They are the world’s tallest mammals. They are uniquely adapted to reach vegetation inaccessible to other herbivores. Unusually elastic blood vessels and uniquely adapted valves help offset the sudden buildup of blood (to prevent fainting) when giraffes’ heads are raised, lowered, or swung quickly. Their "horns" are actually knobs covered with skin and hair above the eyes that protect the head from injury. Their necks contain the same amount of vertebrae as we do (seven) except their bones are extremely elongated making their neck a long length of 2.4 meters. Ref: African Wildlife Foundation.

Calcium buildup along some of the columns. I thought it was interesting and I definitely know I'm going to steal this shot many times for use as a texture.

I am gradually releasing these photos until the end of May. There are about 26 total.

This Thursday afternoon was cold but sunny, so I decided to visit Sheboygan's lakefront. Recent winds and frigid temperatures created interesting patterns on the shore. Photos in this trio were taken near the lighthouse or the water near it.

This icy formation juts out many yards from the actual shore. (Lake Michigan is large and deep, never totally freezing over. Ice buildup can, however, build up a significant distance from the shore in frigid weather.)

It's much too early for ice buildup along the western shore of Lake Michigan!!!

I almost made it down to the bottom of the falls that day, but there was quite an ice buildup on the trail. After I fell once, I decided to cut my losses, and head up to the top to take this picture.

Sand buildup on Porthmeor Beach, St. Ives, Cornwall after storm Ciara.

There is a 1952 photograph in existence which shows the buildup of the sand reached the eaves of the roofs of the beach front properties - after storms and no action to move the sand.

Each year a bulldozer or digger is used to push the sand towards the sea and level the beach.

This partly for the holiday season, but mainly to protect the properties from flooding.

I searched for the 1952 image and came across this page:-

Monsoon storm clouds during the "build-up" in Darwin, NT.... the tiny white sailboat in the distance makes this image for me.

Both the American and Canadian Falls are barely visible due to the largest ice buildup that I've ever seen!

The shadows are created from the various hotels beside this natural wonder.

A lot of the tourists voiced disappointment not to see the Falls, therein lies the title ;-)

I have seen Swainson's Hawks feed feathers to their young and was excited to see this behavior in the Eared Grebe also.

"The purpose(s) of feather eating is unproven but evidence suggests that the behavior has these benefits for the birds.

1. Some of the ingested feathers form a plug in the pylorus, between the stomach and small intestine, which acts as a strainer to keep fish bones in the stomach long enough to be completely digested.

2. Most swallowed feathers end up in the stomach lumen, mixed with food. They eventually (along with any indigestible matter) form pellets that are ejected through the mouth. The continuous passage of these pellets through the upper digestive system minimizes the buildup of a variety of parasites that are very common there and plague grebes."

Many thanks for your visit and comments. They are very much appreciated.

The precipitable water in the atmosphere was 1.89" (record high for this date 9/21). The dew point was ~70F. These conditions are extreme even during the height of the monsoon season over southeast Arizona. Severe storms and flooding are expected here by nightfall.

These Dutchman's Breeches were found blooming in various places in the southern Appalachians in mid-April. I always thought these flowers looked like pulled molar teeth (maybe with a bit of plaque buildup).

This time of year in Maine is called the dead of Winter as the 4 weeks from the 10th of January and on til mid February. Well, today registered a brisk 39 degrees and with considerable snow melt, presented the opportunity to climb atop one of the most photogenic spots in Maine. CMQs job #1 with 9023, (CITX) 3082 and 9021 haul 31x30 through Onawa during the late morning of January 21st. The warmer weather curbed safety concerns getting up to this location, as there was minimal ice buildup on the ledge itself. The climb however still had several large icicles, worthy of their own picture no doubt for another type of photographer.

nice to see the same views in "reverse light" for a change!!

Stopped by a snow-packed switch and a private crossing full of ice buildup leading to Desgagné Logistik warehouse in Valleyfield wharf, the crew of L536 had to combine switch broom, ice pick and brute force in order to delivering the day's need for track V086.

The lead giving access to Desgagné and McAsphalt was built in opposite way of the wharf's other customers so runaround the cars was the only way to access them in the proper way and that's why L536 assigned power set have cars on both side.

The two tall chimney in background belong to the huge Noranda's CEZ plant, the main reason for L536 existence.

