The story of Ugandans Lawrence Kaala and Jimmy Sserwadda ended in an almost storybook fashion—with a wedding. The two men wed in Sweden in late January, and are believed to be the first Ugandan couple to be legally married.

They had been in a long-term relationship until Sserwadda was forced to flee the country in 2008 after he was arrested and beaten for "promoting homosexuality."

"I didn't tell Lawrence. I know he would have insisted on coming with and that would have put our lives at risk. So I left him behind," he told The Local, a Swedish paper published in English.

Kaala didn't know what had happened to Sserwadda until 2011, when he had also gone into exile and by chance wound up in Sweden. Then Kaala came across a profile of Sserwadda published by a Swedish gay right's organization.

The two reunited, and planned to marry. But days before the wedding, they learned that Kaala's asylum petition had been denied. Activists said Sweden Migration Board doubted Kaala's story of persecution. His case was emblematic of a larger lack of sensitivity and understanding of the situation facing LGBT people in countries like Uganda.

Last week, the Migration Board reversed its decision, granting Kaala a residency permit. News reports say the board was swayed by the fact that Kaala had recieved death threats in Uganda after news of their wedding reached the country.

They were married in a Swedish church with more then 100 guests in attendance, including Sweden's Minister for European Union Affairs, Birgitta Ohlsson.

Nov. 7, 2019 - Hired as editor-in-chief in 2012, Ben Smith did for BuzzFeed—then best known for its lists, quizzes and viral videos—what few in the industry get to do: he built a news division from scratch. Although BuzzFeed’s entry into serious journalism was met with some skepticism, Smith grew its newsroom into a now-established force that has both garnered awards and generated controversy. In a conversation with Jayme Poisson, host of the CBC News podcast Front Burner, Smith discusses what’s next for BuzzFeed News.

The problem presented by Mr Jones and his associates in The Clash is a dilemma over the best way to avoid a difficult situation, or 'trouble'.

The Clash have done well at identifying two courses of action-staying or going-and have reflected on the level of trouble each would cause, but repeatedly fail to decide on either over the three minutes ten seconds they allow themselves to make a decision.

Thankfully, a simple mathematical model helps us solve the trouble they're facing. Setting after all. out their issue, The Clash state that there will be trouble if they go, but if they stay it will occur at twice that rate.

Defining trouble as t, we know that for any given value of trouble: t(go) = x, but, t(stay) = 2x.

After this, it's simple maths to say that for any level of trouble above zero-in which situation The Clash could do whatever they liked - they should clearly go, for a maximum of half as much trouble versus the alternative. We have also demonstrated that paying attention to algebra in school can prove useful in adult life

However, we should stress the above analysis is all done under the hypothesis that Mr Jones and co. wish to minimize the trouble they face, which may not be the case. They are, after all, named The Clash.

WHEN WILL I, WILL I BE FAMOUS?

Bros, however, treat fame as a certainty; it is after all 'when will I be famous?' not simply 'will I be famous?', which possibly refers to Andy Warhol's assertion that everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes.

However, this gets difficult: if everyone is to be famous for fifteen minutes, we would need 199,771 years just to get through everyone alive right now. Or, to allow each person on the planet their allotted fifteen minutes in their lifetime, each person would have to share their fifteen minutes of fame with 2,496 others. That may not make you feel all that famous.

I spent a day walking around London’s East End around Hackney, Shoreditch, Dalston and Bethnal Green with an incredible photographer friend Alan Schaller looking out for inspiration, oddities and niceties. Alan is a rising star in street photography. Thought relatively a newcomer to the field, he has already been featured and published by the likes of Time Out, Buzzfeed, The Independent and many more! His black & white work is truly outstanding and I really urge you to check it out!

Alan and I stumbled upon a strange sight in London – a farm! The Hackney City Farm is a fantastic project that for 20 years has allowed city kids to experience the farm environment and see up close in person the kind of animals that a child might not actually see for many years if living in a metropolis like London. It’s a very cool place and it was definitely a highlight of the day.

Wheat and rye with a handful of flax/linden seed; risen with my sourdough starter. Whole grain loaves don't rise as well/high as white ones, but they have much more nutrition. They are also very dense and somewhat hard to slice, at least mine were, but the flavor is exceptionally good. I experimented with the method described by Michael Pollan in his new book, COOKED: The Natural History of Transformation. He suggests mixing much of the flour and water separately from the leaven to start--letting both sit at room temperature overnight. The flour/water begins to change on its own, and to bubble slightly, even before being mixed with the leaven. It did make for an interesting dough. My loaves remained dense--yet delicious.

Blogged by Buzzfeed. . . on a strange food-quiz page. They gave me click-through credit. Thanx, Buzzfeed, for doing it right.

This is my pastiche of what a Buzzfeed aimed at Librarians might look like.
