When Spring is in the air Holland's countryside turns into a kaleidoscope of colours. From mid-March to mid-May are the best times to go and see the flower parks and the colourful bulb fields.

I lingered here for a couple of photographs. Quite a good vantage point for viewing the ship... but of course, I was eager to embark and see her from within!

... rather nice too, after my supper in Marco's lido restaurant. I was loathe to leave the views and enjoyed a cold spell on deck. Meanwhile, tthe Waldorf Restaurant served dinner behind closed curtains, and my table was in any case full... but that is another story!

Our first destination. Sadly, closed, as it was Queens' Day. But we had a good look at the exterior anyway, and managed to take a moment inside the café too.

... for a few minutes. On the large version of this photo, the dent in the dock can be seen! But was it really Marco Polo, and was it really then?

... reading my book on my spare bed, and looking very relaxed!

I only once saw my cabin stewardess, Maia, and did not get the chance to thank her. It was such an amusing sight!

The TV, I never even switched on. The wardrobe was a decent size and would have done for a longer cruise.

For Ron and his Italian colleague. Lots of tulips!

Each deck had a different carpet colour. This was the alleyway outside my cabin, 643.

Dutch bulbfields

Originally, the flower bulb area in South Holland, near Lisse and Hillegom. That is still called De Bollenstreek. But the current bulb region is really in the Kop van Noord-Holland! The bulb growers who wanted to expand attracted massively to De Noordkop. There was room and sufficient land to expand. It is now one large bulb field on the coast from Petten to Den Helder. Photographers like to come to the Kop van Noord-Holland to film and photograph the flowering bulb fields. The horizon is still beautiful here. No apartment buildings, no urban development, no highways, but a beautiful row of dunes, the old Dutch windmills and the typical North Holland farmhouse farms are the background of the tulip fields.

Not open that day, it being Queens' Day. The café staff were in attendance though, serving drinks on the square. They allowed us to catch this quick glance of the café. The main hall of the building was in darkness, but very imposing to see.

I do enjoy this fine station in its modern look!

... before I retired to my cabin to pack and sleep for a while -- it was the last night on board.

If I can make out the name on the ship in the background, she is the Ottawa Express.

There is a small section of deck here with imitation plastic deck planking (foreground) in a kind of lino style, followed further back (bottom left in this picture) by a narrow walk along the davits, where the deck is painted blue.

The rest of the decks are laid with proper teak planks.

This is when we are said to have hit the wooden dock wall sufficiently to have damaged it visibly. Marco Polo only had a few square inches of scraped paint to show!