Taken at dusk. The waves pounding the Meaford Ontario shoreline. If this is a prelude to what is coming this winter then the ice buildup on the Meaford shoreline will be amazing again this winter.

First of many days of convective activity this season. Severe storms, dominated well to my north and east.

North Point in Sheboygan, Wisconsin on the official first day of winter. The shoreline of Lake Michigan has the start of an interesting buildup of icicle-edged ice formations. For sure there'll be more to come as the winter progresses.

Every now and then, bays and harbors need to be dredged to remove silt buildup that makes the passage too shallow for larger ships. Paddling under the giant snorkel-that-sucks-up-sand near this one in Richmond, discovered that the last welder had left their signature graffiti in welder's bead. I was a bit disoriented while under it, but later flipped it and realized it was a figure in sombrero, puffing a ciggie.

This short time lapse shows progressive buildups over a 20 minute period. The one that starts at the end turned into a severe thunderstorm. However, I ended my recording session early because I needed to run an errand. When I returned 20minutes later, this was greeting me: www.flickr.com/photos/cloud_spirit/53048534801/in/photost...

Picture of the Day

The ice buildup at Niagara Falls is quite impressive. This was at the so-called 'American Falls' which are located entirely on the USA side of the Niagara River. From largest to smallest, the three waterfalls are the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls. The best views of the Falls are from the Canadian side and no matter the time of year or the weather, there are always many tourists from around the world enjoying the spectacle of so much water falling!

Note for Crazy Tuesday.

I have had to use an old pic (from a few weeks ago) as we have had here 10+ days of low cloud, mist, drizzle and rain with only 12 minutes of sunshine (recorded the other side of the city) in that ten day period. The only photo opportunity of a cloud in the previous week would be a grey featureless box!

New painting, old idea.

A very thick buildup of paint on this one. Just received from show featuring painting and sculpture at Concord Art. New show is practically everything else goes. At the time of this writing selections have not been made. Update tomorrow.

Here one can take in the wonderous view of Opal Pool, a beautiful green-blue pool set in a massive area of travertine buildup.

*Thermal water rises through the limestone, carrying high amounts of the dissolved limestone (calcium carbonate). At the surface, carbon dioxide is released, and calcium carbonate is deposited, forming travertine, the chalky white mineral forming the rock of travertine terraces.

For years we here in Southern California endured some really severe drought. Little did I know that years of drought can have at least one benefit, and that is the buildup of wildflower seeds. Through the drought years there have always been wildflower blooms, but just not intense ones. I’ve read that during those years the seeds build up in the soil as the plants choose not to germinate, biding their time for better conditions. Often when we get any bout of serious winter rain everyone starts getting excited assuming that even just one storm will produce a super bloom or even a good one, but that is not the case. Consistent rain throughout the winter months, month by month, is what is required to get truly exceptional blooms. Finally after years of drought those conditions line up and all those dormant seeds germinate at once. For parts of SoCal in 2016, 2017, and now 2019 we have experienced just that. And this year’s bloom of poppies in the Walker Canyon area by Lake Elsinore is the biggest superbloom ever there according to a ranger I talked to. The poppies are absolutely spectacular! A few other flowers are sprinkled around here or there, but the state flower of California reigns absolutely supreme. The crowds are pretty huge (fueled by all media, traditional and social), but I wandered for six miles through the land and was able to walk away with plenty of people-free natural landscapes like this one.

This is Red Beach on Bribie Island, Queensland.

Utah Lake gets a lot of ice buildup during the coldest of the winter months. The ice freezes and the wind then pushes it up into piles at certain areas of the lake.

This was a bit of a close up of some of the ice. I didn't quite realize it at the time, but it make sit look like a bit of a barren, frozen wasteland with nothing but ice in the foreground and snowy mountains in the background.

Storm buildup but it quickly disappeared as it appeared.

Intense rainbow appearing in a downpour above the Alpine village of St. Oswald, East Tyrol, Austria.

I was driving back to my hotel from a bike ride to the Tre Cime and was observing a buildup of some impressive storm clouds. At one point brightly-lit village of St. Oswald caught my eye high up on a mountainside. I immediately started looking for a place to stop my car and catch a few snapshots, but it was not an easy task on a busy road. Some moments later an impressively bright rainbow appeared right next to the village and by pure luck I saw a completely empty supermarket car park where I could stop and snap a few shots before the colours faded away.
