Discovered by Gold Road Resources, the Gruyere Gold deposits in South Dorothy Hills, Western Australia, are among the largest undeveloped gold deposits in Australia. Gold Road is developing the resource in joint venture with Gold Fields Ltd., and awarded Amec Foster Wheeler the EPC contract with construction partner Civmec. The AUD 500 million project includes a large-scale open pit mine feeding a 7.5 million ton per year processing plant.

Amec Foster Wheeler deployed Bentley applications as part of an integrated engineering solution founded on centralized data with change control. The solution produces data-rich 3D design models for automatic drawing production, shop detailing, fabrication, construction simulation, progress tracking, and eventual asset management. This solution eliminates the need for 2D deliverables, reducing design costs by 25 percent and shop detailing costs by 20 percent.

The Highways Department, Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, is building a 50-kilometer bridge linking Hong Kong, Zhuhai, and Macao. Crossing a series of bridges and tunnels, vehicles will enter/leave Hong Kong through boundary crossing facilities on a 130-hectare reclaimed island. The Leighton-Chun Wo Joint Venture is responsible for construction of the USD 4.6 billion 40,000-square-meter passenger clearance building and associated works.

The team made Bentley's BIM technology the common platform to facilitate communications, and to anticipate and rectify construction problems. Solving clashes before construction saved about 12 percent of the construction budget. The survey team compared 3D design models to point cloud models to avoid discrepancies on-site, then continuously updated the design model to create accurate as-built models, saving 15 percent of the survey budget.

The Heihe-Blagoveshchensk Heilongjiang River (Amur River) Road Bridge connects Heihe City, China, to Blagoveshchensk City, Russia. The length of the entire route is 19.9 kilometers, with the cable-stayed bridge portion spanning 1,284 meters in length. Located in the alpine region, the project is subject to extreme temperature variations and strict environmental protection. To meet these challenges and accommodate a short construction schedule, the project team implemented a collaborative BIM approach for delivery of the infrastructure project.

The project team used Bentley’s BIM technology, reality modeling applications, and ProjectWise for collaborative design, modeling, construction management, and information sharing for optimal project coordination through construction. Accurate modeling with ProStructures reduced construction errors and rework, saving five working days and 30 tons of materials. Design and collaboration using OpenRoads and ProjectWise improved modeling efficiency by 35 percent, while ContextCapture helped facilitate asset and security management and optimize earthworks through digital terrain surveys. BentleyLumenRT provided life-like visualizations for improved project performance and communication with the government and public.

Tanami Expansion Project – (Tanami Desert, Northern Territory, Australia)

Image courtesy of Tetra Tech Proteus

Tetra Tech Proteus was lead designer for the detailed engineering phase of the AUD 65 million Tanami Expansion Project, a throughput upgrade for the Newmont-owned Tanami gold mine in the Northern Territory of Australia. The objective was to increase production of the 20-year-old processing plant from 2.3 to 2.6 million tons per year and improve safety by implementing a significantly safer method for producing the mine backfill material.

The project team used OpenPlant and AECOsim Building Designer to model all aspects of the as-built plant by quickly converting existing legacy 3D models in a variety of formats together with point-cloud information. OpenPlant PID enabled quick and easy generation of all P&IDs and provided an efficient means to retain and modify the intelligence attached to the P&IDs as design changes occurred. The team used OpenPlant Modeler for the piping and AECOsim Building Designer for the structure and concrete. Cached views enabled the automatic generation of annotated plans and elevations of the plant in five hours per drawing, rather than the average 40 hours per drawing, and generated piping isometric drawings in one hour rather than three. The team used ProjectWise to share information among project disciplines, and Bentley Navigator to identify potential operational and maintenance issues.

China Aerospace Construction Group Co., Ltd. - Inner Mongolia Ethnic Minorities Cultural Sports Center

The CNY 720 million Inner Mongolia Ethnic Minorities Cultural Sports Center in Hohhot, China, will establish the region as a world-class destination for cultural and sporting events. The facilities include a grand stand, racetrack, stables, performance hall, wrestling arena, sports museums, and parking plaza. China Aerospace Construction Group and Chongqing Liansheng Construction Project Management provided overall project management and integration of design and construction.

AECOsim Building Designer’s BIM advancements provided 3D project control, enabling multi-discipline design coordination, building optimization, pipeline coordination, and material quantity reduction, which reduced project costs. In one case, optimization reduced earthwork from 370,000 to 70,000 cubic meters, saving more than CNY 20 million. The building design software also reduced design time, errors, and rework rates. Conducting 4D construction simulations from the model helped to choose a rational construction scheme.

The CNY 435 million Macheng Caijiazhai Wind Farm Project in China's Hubei province is generating 49.5 of the planned 80 megawatt capacity for supplying power to Macheng City. As the general contractor, Hubei Electric Power Survey and Design Institute was responsible for designing and constructing the wind generating sets, pylons and bases, booster station and associated equipment.

Low mountain ridges and steep slopes posed a challenge for locating the wind generating sets, designing the booster station access road, and transporting large-scale equipment. The institute used Bentley technology to create a landform reality model to resolve locations and routes. Hybrid models combining the reality model and 3D design models of the project informed construction, saving more than CNY 200,000 and shortening the construction period by 20 days.

Museu do Amanhã. Rio de Janeiro. Sep/2016

The Museum of Tomorrow (Portuguese: Museu do Amanhã) is a science museum in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was designed by Spanish neofuturistic architect Santiago Calatrava, and built next to the waterfront at Pier Maua.

The main exhibition takes visitors through five main areas: Cosmos, Earth, Anthropocene, Tomorrow and Now via a number of experiments and experiences. The museum mixes science with an innovative design to focus on sustainable cities.

Funded by the Rio city government with support from sponsors, the building attempts to set new standards of sustainability in the municipality. Compared with conventional buildings, designers say it uses 40% less energy (including the 9% of its power it derives from the sun), and the cooling system taps deep water from nearby Guanabara Bay. The structure looks set to be one of Rio’s most famous tourist sights. Its solar spines and fan-like skylight have been designed so that the building can adapt to changing environmental conditions.[1]

The museum has partnerships with Brazil’s leading universities, global science institutions and collects real-time data on climate and population from space agencies and the United Nations. It has also hired consultants from a range of related fields, including astronauts, social scientists and climate experts. It sits waterside in a port area that was left abandoned for decades, and is now being renovated with new office blocks, apartments and restaurants.
