A final look at the Buff- Crested Bustard before we move on. The buff-crested bustard has three different courtship displays: an aerial display, in which the male will fly up in the air and perform a semi backward somersault, and two different posture displays. In the first posture display, the male will stand with his neck curved down and his head parallel to the floor while he utters a soft low-pitched clicking sound. He will usually do this when near a female. In the second posture display, the male will make a similar call as in the first display, but standing upright instead. He will gradually turn the low pitched screeches into high pitched screeches. These small-ish birds generally weigh less than a kilogram, and they usually top the scales at some 1.5 – 2 pounds (0.68 – 0.91 kilograms). (Al Ain, UAE, Dec. 2012)
The Buff-throated Saltator (Saltator maximus) is a seedeating bird. Traditionally placed in the cardinal family (Cardinalidae), it actually seems to be closer to the tanagers (Thraupidae).[2] It breeds from southeastern Mexico to western Ecuador and northeastern Brazil.
