This little beauty was a regular at a local sports field adjoining the Dandenong Creek & a remnant patch of bushland not far from my work. I popped down for a session once lunchtime on a cloudy day.

This is more for my bird (lifer) documentation than image quality. It's simply too far.

A perched view of this beautiful shorebird!

This could easily be mistaken for a piece of Birch tree but it's a Buff-Tip moth. I love its camouflage!

555) Buff Banded Rail

Buff Banded Rail, Hypotaenidia philippensis

It takes me the whole afternoon driving around paddy field looking for this elusive rail. Near dark, when I am almost giving up, one rail showing its head. And I really mean, the head. But good enough for a lifer count.

Mostly blurry!!

But for some reason, to me, it still looks ok. A nice bird found in the mountains of Ecuador on my most recent tour. Thanks to my guests, and all the nice people we met during our travels. More tours to Ecuador coming this year!

A first for me. As I was following a Sacred Kingfisher, I wasn't expecting to see this Buff Banded Rail emerge from the scrub

Bentsen Rio Grande Valley State Park, Mission, Hidalgo County, Texas

Fairly common in humid tropical lowlands. Favors forest edges, plantations, and dense second growth. Usually seen singly or in pairs, foraging quietly in flowering or fruiting trees. Buff throat patch is bordered by black moustache stripes. Birds from western Panama north also show black chest band around buff throat.

This one was photographed in Costa Rica guided by Neotropic Photo Tours.

Handsome, medium-size hummingbird of humid tropical lowlands. Favors forest edge, second growth, gardens in some areas. Feeds low to high and often comes to feeders. Can be difficult to distinguish from Buff-bellied Hummingbird, which favors drier habitats. Rufous-tailed has a dingier, grayish belly and more extensive rusty on the tail, which lacks the distinct fork often shown by Buff-bellied’s tail. Also compare Cinnamon Hummingbird.

Most of my Costa Rican birds have been photographed at Tico Rainforest B&B. Here, the owner, Victor has documented over 200 different species on his small 2 hectare property.
