I call this one the 'Butt Strad' because of its prominent posterior (see the side view of it!). It's another late 1800's Schönbach violin that I completely rebuilt. It had a severe crack on the back that required patching, and I re-did the graduations on the top because it was one of the 'beaver chewed' variety. Now that it's completely restored I'm amazed at how good it actually sounds, because it's not exactly the most beautifully built violin! I'm keeping the unflattering name, though! ;)
Have you ever needed Butt Drugs more than I have here? Corydon is a colorful place, and sometimes they name things in a funny manner. Unfortunately they were closed and I had to go to CVS for Bag Balm.
The actual butt on this DT is the solid line and the claimed butt length is the dashed. Quite a bit different!
marking the start and end of the butt tapers. the lathe is just a good way to hold things steady, it has a 7/8" bar chucked with a ball bearing sitting in a detent on the end, underneath the dial indicator.
To visit the Coyote Buttes South is to step into an otherworldly landscape of textures, shapes colours. A visual assault.
Only 20 people per day are issued permits for this location on the Paria Plateau in the Vemillion Cliffs National Monument.
We had some snow, some rain and a little bit of sun and blue sky. Sorry - not enough superalatives to describe what millions of geology have done.
We toured the area with our guide, Dallas, from Paria Outfitters - superb, attentive and seemed to be having as much fun as us!
