Berlin, Ontario, at one time was known as the "Button Capitol of Canada" due to the large number of button factories located here. Shells were used to make mother-of-pearl buttons, first by drilling out a blank from the shell, then turning it on a lathe and finally drilling the thread holes. The amount of detritus was probably enormous, and fragments can still be found on the surface in various parts of Kitchener-Waterloo today. These shells likely date from around 1875.
