul's church at Woodhouse Eaves dates back to 1837 when it was built to the designs of William Railton and subsequently altered with transept extensions in 1880. It is a substantial 19th century church with a west tower and a wide nave flanked by double-transepts and a narrower chancel beyond, all in a pseudo-Early-English style with lancet windows throughout.
The inside is light and spacious and feels a well loved and maintained church. There is a good mixture of Victorian glass in many of the windows, but the most rewarding here are the smaller pair of Arts & Crafts windows in the chancel by Theodora Salusbury.
Woodhouse Eaves church is probably normally kept locked like most in the area outside of service times, but is worth seeing inside if at all possible.

This is probably Anna Gama, aged 27, who in 1911 was living at St Colum, Cedar Road, Sutton. Anna was Swiss German and stated that 'she was a worker in a lady's house'. It is possible that she was a companion. It is likely that she left the UK at the start of the war, or earlier, as there is no further record of her.

Exterior view of the front of the Lord Melbourne Hotel, Melbourne Street, North Adelaide. A sign indicates the proprietor was A.H. Pryor, who held the position from February 1911 to May 1912
Originally on the opposite (northern) side of Melbourne Street to its present location, the Lord Melbourne Inn was established in 1851. Changing to the Lord Melbourne Hotel, it moved to the southern side in 1869.
THE WALKING CRAZE CHALLENGE MATCH AT NORTH ADELAIDE.
A 10-mile walking match was held at North Adelaide on Saturday afternoon, when some of the old enthusiasm of that almost defunct sport was revived. Not since the craze about 10 years ago has walking held any attraction for athletes. Last June Bill Turner, of the Postal Department, thought he could walk, and he challenged S. Barber, who proved he knew more. The outcome was last Saturday's match, when Barber met B. Baker, both of the Postal Department. The course was from Macnamara's Lord Melbourne Hotel along the tram track past Buckingham Arms Hotel, over the hill to the North-east road, along there to a point a mile beyond Windsor Hotel, and back.
The match was for a side stake put up by supporters, and a small purse by Mr. Mcnamara. There was a good crowd at the starting point and along the route, many following on bicycles and in vehicles. The contestants started off at an even pace, taking a shade more than 10 minutes over the first mile; then Barber stretched out in earnest and took the lead. About three miles out Barber was about a furlong in the lead, and continued with useful advantage till the turning point, when he was 130 yards in the lead and going -easy. The time to that point was 43 minutes. Baker is said to have remarked here that Barber, could not keep up the hot pace and he would "come back to me." Baker made a game showing going back, and is credited with having shortened the gap in the last mile. Barber was timed by the referee from the six-mile to the four, which he did in 13 minutes. His time for the distance was 1h. 34s. The referee was Mr. J. G. Matthews, who also acted as timekeeper.

Three windows in the Curzon Chapel feature saints named Maria (or Mary). They were inspired by Lady Curzon’s Christian name.
Frederick Charles Eden was an architect and a pupil of William Butterfield and of George Frederick Bodley. He often designed the glass and other fittings for his own buildings and in 1910 began making his own windows.

Mabel, Oregon, c1911
This is a view looking north along what is now Marcola road just north of Shotgun creek, but at that time was called the Oshkosh road.
To the left side of the road can be seen, in bottom to top order, the Mabel school house, the Mohawk Valley church and just to the left of the bend in the road is the Rural Supply Company store run by Mrs. Gerking. Jacob Bahr and Philip Workman both served as ministers in the Mohawk Valley church according to Polley. The Mohawk Valley church was built on 2 acres purchased from Andrew Workman and it was built in 1894. Its denominational affiliation was the German Baptist Church of the Brethren also called the Dunkards
In the foreground center can be seen the Coast Range Lumber co. cookhouse. The trees around the cookhouse still stand in Mabel today.
In the bottom right corner is the Church of the Brethren, also known as the Dunkard church. This property was also purchased from Andrew Workman and was built in 1901 and the congregation moved from the original building across the road to this one. After this move to their new building the old building still served as a Methodist church.
In the center right, you can see two rows of company housing built by the Coast Range Lumber Co. for their employess. As these were larger homes they were most likely used by men with families or management personnel. Today a road travels right down the center of these rows and takes you to the Grange building.
As there are no power poles visitble, is why I dated this photo to 1911. The housing was built in 1911 and electricity was added in 1912 from the Mill power house.

Since 1972 the Stained Glass Museum has been housed in the nave triforium (originally on the north side, it was later transferred to the south where it currently remains). This is the only collection in the country solely devoted to the medium and is a great ambassador for it, with fine pieces covering a range of styles and illustrating the development of the art through the various backlit panels on show in the gallery.

This window is one of many in a church whose history goes back to the early to mid -1800s in SouthEastern Wisconsin. St. John the Baptist is a Catholic (obviously) church once had a mixed congregation of Irish and Germans. The Irish lived on the northern end of what is now Hwy D, eventually becoming the Racine side of the Racine / Kenosha Country line. South of the Irish, the eventual county line, and in the future Kenosha County the Germans established their settlement.
The Germans who were well known for their renowned quality building, craftsmanship, wood work, and art work built what was then St. Patrick's. (Apparently, the Irish had some influence, or at least contributed the name for the church.) A large dome (which has a more specific name that slips my mind right now), was built around a wood frame and withstood some fifty years of Wisconsin's winters.
At some point during the dome's fifty years, the area where the Irish and German settlements were located was split in two by a county line. The Irish, now in Racine , claimed the church as their own. This did not sit well with the Germans who by all rights "owned" the church (at least the building).
Then one dark, cold night the Germans snuck across the county line, from Kenosha to Racine, and literally STOLE the church! I don't know how a village of Wisconsin Germans managed to lift and move an entire church (close to a mile in distance) in the middle of the night without waking the Irish community, but they did it. The church was "relocated" in Kenosha County with the Germans, and renamed St. John the Baptist. The dome's wood frame eventually needed to be replaced. Around the same time, the Germans had artists in Germany carving statues for around the altar and Chicago located German artists skilled in stained glass creating these windows. According to the unofficial church historian, these windows are the closest thing you will ever come to Tiffany. My photos cannot do these windows justice. I have seen Tiffany glass, although not of this size, and I still find myself more impressed by these German made pieces of stained glass. They are phenominal.
Note: The tag, c.1912, is the date of the final & complete restoration and dedication.

The observer had the dubious honour of standing up to fire the machine gun bacwards while in flight!! F.E = Farman Experimental.
