Coyote Buttes is a section of the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), spanning extreme South Central Utah and North Central Arizona, just south of US 89 halfway between Kanab, Utah and Page, Arizona. It is divided into two areas: Coyote Buttes North and Coyote Buttes South. Visiting either of the Coyote Buttes areas requires purchasing a hiking permit in advance. Only 20 people per day are allowed to hike in.
One of the highlights of Coyote Buttes North Area is the rock formation known as The Wave, a swirling sandstone formation.
The Wave and Buckskin Gulch share the Wire Pass Trailhead on House Rock Valley Road.

The alley where I spent 2 months photographing a family of black redstarts was used for smoking cigarettes (and other substances) by many local workers and passers-by including street people. I regularly cleared hundreds of cigarette butts off the street before photo sessions. Oddly, cigarette butts would appear when I knew no one had been down the alley... It quickly became apparent that folk were tossing their cigarette butts out of the high rise windows and it is probably one thrown from a window that appears in this image. The scene here reminded me a little of an off-shoot poster for the 1984 film 'Paris, Texas' starring the wonderful actor Harry Dean Stanton and the equally talented actress Natassja Kinski. Paris, Texas rates in my top three films often occupying the top spot, depending on how I feel at the time. Many will not know the film, but many will recognise the slow-burning slide guitar music in the film by Ry Cooder which has now been ubiquitously used or copied and is so synonymous with arid and hostile desert scenes.
If you watch the youtube video you will see immediately how I'm reminded of the film and of course, you will hear the iconic music.

Sadly I'm not clever enough to invent a title that might include a 'Paris, Texas' reference so I made a title with an environmental comment/question which is perhaps more valid and relevant.

As we drove along the Colorado River, this is your view to the east away from the River. What a fantastic drive. I felt the B&W does better justice to these than the color images. They are red rocks.

Butt Ice ,,,as the water cools to freezing, these wondrous ice crystals grow down from the top layer of ice. Try it! It works best when the ice is fairly thin.
This is the butt of a Tufted Titmouse and the beak of a Pine Warbler. Not a sharp shot and taken with my Panasonic. I was glad to get the 2 birds at once. Finally able to get back onto Flickr after all things Covid related. Wishing everyone a healthy 2021.

This was the first or second 4x5 I took after meeting up with Vania (@surfmartian - IG) at Pawnee Buttes this past summer. I had shot the place before, but wanted some different views.
Last time, I had tramped by this location, but didn't explore it, and definitely didn't shoot it - then, my goal was the buttes themselves. This time, I just wanted to capture them in the frame.
This would have been the first time that I collaborated with her in person to frame a shot. I can't remember which one of us did what, to be honest.
One of us picked the general area. I remember wanting the rock to establish the lower left of the picture, but I can't remember if it was my idea or hers.
The lens was selected out of necessity (anything longer than a 90 wouldn't have worked), and I had already decided to use a yellow filter while shooting Foma Retropan.
But it was very much a collaborative effort. There was a lot of talking back and forth about the details and about metering.
If it had just been me alone, this photo would either not exist or would be different.
I think it's a good thing to do this sometimes. Grab a photography friend and explore a location - maybe even one you've already shot. It will deliver to you a very different experience than before.
