I'm probably one of the few people aboard a jetliner who enjoys seeing, let along photographing, the cloud formations outside the window at 30,000 plus feet. This building off the left wing of a USAirways Airbus 320 is somewhere over Ohio. The flight was going from Columbus to Phoenix.

This canyon wall along side Snake River reveals a multitude of layers. And these are just the ones we can see. Undoubtedly there are many more hidden by the buildup of crumbled rock at the base of the cliff. Makes me wonder what was going on during these events and how long it took them to form. One hazy November day a few years ago, I traveled aound Agra Vrindavan Fatehpur Sikri and Bharatpur.

It was one of the worst periods of dust buildup in the air that I have seen for a long long time. The sun was not visible bar a red object even at noon time.

The notion that horseshoes bring luck has long been romanticized. Originating from various cultures, including the famous tales surrounding Fatehpur Sikri and other historical sites, the belief that hanging a horseshoe can influence one's fortune is deeply ingrained. However, one must question: does luck truly stem from an inanimate object?

In places like Fatehpur Sikri, where history and myth intertwine, the horseshoe has become a symbol of hope for many seeking prosperity or protection. Yet, this reliance on a mere artifact raises concerns about our understanding of fate and success. Are we attributing our achievements to external symbols rather than recognizing our own efforts and capabilities?

While it’s charming to think that placing a horseshoe above your door might ward off bad luck or attract good fortune, it's crucial to acknowledge that true luck often comes from hard work, perseverance, and seizing opportunities—not just from hanging an old piece of metal. In essence, while the tradition may hold sentimental value in various cultures—including those around Fatehpur Sikri—it’s vital to approach such beliefs with a critical eye rather than blind faith in their supposed powers.

Fatehpur Sikri is a grand concept in designing a city that would never succeed as history shows that without a large water source nearby, all humanity must perish.

The historical city was constructed by Mughal emperor Akbar beginning in 1570 and served as the empire's capital from 1571 to 1585. What you see today are these grandiose structures in barren countryside populated by people whom history has forgotten.

The old wooden doorway almost 7-10 feet high are adorned with horse shoes and I guess it is to do with the upliftment of your luck.

Snowpacolypse has arrived but it has not curbed the dogs desires for a bit of outside playtime so we all ventured out into todays blizzard for some exercise. I really wanted to get a few outside playtime shots in the snow but when my eyelashes froze and I could no longer see through the icy buildup, I gave up and called in the wild ones. We spent a few minutes in the garage posing for the camera and shaking our floppy ears around before heading into the house for dinner by the fireplace. We may give it another try tomorrow as it looks like this giant storm is going to be around for another day. I love winter :-)

Darwin's floodplains, waiting for rain.... This was the first storm of this season, really. It made it all the way to town!

Not the best bolt in the world, I spent 3 hours running around in circles and getting lost in the rural area (d'oh). Then after another half an hour trying to set my tripod up inside my car (and still getting spots all over my lens from my open window.... grr), the storm had moved quite a distance away from me. Still, I managed to get out of the car when it dried up and got a few little bolts. I need to get my storm swing back on again - I shoulda trusted my first instinct on choosing a location!

Exciting news for me too over the last couple of days - my 2014 calendars, and my first coffee table book are now in stock! :)

During the buildup of the Grande Marina in the 1890's, a new school of thought emerged that the navy could save money while increasing its punching power by switching its policies of combat from big, expensive battleship, to torpedo boats. This "cowardly", "underhanded" and "cheap" point of view was not looked upon kindly by the navy brass, who really liked their battleships, and despised the development of torpedoes. Even though the Young School grew and grew, gaining the support of both the Treasury and the Consulate, the Admiralty opposed torpedoes at every turn, but would eventually submit and allow the upstarts to develop their assassin boats. The issue came to a head, again, when it was proposed to produce what other navies were starting to call a "torpedo boat tender". The navy brass, who had only grudgingly permitted the construction of coastal-water torpedo forces, were insulted by the Young School's attempt to infest the traditional realm of the cruiser and battleship with their ideas. The proposal was thrown out, but made an enemy of one of the most influential men in the navy. Victor Amancio was the youngest man ever promoted to the position of admiral; he was a rising star, a brilliant commander and the de facto leader of the Young School of Thought. His vociferous arguments kept the proposal alive, and gained the support of the Navy's most dreaded enemy; the Army of Perceptum. The Admiralty was shocked when the army offered funds to develop the concept, and attempted to squash this insurrection but to no avail. Once the first ship was launched and became fully operational, the navy brass caved and agreed to fund the construction of her sisters.

The Sinfonia was the Grande Marina's first torpedo boat tender. The original plan of the Young School was to use a repurposed cruiser hull with which to carry ten torpedo boats into battle. The Navy's refusal put an end to that, but with support from the Army they developed a Plan B. Sinfonia began life as a Merchantman, somewhat larger than the average Perceptan cargo ship. Her conversion and arming had been cheap and simple; when complete she could operate six torpedo boats with the all the supplies necessary to maintain and repair them for extended periods of time. When the Navy caved and awarded her with an Aquila (the eagle figurehead all Perceptan warships bear) she was armed with two 3.5in guns to afford her at least a modicum of self-defense. She was an important first step, even if she would soon be replaced by a larger purpose-built class of warship.

The aftermath of most Holidays is always a letdown to me...I guess it may be to lots of other folks too. There's all of the buildup and anticipation of the event; the all too brief time of enjoyment; then the cleanup and it's back to the routine. Kind of depressing sometimes even if the routine one returns to is a palatable one.

So this rose seen in last night's twilight's last gleaming kind of summed it up for me...a faded rose -- faded light -- a faded holiday.

And the world spins on.

While not technically great this shot nonetheless speaks to me. Shot at ISO 3200 (yeah-uh!) the grain (okay, noise...I'm an old film user and I still want to say ASA sometimes instead of ISO) is acceptable for the shot.
