C'est un volcan de tuf encore aux trois-quarts noyé, dont la partie supérieure émerge faiblement du lac. Son aspect est celui d'un atoll ouvert au Nord-Est.

Les deux cornes, orientales et occidentales, n'ont guère plus de 1500m d'altitude maximum, soient une quarantaine de mètres au dessus du niveau actuel du lac Kivu (1463m). Elles sont séparées au Sud Ouest par une ensellure qui est presque au ras de l'eau.
