Intense rainbow appearing in a downpour above the Alpine village of St. Oswald, East Tyrol, Austria.

I was driving back to my hotel from a bike ride to the Tre Cime and was observing a buildup of some impressive storm clouds. At one point brightly-lit village of St. Oswald caught my eye high up on a mountainside. I immediately started looking for a place to stop my car and catch a few snapshots, but it was not an easy task on a busy road. Some moments later an impressively bright rainbow appeared right next to the village and by pure luck I saw a completely empty supermarket car park where I could stop and snap a few shots before the colours faded away.

Long Island Rail Road alcohol train ALQ1 is seen heading east along the Main Line, approaching Woodside Station on track 1. The train consists of MP15AC locomotives 171 and 168 bookending converted M3 car E901, which has been modified to apply an alcohol solution to the third rail, preventing ice buildup that can cause electrical arcing.

Cumulonimbus clouds were building up all along the Canterbury mountains and foothills. This anvil cloud (cumulonimbus incus) was North west of Christchurch International Airport.

Holywell (Cornish: Tregew) is a coastal village in north Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is at Holywell Bay (Cornish: Porth Heylyn), about three miles (5 km) west-southwest of Newquay.

Holywell beach adjoins the settlement to the northwest and Penhale Camp, an army training establishment regularly used by cadets, is half-a-mile to the southwest. On the north side of Holywell beach Holywell Cave is accessible at low tide and contains many pools formed by natural buildup of minerals. In the cave is St Cubert's holy well.

Joe's weekly spa day, nails, ears, weight, and overall check, instantly turned into a UFC match today!

Joe gets the "Zoomies", like many dogs do. I believe it's a buildup of positive energy, happy chemicals, and hormones. They get to an uncontrollable level and need to be released or release themselves. The first couple times, after I just rescued him, I honestly thought he was possessed. We were playing on the floor, and he started coming at me like he was bat shit crazy! Now it's pretty easy to spot the onset and get him safely outside into the yard where he runs so fast it's funny. His back feet are in front of him, and his front feet are behind him. His eyes get wild and he's completely uncontrollable.

He's always pretty excited and enthusiastic when I get everything ready. The second he started flying towards me today I knew...for whatever reason, I decided it's been a while since I physically controlled, restrained, and dominated him without either of us getting injured. Not an easy task when there's arms, legs, hands, and feet flailing wildly around with a wide-open mouth of teeth in the mix. I think we both needed the physical exertion as well as the interaction. An hour later, we're both winded, bruised, and drained. And we still need to trim his nails...

Seen on April 10th, 2017 in Freilassing-Hofham. The Untersberg in the background.

The Boom Island Park lighthouse on the Mississippi River with downtown Minneapolis skyline in the background

More than you probably want to know:

Boom Island has not been a real island since the early 1900's; the buildup of river crud and sawdust from the lumber yards on the tiny 5 block island eventually filled in the waterway and connected it to the east bank of the Mississippi. It’s now a 14 acre riverfront park with some nice views of the downtown Minneapolis.

The name ‘Boom Island’ came from its lumber days, when long beams called ‘booms’ were used to collect logs floated down the river for the sawmills headquartered on the island.

The lighthouse is no longer functional but it's been renovated as a historical monument. It’s one of only a handful of lighthouses still on the Mississippi.

More than 75% of the world's geysers, including the world's largest are found at Yellowstone. A geyser is a hot spring which erupts periodically. These eruptions are caused by the buildup of hot water and steam trapped by constrictions in the "plumbing system" of a hot spring.

This one is at Dragon’s Mouth located to the left of the boardwalk from Mud Volcano.

Today, lots of convective buildups before noon. Might be an interesting afternoon.

Spring snowstorm pelts this Wild Horse as it makes its way in the time to cover. Notice the snow buildup on the back of this sorrel colored horse.

These clouds would eventually create a cirrus overcast as the anvil spread. Looking west, popcorn storms would move slowly north. A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 10PM. I might be able to get some night lightning if things workout.

I finally sat down at my work table and started to build a gas station/variety store based on the one my Grandparents had back in the very early 60s. I was surprised to find the building still exists with no alterations to it since it was built in the late 1920s.

This model will have a canopy that will cover the two gas pumps.

For what it's worth, this particular model

is the exact basic structure that the Vacation Home:

and WLGN TV Station:

www.flickr.com/photos/24796741@N05/19222951780/in/datepos...

models were made from.

I wanted to illustrate the fact that a good model building could be created without

too much work. By adding various details and surface materials, completely different

looks could be achieved easily.

On a different note...

A gentle reminder the new Elgin Park book is still available from the publisher.

I have seen Swainson's Hawks feed feathers to their young and was excited to see this behavior in the Eared Grebe also.

"The purpose(s) of feather eating is unproven but evidence suggests that the behavior has these benefits for the birds.

1. Some of the ingested feathers form a plug in the pylorus, between the stomach and small intestine, which acts as a strainer to keep fish bones in the stomach long enough to be completely digested.

2. Most swallowed feathers end up in the stomach lumen, mixed with food. They eventually (along with any indigestible matter) form pellets that are ejected through the mouth. The continuous passage of these pellets through the upper digestive system minimizes the buildup of a variety of parasites that are very common there and plague grebes."

after a week of crappy weather, finally a nice change of pace

Sand buildup on Porthmeor Beach, St. Ives, Cornwall after storm Ciara.

There is a 1952 photograph in existence which shows the buildup of the sand reached the eaves of the roofs of the beach front properties - after storms and no action to move the sand.

Each year a bulldozer or digger is used to push the sand towards the sea and level the beach.

This partly for the holiday season, but mainly to protect the properties from flooding.

I searched for the 1952 image and came across this page:-

This weekend, I added my photographs to the millions taken of Niagara Falls. The buildup of winter ice is fascinating. This is a detail of the American Falls as viewed from the Canadian side.

Ice buildup at the mouth of Woods Creek from the Niagara River.

I watched this storm go from a puffy little cloud to a monster tower with a huge anvil top at it's front, dumping 1-1/4" sized hail and shooting lightning across the landscape. From genesis to monster it only took an hour.

This was the midpoint where it was getting bigger, but hadn't finished growing yet… in fact this was the last image I could take of this giant with the 11mm lens I had on me.

I found the scene before me to be quite nice and pastural like, with the storm light adding a sunset hue to the horizon to contrast the blue sky.

The last few days have been spent dealing with the polar vortex. Besides the frigid subzero temperatures, Sheboygan, Wisconsin has also had an amazing shelf ice buildup along its Lake Michigan shoreline. The result has created an otherworldly landscape that have drawn photographers to capture this temporary condition. Some have practiced extreme photography, scaling these ice configurations for that perfect shot, but also putting themselves and first responders in potential life-threatening danger. I have to admit that years in the past I did so myself.

The middle of the three posts today is a drawing that illustrates why shelf ice exploration is dangerous. A friend originally posted it and asked others to share it as a preventative measure. I am doing this and hope that it is helpful.

Cabooses are very lightweight and don’t do well on clearing ice from flange ways… Therefore, Condcuctor Nick Battelo has to physically clear the ice buildup from the flange way in the crossing in the Durango yard before he shoves his caboose back onto the train for the night
