Button Business
March 2011
Medium: Badges and people, As large as participants make it.
Description: Button Business, is a social scultpure. This work was generated out a frustration from attending private views and not being able to meet anyone new. This work invites people attending a private view, or later on in the gallery, to wear a badge/s that best describe their role in the artworld. Functioning as an ice-breaker tool, the project allowed strangers to approach one another and ask about about their badge selection and then perhaps discuss more. Polaroids were taken of those participating at the PV. The badges ranged from ARTIST ( red) FRIEND OF ARTIST ( pink) SEEKING ARTIST ( light blue) CRITIC ( yellow) CURATOR ( dark green) ACADEMIC ( blue) COLLECTOR ( lime green) CREATIVE INDUSTRY PROFESSIONAL ( orange) and HERE FOR THE BEER ( gray). As viewers/participants left, they took the badge to serve as a point of anecdote for the project and perhaps prompt future discussions.

Here are the 6 buttons i made for the swap. I used a light cotton fabric (from a quilters fat quarter) and painted it using watered down acrylic. Then i glued 2 layers of felt together using PVA glue. I embroidered the buttons and finally glued it all together using PVA and added the glitter glue.
