As the sun dips across the horizon, the Empire Builder #7 crosses the Gassman Bridge nearly 8 hours late. The polar vortex has played havoc to the railroad for another winter…I can’t wait for spring…BNSF 7983, 312, 310, 361
BNSF 8219 leads the Empire Builder down the Milwaukee Road-built Short Line at Merriam Park seen here crossing the bridge passing over I-94 and Fairview Avenue.
A builder at work in a Rome backstreet. I liked the way the sun was catching the wooden posts, it made them glow in almost a religious way.
For an account of a few interesting days in Rome:
X I am no mathematician or builder all I can say is this bridge looks wonderful. I have enclosed some information on the design that I do not fully understand myself but some of you will no doubt
The Mathematical Bridge is the popular name of a wooden footbridge in the southwest of central Cambridge, United Kingdom. It bridges the River Cam about one hundred feet northwest of Silver Street Bridge and connects two parts of Queens' College. Its official name is simply the Wooden Bridge. It is a Grade II listed building.
The bridge was designed by William Etheridge, and built by James Essex in 1749. It has been rebuilt on two occasions, in 1866 and in 1905, but has kept the same overall design. Although it appears to be an arch, it is composed entirely of straight timbers built to an unusually sophisticated engineering design, hence the name.
The arrangement of timbers is a series of tangents that describe the arc of the bridge, with radial members to tie the tangents together and triangulate the structure, making it rigid and self-supporting. This type of structure, technically tangent and radial trussing, is an efficient structural use of timber, and was also used for the timber supporting arches (centring) used for building stone bridges. Analysis of the design shows that the tangent members are almost entirely under compression, while the radial timbers are almost entirely subject to tension with very little bending stress, or to put it another way, the tangent and radial elements elegantly express the forces involved in arched construction.
THANKS FOR YOUR VISIT AND FOR TAKING THE TIME TO WRITE A COMMENT IT’S MUCH APPRECIATED.
The Empire Builder exits Saint Paul down an hour off the schedule. A pair of GE P42DCs make this train appear like an Empire Builder before the inception of the Siemens ALC-42s.
One of the newest Siemens ALC-42s leads the Empire Builder off the BNSF Midway Subdivision and onto Minnesota Commercial trackage at St. Anthony Junction.

A frame to highlight the Chicago Great Western Bridge in downtown Saint Paul. The Empire Builder has some BNSF assistance along with one of the fresher throwback painted locomotives to make for another wacky edition of the train.

It is a typical March afternoon in Oconomowoc, as I am riding along on the eastbound Milwaukee Road patrol. We are aboard GP38-2 353 with SD10 545 trailing by the former Milwaukee Road station, heading for Brownberry Ovens with airslide hoppers of flour. Amtrak's westbound Empire Builder is right on time and looking fine as they fly by the old depot.
This is a scan of one of those high quality 110 instamatic prints that I have so many of. I just bought a Kodak Slide and Scan Film Scanner for scanning those tiny 110 negatives, we'll see how it does.

The male Satin Bowerbird's major task in life is to construct and maintain his distinctive avenue bower. Made from carefully selected twigs and decorated with precious found objects, its purpose is to attract a mate.
....was here ..... unfortunately I haven't seen him. I'll have to come again. But then quietly and carefully ...psst
Custom Lego MOC of the Week! Lagertha and her son, Bjorn Ironside @myrdred_the_builder.
Amazing job by @myrdred_the_builder for bringing our custom lego accessories to whole new level with his painting skills! Job well done @myrdred_the_builder
A late running Empire Builder allowed us to get in position for this shot as No 8 approaches St Paul Union Depot, perhaps nicknamed SPUD? Not really sure but I did get a kick out of the initials.
The Empire Builder departs Saint Paul while fighting snow all the way through Minnesota. It's a healthy test for the trio of Siemens ALC-42s. Today's train is following the Borealis down the Mississippi River and over Wisconsin to Chicago. Late arriving equipment to Seattle several days prior ultimately delayed this edition of the Empire Builder, but it is hanging tough in the weather.
Amtrak locomotives 313 and 14 cruise along the Mississippi River at Dakota, Minnesota with the Empire Builder and a backwards consist that was turned around at the wye in Grand Forks. The result was a train late by around three hours which made certain sun angles more possible. I intercepted the Empire Builder at Minnieska near John Latsch State Park and grabbed an additional photo in Winona. While there, I noticed the clouds cleared the further down river one got, so it was off to Dakota. Certainly glad I made the effort. Two other parties of railfans also were on-site further up beyond the overlook. No doubt they got great photos too.
Amtrak's 2nd oldest P42DC (and oldest active one) is in reasonably good shape as it takes the point on the westbound Empire Builder.
The Empire Builder sits in Minot while the morning sun begins to cast it's warm glow on the frozen landscape.
With the train arriving into town 1hr early, it gave me ample time to wander farther from the train than normal during the servicing stop (and for that fuel truck to leave).

Excerpt from brucecounty.maps.arcgis.com/apps/Shortlist/index.html?app...:
689 Princes Street: This home was built in approximately 1875 by Abraham Joseph Evans (1839-1912) who was an architect and builder from Swansea, South Wales, who came to Bruce County in 1861. It is one of the most authentic, well-kept examples of the Second Empire style of architecture in the Municipality of Kincardine. The ornate exterior features decorated gables in the roof, a belvedere, bay window and front portico as well as rows of dentils which highlight all three stories, and the ornate iron cresting work on the top of the tower.

Toying around with some new bicycle storage ideas. Pulley's and Rope. We will post more once the idea is full proof.
Amtrak 28, the Empire Builder's Portland section, rolls east through the Columbia River Gorge near Stevenson, Washington. After thirty plus years of driving by this shot on SR-14, I finally decided to try this angle.
Next summer, I'm coming out here on June 21st.
A very (very) belated ABS Builder Challenge trophy for Isaiah. Yes, seven months late. :P This is for round 2.4 of the ABS Builder Challenge.
For the record though, I've had this built since October. I just never had time to take pictures. :P
Anyways, congratulations to Isaiah for winning the round, and thanks to the judges, I had a ton of fun competing.
