Eastbound oil cans pass over the Colorado River, coming into the small community of Burns, Colorado on their way towards a crew change at Bond.

Public leaven burning before Passover in Israel

[Inspired by Role Play for my character, Emily Rose. In Character promotional use for an Indie Horror film she played a part in.]

On a disgustingly humid Sunday, the sun breaks away from the clouds just in time to shine on two South Shore Freights meeting on the west end of their Bailly Yard in Burns Harbor, Indiana.

On the left, a “Nice Guy” in the seat pauses for a couple frames before shoving into Bailly for the rest of their train for a total of 35 cars with CSS 2002 (GP38-2) and FURX 4226 (GP40-2). The job is AF12, the recently reinstated transfer to CSX East Chicago Pegasus Yard, at the time of the photo, the job has been online for a full week for the first time since 2017.

On the right, a trio of traction orange GP38-2s (2009/2007/2001) on train PF10 pull up to the signal on Main 2 at the west end of Bailly after completing their customer work on the east side of Michigan City, now waiting for AF12 to take off west so they can shove into Bailly.

This was my first time out towards the east end of the railroad since the NICTD Double Track Project has been completed and it was great to be back in action chasing friends on the CSS again. So much has been and will be changed in the past two years, granted it was a Sunday, holding freights on the main for long periods of time wasn’t nearly as possible or easy before due to the “silver sausage” commuter traffic. NICTD Dispatchers are still learning how to route trains around on the double track but it’s nice having everything completed, as well as daylight freights, now just added anxiety with track speed being 40MPH from Michigan City to Chicago and trying chase in the concrete jungle that NWI is turning into!

Here’s another shot from the archives, back when there was no wind, flying fence panels and broken pots…

Thanks very much for viewing :-)

A small burn flowing through a depression in the grassy hillside - surrounded by heather and rocky boulders (garnet semi-pelite).

The sky was probably even more extreme in reality - I often take a badly underexposed photo first, but this reflects the mood of the sky as it was in reality - that's what I used as a guide when I assigned the colors to the sky.

Day 3146 Y9D224

I gladly stepped into your flames believing you would keep me safe, but you disregarded me and laughed as I burned.

Sedling Burn flows into The River Wear at Cowshill in Weardale. This waterfall (about 4 metres high) is only about 50 metres upstream of the confluence.

Hebgen Lake, Montana. Following the snowmobile trails along the Madison Arm, I praised the heavy, bulky suit while cursing the cold that stung whatever small areas of my face that were exposed and made my eyes water even under the face mask. By the time I reached here the temperatures had already climbed to somewhere above zero. I have been gliding through a standing burn, the tall skeletal remains of lodgepole pines that have not yet keeled over. New growth barely peeks above the snow. The mist that rises off the water and hangs between the end of the cindered forest and the distant peaks coats everything in hoarfrost, even the snow. The burn of fire, the burn of cold. In the charred trees I see a will to stand, upright while the elements try to wear them down. If passion is fire, what is ice? I was burned by passion, and somehow came out standing. Burned again, the cold sinks in like despair. I don't know if I stand for a reason, or if I'm just too dumb to fall.

There was an abandoned house here until recently. It was burned down, and you can still see the blackened remains under the trees. Three or four small barns were also removed from the property.

Blackhope Burn

One more image from the weekend wander into the Moffat Hills, following the Blackhope Burn that runs the full length of the Glen. Some gorgeous light and shadows combined with snow clinging to the tops of the hills.

Stepping back in time to 2014 with this moody image from the top of Mt Burns, New Zealand. This is a wonderfull short but steep hike well off the tourist radar. I did the hike two days in a row and on the following day was greeted with snow fall up half way up. I remember fighting the rain and the mist on the lens on this day.

Part of my pasture had a controlled burn, the grass is coming in nicely. I had read that Mushrooms like burned areas (wooded areas specifically). I noticed we had a lot of Bonnets coming up and this is one of them. It opens Large

One of the last shots I took as I struggled to find a good composition as the light faded. Had to boost the exposure in post processing.

[Explored 8 April 2023]

My brother and I went back from lancelin last October, and we took this sunset at Burns Beach.

Still get more photos need to be processed, I will start to upload those after Spring festival.

Again, thanks all for your browsing and comments.

Musk Lorikeet

Glossopsitta concinna

Bird Overview: The Musk Lorikeet specialises in feeding on the nectar which is produced by flowering eucalypts, and sometimes also from the flowers of banksias and grevilleas. They collect nectar with their brush-shaped tongues. Musk Lorikeets are usually seen feeding in large noisy flocks in the canopy of eucalypts, often associating with other nectar-feeding birds, especially Rainbow Lorikeets and honeyeaters. The movements of Musk Lorikeets are often correlated with the flowering of trees, with birds appearing when the trees are in bloom, and leaving after the flowering has finished.

Identification: The Musk Lorikeet is a medium-sized, sturdy lorikeet, sometimes seen in large flocks when trees are flowering and often in mixed flocks with other parrots and other birds. They are active and noisy. This lorikeet is mostly green, with a yellow patch at the side of the breast. It has a bright red forehead and band through the eye to the ear coverts. The crown is blue, with females having less blue than males. In flight, brown flight feathers and the golden tail are revealed. Flight is fast and direct, with short angular wings and a medium-length, pointed to wedge-shaped tail.

Songs and Calls: The usual contact call is a shrill metallic screech, higher than the Rainbow Lorikeet, in flight and when perched. They constantly chatter when feeding.

Habitat: Musk Lorikeets are found in tall, open, dry forest and woodlands, dominated by eucalypts and are usually found in the canopy. They are also seen in suburban areas, parks and street trees. They roost or loaf in tall trees away from their feeding sites.

Behaviour: Musk Lorikeets are gregarious, often mixing with other parrots when feeding, including Scaly-breasted Lorikeets, Little Lorikeets and Swift Parrots.

Feeding: Musk Lorikeets feed in all levels of the canopy and are very active when foraging. They eat mainly pollen and nectar from eucalypts using their specialised brush-tipped tongues, but also eat seeds, fruits and insects and their larvae.

Breeding: Musk Lorikeets breed in hollow branches and holes in living eucalypts, often near watercourses. The entrance holes are usually very small, so they have to squeeze in. Eggs are laid on a base of chewed or decayed wood. The female incubate the eggs and both parents roost in the hollow at night.

Shot just a little while after Tuscan Burn (previosly posted image) this one captures the sun more enclosed by the storm clouds, which I have emphasised by slightly desaturating the perimiter of the image.

The journey back from Siena to Castellina in Chianti took us past some awesome viewpoints, many too tricky to be able to park up and capture, but one point was available and we reached it as the weather started closing in and the sun was getting low.

This shot is the result of a very short and very heavy heavy thunder and rain storm that coincided with some strong low warm sunlight.

I happened to turn away from the usual vista that few other happy snappers were enjoying of the local town (I forget the name of it now) and managed to see the last bit of Tuscan sun as it succumbed to the heavy clouds.

With a 0.8 sec exposure, a swish of the arm through three in camera multiple exosphere and little bit of enhancement to the white balance and saturation in post, I think this sums up that moment quite well.

Carrifran Burn

It was back to the Moffat Hills again today and a wander along the length of Carrifran Burn. This wee wander was mainly as a little bit of an explore and looking at the possibility of making a hike up around Carrifran Gans and neighbouring Hills, including the highest in Galloway, White Coomb.

I found this tree on the edge of the burn which gives a good view of Raven Craig bathed in light.
